Friday News, Views, and Blues

Its another Friday morning and the weekend is almost here. The above photo is from Switzerland. It has no significance other than it’s a cool picture, and our EV lives in Switzerland!

First with the news:

A White House study has found that 473 days of email is gone - including from the Executive Office of the President and the Office of the Vice President, for hundreds of days between 2003 and 2005.

Mike Huckabee: “When I was in college, we used to take a popcorn popper, because that was the only thing they would let us use in the dorm, and we would fry squirrels in a popcorn popper in the dorm room.” (sick..)

Intelligence officials on both sides of the Atlantic question al Qaeda role in Bhutto killing:

Because Pakistani officials refused to demand an autopsy on former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and hosed away evidence at the scene of her killing, her assassination last December may never be solved.

However, some current and former US and British intelligence officials now say the evidence points to Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence Agency (ISI) – the country’s security services – not to al Qaeda, as Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf, Bush CIA Director Michael Hayden, and news reports have claimed.

Israel flattens Hamas ministry in Gaza Strip:

Israel bombed the Hamas-run Interior Ministry in Gaza and closed border crossings with the strip on Friday, sharply escalating what it called a campaign to halt Palestinian rocket attacks.

Continuing updates from BradBlog on the recount in New Hampshire.

Anyone remember Steven Howards? He is the gentleman who in June of 2006 walked up to Dick Cheney and told him what he thought of the Iraq War and walked away, only to be arrested a few minutes late by the Secret Service - in front of his young son - for assault.. Well, he is taking Cheney and the Secret Service to task. More on this from The Carpetbagger Report.

Its not too late to sign the petition by Congressman Robert Wexler calling for hearings into the impeachment of Dick Cheney.

On to the views:

Scott Horton of Harper’s Magazine writes a great piece today on the destruction if the CIA torture tapes, and discusses the “official” story that is starting to take shape..

Roberto Lovato of AlterNet writes asking “Who Will Take the Fall for the CIA Torture Tape Scandal?”

Robert Fisk’s article “Bush’s Tragic Dream World” at Truthdig takes a closer look at Bush’s recent trip to the Middle East, especially the Saudi Arabia piece.

Tom Englehardt examines the rhetoric of “progress” and “hope” that are now being deploying against the Iraqis by the Washington press corps.

Don’t miss “Holy Constitution!” by Joe Conason.

And the blues…

Here’s Count Basie playing a duet with bassist Cleveland Eaton. Trombone solo is by Booty Wood. Carnegie Hall Concert, 1981. This is one cool bass solo..
