The Guardian/UK, via Common Dreams:
Guess what? Abstinence only education doesn’t work. The teen pregnancy rate was up 3% in 2006, which resulted in about 435,000 babies born to girls between the ages of 15 and 19.
This was the first increase in teen pregnancy since 1991, when intense education programs were enacted to teach teens about birth control, use of condoms, sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS.
“The national policy of abstinence-only programmes just isn’t working,” Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood, said. “In the last decade more than $1bn has been wasted on abstinence-only programmes, when studies show they don’t reduce the number of teen pregnancies or sexually transmitted infections.”
Imagine that. Yet another idea by the Bush administration is FUBAR, and it costs billions of dollars to boot!!
Moms and Dads, even though we know YOUR child is the bestest, most precious and obedient child ever born, teenagers are sexual beings and need to have information. It’s not enough to have abstinence only taught in schools — so suck it up, read up on the subject, and then tell your child everything they need to know about birth control and safe sex. I don’t care how bright red your face goes. The cost of an uneducated roll in the hay is too high.
When you’re done, have a stiff drink, and write your Congressperson demanding an end to abstinence only education.

A six pack of beer is a dangerous and fertile thing in the hands of teens.

True.
That’s why they need to know how to protect themselves. They might just remember…and it’s certainly better to have information, rather than a pat on the head and “don’t do it” running through their brains.
