If the gay bar fits, you must acquit…

Larry Craig has hired high profile attorney Billy Martin, also famed as defender of canine assassinator Michael Vick. Martin has produced a unique “gay bar” defense for Craig to enable him to reverse his guilty plea for his arrest in a Minneapolis airport self-loather cruising sting. Interviewed by CNN today, Martin explained the logic as follows:

“I think the senator had just gone under a tremendous interview with the Idaho Statesman [newspaper], where he was undergoing an investigation for being gay. They were walking around Washington and other cities with photographs in gay bars. They were embarrassing him. He had just gone to an interview where he had put to sleep… put to rest any argument that he was gay and they were going to publish this article. He stepped in that bathroom shortly after that interview and I know the pressure, the stress, as well as the panic from what this could do, did not have him thinking clearly and he waived his Constitutional rights, and we’re asking that that be reversed.”

So let me get this, uh, straight. According to his attorney:

  • Larry Craig has assured a nervous public that he is not gay and “doesn’t do those things”, but
  • Larry Craig has been photographed in gay bars in multiple cities, and
  • Stressed from the revelation of the photographs, Larry then visited the airport men’s room, and coincidentally was framed by a cop claiming Craig solicited sex from him, and
  • Craig, failing to “think clearly” for a two month period afterward, pleaded guilty.

Well, we can all thank god that he’s not gay. Stupid beyond belief, yes. Cowardly, yes. Panicky, yes. But definitely not gay. What a relief to self-respecting gay people everywhere.

Second Bin Laden Tape Expected

A second tape from Osama bin Laden was recorded in the same location as the video released last week. People in the intelligence community who have seen the tape feel it is directly related to the 9/11 anniversary since the al Qaeda leader introduces the prerecorded martyrdom video of one of the 9/11 hijackers, Waleed al Shehri. Waleed al Shehri was one of the hijackers on American Airlines flight 11 that crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

Sen Craig Files To Withdraw Guilty Plea

From The Roanoke Times:

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Sen. Larry Craig filed court papers Monday seeking to withdraw his guilty plea in an airport sex sting, arguing that he entered the plea under stress caused by media inquiries into his sexuality.

Craig, an Idaho Republican, pleaded guilty in August to disorderly conduct following his June arrest in a sting operation in a men’s bathroom at the Minneapolis airport. A police report alleged that Craig had solicited sex from a male officer at the airport, which the senator has denied.

Volunteers collect Baghdad’s nameless dead
via: CNN News

Sheik Jamal al-Sudani leads a group of volunteers with one of the most solemn tasks in Iraq: Collecting and burying the hundreds of unclaimed dead every month and giving them a proper burial.

“I only think about one thing: That one day, I will face the same fate as these people have faced, and will there be someone to take care of me and bury me, too?” the sheik told CNN. Continue reading

US Surge Has Failed – Iraqi Poll

Monday, 10 September 2007
via: BBC News

About 70% of Iraqis believe security has deteriorated in the area covered by the US military “surge” of the past six months, an opinion poll suggests.

The survey by the BBC, ABC News and NHK of more than 2,000 people across Iraq also suggests that nearly 60% see attacks on US-led forces as justified.

This rises to 93% among Sunni Muslims compared to 50% for Shia.

Why don’t the opinions of the Iraqi people factor into the decision making process? Will we hear these numbers in General Petraeus’s progress report?

Thompson Denies Ever Being Ill With His Cancer

From McClatchy:

LE MARS, Iowa — Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson said Friday that the lymphoma he was diagnosed with a few years ago is a chronic disease that could resurface, but that it’s treatable and should have no bearing on his longevity, candidacy or ability to lead the nation.

“I’ve never been ill from it a day in my life,” Thompson told a small group of reporters during a wide-ranging interview on his campaign bus from Sioux City to the farm town of Le Mars. “I wouldn’t be thinking about doing this at all if I had any questions about it.”

Doctors told him it was a form of cancer known as indolent lymphoma, which causes little pain and is relatively benign.

The Next Surge (Of Propaganda)

As the Iraqis Stand Down, We’ll Stand Up
By Frank Rich
The New York Times 9/7/07
via Truthout.org

When the line separating spin from reality is so effectively blurred, the White House’s propaganda mission has once more been accomplished. No wonder President Bush is cocky again. Stopping in Sydney for the economic summit after last weekend’s photo op in Iraq, he reportedly told Australia’s deputy prime minister that “we’re kicking ass.” This war has now gone on so long that perhaps he has forgotten the price our troops paid the last time he taunted our adversaries to bring it on, some four years and 3,500 American military fatalities ago.

Here we go again… Hopefully this time more questions will be asked and facts will be checked before the press and the public just buy what the White House is trying so hard to sell us. America is finally starting to wake up.
