The internet is abuzz. McCain may make Alaska Governor Sarah Palin his running mate.
The Trail reports:
Speculation quickly turned to a dark-horse candidate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. The Atlantic’s Mark Ambinder was the first to report that a private plane from Anchorage landed last night at a private airport about 30 miles from here.
The private plane is connected to a McCain fundraiser.
There have been more female names dropped recently, among them Condoleeza Rice and Carly Fiorina.
Poor Mitt..
UPDATE:CNBC calls it for Palin!
UPDATE II: Palin is under investigation for abuse of power!
UPDATE III: Audio from her spokesperson, shows the lack of openness and transparency in her government.

It will be Lieberman, IMO.
August 29, 2008 at 6:52 am
Oh good lord, willy. That would make it into a slam dunk for Obama. Or it would over here.
August 29, 2008 at 7:03 am
Once again, you think these elections aren’t rigged in America? Just everywhere else? Come on. republican companies OWN the electronic voting machines and it is ILLEGAL to try and check the software they use to count the votes.
Give me a break.
A Lieberman Pick proves one of two things;
1. they don’t care about how people vote republican or democrat, and that means nothing good for the U.S., or Obama supporters for that matter….
2. the same people from AEI that advised Bush/Cheney throughout their “elections” are now with McCain and they probably wouldn’t set up Lieberman to be robbed… A SECOND TIME.
No, picking Lieberman is a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad sign for democrats and Obama-Progressives and for that matter, the rest of the civilized world.
By comparison, Lieberman makes Cheney look rational, and that is a fact.
August 29, 2008 at 7:06 am
and by the way, ABC is reporting that Gov. Palin is still in Alaska, for what that is worth. The McCain camp is putting out all kinds of misinfo to build the press hype for his announcement. I guess they are trying to take some of the spotlight from Obama after his speech last night.
Anyway, i hope I am wrong about Lieberman. i really do.
August 29, 2008 at 7:19 am
Glad it ain’t Lieberman, willy. CNBC Just confirmed Palin, it seems.
August 29, 2008 at 7:26 am
Who the fuck is this woman?
Are they hoping to reel in the whiney Hillary “supporters” with her?
August 29, 2008 at 7:29 am
She’s a beauty contestant, so McCain can envision her in a bikini and she’s pro-life, anti-gay, has five kids and returned to work a couple of days after giving birth to her youngest.
This is all a joke, right?? Or is he serious?
August 29, 2008 at 7:31 am
What does she think she’s doing — returning to work after having children!?
She’s destroying our future generations!!!!

August 29, 2008 at 7:33 am
Ugh, she’s from Idaho.
August 29, 2008 at 7:34 am
She went to U of I. Ugh!
August 29, 2008 at 7:36 am
Oh, she’s perfect.
**holding nose**
August 29, 2008 at 7:36 am
I certainly hope CNBC is correct.
August 29, 2008 at 7:38 am
Good morning, Willy.
Did you read her Wiki entry? She’s a shoo in.
August 29, 2008 at 7:41 am
CNN is now reporting confirmation from McCain Camp.
Hi Zooey, yes I read it.
http://willyloman.wordpress.com/2008/08/29/its-not-romney-or-pawlenty/
apparently you haven’t been to my site this morning.
August 29, 2008 at 7:43 am
Nope.
Getting ready for school.
August 29, 2008 at 7:43 am
1. Palin is strongly pro-life and belongs to Feminists for Life.
2. “Palin’s tenure is noted for her independence from big oil companies, while still promoting resource development…”
3. “Brought to statewide attention because of her whistleblowing on ethical violations by state Republican Party leaders…”
4. “She opposes same-sex marriage, but she has stated that she has gay friends and is receptive to gay and lesbian concerns…”
Oh yeah, “shoe in” alright. Feminist for Life? Gay Friends? Whistle blower on Republican Party? Yeah, that’s got Republican written all over it…
August 29, 2008 at 8:22 am
She was a beauty pageant contestant Miss Alaska runner up. Kay Baily Huthison (?) said that McCain met with her personally and decided she was qualified. Really, you can’t make this shit up. I wonder what Cindy thinks.
August 29, 2008 at 8:23 am
Can they believe that Hillary supporters want to see this woman come out of nowhere and steal Hillary’s “rightful place”?
August 29, 2008 at 8:26 am
This is nuts.
McCain is going after the Catholic vote, the women’s vote, the Pro-life vote, and pushing for drilling in ANWR from the Alaskan perspective.. This is a dig at Obama for “passing over” Clinton, like HE’S not afraid to have a woman as a running mate..
She is meant to soften McCain’s image, she is attractive to look at, she’s a mom of 5 (one with Down Syndrome), and she will take the steam out of Biden in debates. He won’t be able to go after her as hard because it will look like he is picking on her and people will feel sympathy for her and come to her defense..
What a crazy way to take over the news cycle in the wake of Obama’s unbelievably fantastic speech last night. Since this news hit not another word has been spoken on the news I am listening to about Obama’s night.
In what way is she qualified to be president for crying out loud..
August 29, 2008 at 9:23 am
My mom just phoned me to say that Palin’s youngest child with Down Syndrome is only 4 months old.
Now, having been the parent of a child with Down Syndrome, when my son was 4 months old, it took over my entire life. It was a 24 hour a day job. I had great difficulty caring for my other three children and running my home at the same time. If she is running for president, then who is caring for this child (let alone her 4 other children)??
What are they thinking??
August 29, 2008 at 9:31 am
Great Point muse, I would guess a full-time live in nanny. That is the only way I can see she could make this work. Plus, I would throw in a housekeeper because the nanny has her hands full.
The latest and greatest Rasmussen poll showing that 28% of Hillary’s voters still won’t vote for Obama.
August 29, 2008 at 9:40 am
Here’s her positions on the environment (and drilling in ANWR):

