Do You Want That Hamburger With Or Without Ketchup?

With the Summer picnic time “officially” beginning this weekend, I thought it would be an opportune time to get some statistics on what people put on their hamburgers.

Remember the uproar when President Obama requested “spicy mustard or Dijon” on his cheeseburger? With all the knickers getting knotted and bunched, you would think that he had invaded a sovereign nation or perhaps shredded the US Constitution or ordered “enhanced interrogations” like waterboarding.

Here’s the poll…

My preference below the fold…

Friday Open Thread — You Can’t Make This Stuff Up

The Holy Father has himself a Facebook page. He wants you to be his friend.

You won’t get an email saying Pope Benedict added you as a friend and you can’t “poke” him or write on his wall, but the Vatican is still keen to use the networking site Facebook to woo young people back to church.

A new Vatican website, www.pope2you.net, has gone live, offering an application called “The pope meets you on Facebook,” and another allowing the faithful to see the Pope’s speeches and messages on their iPhones or iPods.

I could be wrong, but at first glance I’m thinking that “fans” and “friends” are going to be dyed-in-the-wool Roman Catholics already. And my personal opinion is that the Roman Catholic Church isn’t going to woo anyone, former Catholics or new Catholics, until they drag themselves out of the Middle Ages. Aping modern technology isn’t going to cut it. Deal with ridiculous rules about birth control, the ordination of women, and celibacy among priests, and then get back to us.

Your Mileage May Vary — which is what an Open Thread is all about.

Jon Stewart compares yesterday’s dueling speeches

Jon Stewart takes a look at the “National Security” speeches given yesterday by President Obama and the ‘Dick’ Cheney.

It just amazed me how many times Cheney said ’9/11′, and how he STILL throws it out there as a sign of success that we weren’t hit again after 9/11… We WERE hit on 9//11 – on THEIR watch, and after they ignored all the warnings! As Jon Stewart says:

“Isn’t it incredible how success is defined by the one thing you succeeded at..? By your metric, Clinton was successful after the ’93 World Trade Center bombings. In fact, you could make anything that way.. I have a 100% successful marriage, in that my philandering was never followed by physical violence..”

I have to say.. The comparison of Obama’s speech, and excerpts of GW’s speeches was more than a little unnerving..

“Prolonged Detention” — WTF?

In the middle of an otherwise excellent speech, President Obama dropped this bomb:  Prolonged detention.

I guess there are bad guys at Gitmo whose cases have been so badly botched, that a criminal trial is impossible.  How we know these prisoners really are bad guys, I don’t know.  They have never been charged, tried, or adjudicated as ANYTHING, let alone terrorists.  But President Obama wants to set up a legal framework to make it all okay to keep certain detainees locked up indefinitely.

Imagine that.  America:  The land of the free, the home of the brave.  Now, we’re not only the country who tortures, we’re also the country who will lock up suspected terrorists FOREVER — because we just don’t know what else to do with some of the prisoners at Gitmo.

I am just stunned.  There is no way “prolonged detention” is justified.

What the hell is going on here…?

HOLY E-MAIL! – Open Thread for Thursday

One day God was looking down at Earth and saw all of the rascally behavior that was going on.? So He called one of His angels and sent the angel to Earth for a time.

When he returned, he told God, ‘Yes, it is bad on Earth; 95% are misbehaving and only 5% are not.?

God thought for a moment and said, ‘Maybe I had better send down a second angel to get another opinion.’?

So God called another angel and sent him to Earth for a time.

When the angel returned he went to God and said, ‘Yes, it’s true.

The Earth is in decline; 95% are misbehaving, but 5% are being good.’

God was not pleased. So He decided to e-mail the 5% that were good, because he wanted to encourage them, and give them a little something to help them keep going.?

Do you know what the e-mail said?

The Word: “I know you are but what am I?”

This was just brilliant..

Colbert has a suggestion for the GOP on their plan to rebrand the Democratic party. Instead of calling it eh “Democrat Socialist Party” he suggested this instead:

“The GOP just needs a name for Democrats that reminds them of something they’ve had terrible experience with… We’ll call the Democrats ‘the Republicans.’”

“I think this strategy is foolproof,” Colbert concluded. “Because when you’ve spent the last 20 years poisoning your own name, the only logical step is to destroy somebody else’s.”

I received the following email today….and I took action to give my views on the Healthcare debate.  You can too.

Joanne –

The chance to finally reform our nation’s health care system is here. While Congress moves rapidly to produce a detailed plan, I have made it clear that real reform must uphold three core principles — it must reduce costs, guarantee choice, and ensure quality care for every American.

As we know, challenging the status quo will not be easy. Its defenders will claim our goals are too big, that we should once again settle for half measures and empty talk. Left unanswered, these voices of doubt might yet again derail the comprehensive reform we so badly need. That’s where you come in.

When our opponents spread fear and confusion about the changes we seek, your support for these core principles will show clarity and resolve. When the lobbyists for the status quo tell Congress to hold back, your personal story will give them the courage to press forward.

Join my call: Ask Congress to pass real health care reform in 2009.

After adding your name, please consider sharing your personal story about the importance of health care reform in your life and the lives of those you love.

I will be personally reviewing many of these signatures and stories. If you speak up now, your voice will make a difference.

Entropy

This post is by guest blogger, Medjhiesco, and is also posted on his blog Story Time.  Enjoy!

Entropy: The process of degradation of a system into decay. Or maybe the Newtonian Laws about inertia.

For centuries we have believed these things only apply in the physical sciences. I’m wondering if there isn’t an application in the economic world. As in the bigger something gets (more inertia) the more difficult it is to change direction. Or that everything answers to entropy.

Call it the Jabba da Hutt school of economics. Slowly built, using intimidation and manipulation through fear of reprisal until an entity gains a modicum of control. As the control increases, the morbid obesity of the controlling entity does as well. Fear plays a major part in the building phase but as the controlling entity gains weight the ability to respond diminishes. Take the US car companies as an example. They slowly built themselves into a juggernaut, burying rivals (like Tucker and Rambler) until they controlled the market. Or the banks in NY, slowly building to such a size they were ‘too big to fail’.

I submit, they are too big to survive. They, both the banks and the car companies, are outsized, incapable of generating what they need to survive. They are depending on the fear tactic that they are too big, too important to be allowed to die when the truth is they have out lived their value. Let GM and Chrysler die off, abandon their US operations and leave them open to someone who has not become so bloated they will listen to the needs of the market rather than dictating them. Both are looking to retain life by importing vehicles made off shore that they have been selling to the rest of the world. Both will die off in the US for their blindness.

Entropy. The process of degradation of a system into decay. Welcome to the US. The only problem is that the people who have not been part of this gluttony just don’t want to accept it. Let the big dogs fail, die off. May the American public discover they can throw the chain around Jabba’s throat. They aren’t too big to fail, they are over ripe.
