Oscar G. Mayer, retired chairman of the Wisconsin-based meat processing company that bears his name, has died at the age of 95.
Mayer’s wife, Geraldine, said he died of old age Monday age at Hospice Care in Fitchburg.
He was the third Oscar Mayer in the family that founded Oscar Mayer Foods, which was once the largest private employer in Madison. His grandfather, Oscar F. Mayer, died in 1955 and his father, Oscar G. Mayer Sr., died in 1965.
Died of old age…I guess he didn’t eat Oscar Mayer wieners.
Loved your car, Mr Mayer. Rest in Peace.

When I was in the 7th grade we were taken on a tour of the Oscar Mayer plant in Madison. I have not knowingly eaten an OM product since. While the senior Oscars may have had decent ideas about processed meats, they eventually bought into the idea of anything goes to make a buck.

Mmmmm…nothing encapsulated the American zeitgiest of industry, profit and ‘can-do’ attitude like a pressure-treated phosphorus and nitrate tube of meat byproduct-byproduct, encased in machined cellulose film.
Frankly (Hah!) I’m surprised Oscar Mayer didn’t think to inject their ’shit-fingers’ with corn syrup, nicotine and Zanax as well to increase sales even more.
Or maybe they did?
Of course I’m sure the whole having-to buy
810 Franks but108 hot-dog buns was a complete accident of the invisible hand of the free market.July 11, 2009 at 12:05 pm

You got the item counts in reverse.
Zooey,
Maybe he injected himself with the preservatives.

Walt,
I got it wrong because I never bought the damn things—I just knew they never added up properly.