August 29, 2008 at 9:47 am
I’m listening to Palin speak. There you go.. She is quoting Hillary Clinton’s ‘18 million cracks in the ceiling’ and sounding like she is now carrying on Hillary’s mission for women. There’s the strategy.
And she can match Biden – her oldest son leaves for Iraq on September 11th (I wonder if the date is a coincidence..).
August 29, 2008 at 9:51 am
She’s a liar and corrupt. I have a new post up, it’s rare to be able to find such a bombshell about a candidate so easily. I think McCain and the GOP have given up on November and are just going through the motions now.
August 29, 2008 at 10:02 am
And then there’s this:
http://officeofstrategicinfluence.com/webcomic/?id=47
McCain’s crazy.
August 29, 2008 at 10:07 am
Someone being interviewed just referred to Palin as an “energy expert”. She totally supports drilling in ANWR.
All the conservatives and religious right will hear is she is a mother of 5 and pro-life.
August 29, 2008 at 10:09 am
Sorry, I can’t take this serious anymore. Of all the mistakes Mccain could make. She’s dead already, just look at the stories that come up in reddit now. And it’s only hours..
August 29, 2008 at 10:14 am
EV, refering to Palin, the Gov. of Alaska as a “maid” is offensive. characterizing her in that subserviant stereotype is something that I would have expected from the republicans.
August 29, 2008 at 10:17 am
thanks you. please remove the above comment and this one, thanks again.
August 29, 2008 at 10:25 am
She has a Flag Pin, it must be official!
August 29, 2008 at 10:26 am
Great post EV, as you were posting that I was reading an article into that very issue. Great part is it just happened recently.
He went with her because of the 28% of Hillary voters that won’t vote for Obama. He thinks he found a way to get them.
Right-Wingers like Malkin are jumping up and down for joy…
August 29, 2008 at 11:00 am
This woman’s DS son is only 4 months old?
Wow — priorities, huh?
Maybe her hubby is a stay at home dad? I mean, who’s giving this child the level of care he needs?
August 29, 2008 at 11:18 am
Her hubby works for BP Oil. What a surprise..
August 29, 2008 at 11:24 am
not anymore he doesn’t. He will be picking out the drapes in the VP residence and trying to figure out how to get into that big vault Cheney left in the office. (guys need projects to work on)
August 29, 2008 at 11:26 am
anyone wonder if bin Laden is in that vault, just waiting for the right political moment to hop out and go ‘boo”? or is it just me?
August 29, 2008 at 11:36 am
Yes. Maybe they have OBL on ice.. In Alaska!!
August 29, 2008 at 11:52 am
ahhhhhh! see? I’ll make a conspiracy theorist out of you all yet….
Of course, that’s the Alaska connection. Chimpy looked for OBL everywhere in his office, but he forgot to look in Ted Stevens office!
Very clever!
August 29, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Keep looking. whatever I find and post will be here, too in an update. To think from the first inkling, that she could be the one, to the time until all those facts about her came out it took only a few hours.
Who vetted her? Her CV’s a bonanza of negatives.
August 29, 2008 at 12:52 pm
You know, I am wondering if she isn’t still a diversion. To take some of the attention off of Obama’s historic moment, they have one of their own.
I don’t know. Everything they ALL do is so contrieved these days. they make cynics out of us all.
August 29, 2008 at 12:56 pm
I agree with that Willy. Contrived. A perfect word. Just like Palin announcing her son was being deployed to Iraq ON September 11th.. Does that somehow trump the news that Biden’s son was being deployed to Iraq? Some special significance to leaving on THAT date?
I have the utmost respect for those putting their lives on the line by serving their country, but using it for political gain or game-playing is not okay.
I can’t believe they have me thinking like this.. I just know that as she said that part, my husband and I both groaned out loud at the same time..
August 29, 2008 at 1:32 pm
I just heard on Thom Hartman that she’s a wolf hunter herself and though the people have voted twice to stop hunting them in Alaska she worked with the legislature to ignore that. Coincidentally I received this today:
Dear
I have some sad news. Unfortunately, Alaska voters defeated a ballot initiative on Tuesday that would have ended the state’s brutal aerial hunting program.
As we prepare for another bloody aerial hunting season in Alaska, we must redouble our efforts to pass the PAW Act. Please tell your Representative to support the PAW Act, and then encourage 3 friends to do the same »
This news, on top of the recent brutal and illegal killing of 14 wolf pups shows how much we still need to do to protect our wildlife. Just weeks ago, state wildlife agency personnel staked out a known wolf denning site — a practice that is illegal under Alaska law — and, using helicopters, they gunned down 14 adult wolves from the air, part of an effort to boost caribou populations in Southwest Alaska.
When they landed, they found the 14 helpless pups in the nearby dens — just weeks old — and methodically shot each one in the head. 28 wolves gunned down in all.
It’s appalling. It’s brutal. It seriously makes me question the state of humanity. But I know there are compassionate people who are fighting the good fight — as evidenced by the strong bipartisan support for the Protect America’s Wildlife (PAW) Act to bring an end to Alaska’s aerial hunting program. Now we must ensure that this important bill gets passed. Please take a moment today to urge your Representative to support this important wildlife-saving legislation
And on Thom Hartman they said she authorized this.
August 29, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Perhaps they think people will figure Obama is such a shoe in they won’t bother to vote. This woman one heartbeat from the presidency. Unbelievable. I saw her in an old interview and she speaks like she’s in the movie “Fargo”.
August 29, 2008 at 1:54 pm
She’s the ultimate “assassination insurance.”
August 29, 2008 at 1:56 pm
ZOOOEY!!
August 29, 2008 at 2:01 pm
