Here is some pretty depressing news to all of us hoping and praying that if justice will not be served here in the United States, the Hague will take care of it. Via Human Rights Watch. Although this was news back in 2002, I doubt too many people know of it or how it is affecting countries trying to support the ICC today.
(New York, August 3, 2002) A new law supposedly protecting U.S. servicemembers from the International Criminal Court shows that the Bush administration will stop at nothing in its campaign against the court, Human Rights Watch warned today.
“The states that have ratified this treaty are trying to strengthen the rule of law. The Bush administration is trying to punish them for that.”Richard Dicker

U.S. President George Bush today signed into law the American Servicemembers Protection Act of 2002, which is intended to intimidate countries that ratify the treaty for the International Criminal Court (ICC). The new law authorizes the use of military force to liberate any American or citizen of a U.S.-allied country being held by the court, which is located in The Hague. This provision, dubbed the “Hague invasion clause,” has caused a strong reaction from U.S. allies around the world, particularly in the Netherlands.In addition, the law provides for the withdrawal of U.S. military assistance from countries ratifying the ICC treaty, and restricts U.S. participation in United Nations peacekeeping unless the United States obtains immunity from prosecution. At the same time, these provisions can be waived by the president on “national interest” grounds.
“The states that have ratified this treaty are trying to strengthen the rule of law,” said Richard Dicker, director of the International Justice Program at Human Rights Watch. “The Bush administration is trying to punish them for that.”
Dicker pointed out that many of the ICC’s biggest supporters are fragile democracies and countries emerging from human rights crises, such as Sierra Leone, Argentina and Fiji.
The law is part of a multi-pronged U.S. effort against the International Criminal Court. On May 6, in an unprecedented move, the Bush administration announced it was “renouncing” U.S. signature on the treaty. In June, the administration vetoed continuation of the U.N. peacekeeping force in Bosnia in an effort to obtain permanent immunity for U.N. peacekeepers. In July, U.S. officials launched a campaign around the world to obtain bilateral agreements that would grant immunity for Americans from the court’s authority. Yesterday, Washington announced that it obtained such an agreement from Romania.

For more on the Hague Invasion Act look here. Here is an excerpt.
“This Congressional action is part of a multi-pronged effort of the US government to undermine international justice, international law and international peacekeeping,” stated William R. Pace, Convenor of the global Coalition for the International Criminal Court. Pace added, “As an American, I am ashamed of the lies and hypocrisy of the US government towards the ICC, and the disastrous reversal of US leadership on international law and justice during the new Bush Administration.”
If there are no international crimes being committed, why go to all the trouble of passing this? Does this mean the end of our dreams for justice? Sound in on it. What do you think?

One of the first things Bush did when he took office after the 2000 elections was pull the US out of the ICC. For a list of all the ICC nation (state) members, go here.
BushCo knew what their plans were long before we ever invaded Iraq. And ever since, he/they has/have been working tirelessly to ensure that they will never be held accountable for the crimes they commit against anyone.
The telecom immunity is purely to ensure that their crimes against our country are never exposed.
Come on 4th estate…DO YOUR FUCKING JOBS!! If we had any real journalists out there they would be climbing over themselves vying for the multiple Pulitzer Prizes that await anyone left who might have a conscience.
The ICC does have a clause that it will step in if the own country won’t do anything to resolve crimes against humanity. Whether you have to be a member or not, that is unclear.
All I know is that it sucks thinking that these uber criminals can get away with what they have gotten away with.
We are in the saddest times in the history of the United States. Short of slavery, this is the worst period in our history.
Republicans have got to go.

My brother-in-law works for The Hague, hunting down war criminals. I daydream about him being the one to bring these guys in for trial. I wish..

This was huge news then in Europe. We all knew Bush was planning something bad, when he did that.

EV, and not a peep here. Not one. None that I read (and I read EVERYTHING). Not a single thing from the CM (corporate media), and nothing on the teevees (although, at that time I rarely turned one on).
Talk about being Bushwhacked.
And 27% of the population still support him.
Yes, indeed, there are times I am embarrassed by being American – and that we lie and torture, well, ’nuff said.
Muse, I will be sending very fond thoughts for your bro-in-law in hopes that he can do just that.

It’s sometimes easier, if you see things from abroad. But your journalists are definitely not doing their job. The press is useless.
Nevermind, ours is going the same way.
Good thing we have us and livefrankly

What are we really seeing here?
The world’s greatest remaining “superpower”…the world’s “policeman” operating as a law unto itself, delegating to itself the right to be prosecutor, judge, jury and executioner;
insulating itself from all accountability;
going to wars on borrowed funds;
reducing its revenue sources by eliminating taxes on those most able to afford to pay;
depleting its treasury through no-bid contracts to off-shore corporations who pay nothing back in taxes and merely transfer wealth away from the U.S.;
transfering wealth away from the working class through shady mortgage practices.
We are seeing the calculated, orchestrated, planned destruction of the United States of America.
