I stumbled on this video while looking for something Woodstock-y. I actually attended this “pop festival” in Rotterdam, the summer of 1970. My friends and I drove up from Paris and just as the weekend opened, a hitchhiker we picked up gave me a chunk of hashish the size of my fist. The rest is history … a blurred, fuzzy, entertaining history.
I was afraid even to look at this video, because it’s almost entirely footage of the crowd. Somewhere out there in the chaos is a 21 year old Gummitch, stoned out of his gourd (not so unusual at the time, but still, this is Holland, not California).
And, well, I missed Pink Floyd, who came out very late on Sunday night. I remember sitting up in my sleeping bag and cheering and the next thing I knew it was Monday morning and almost everyone was gone.
It is weird as I don’t have tv yet I saw a very cool Pink Floyd documentary type deal today on tv.
At the risk of sounding like unicorns and bad poetry, Pink Floyd had an actual impact on how I expressed my view of the world.
And dbadass, is your logo thingy by any chance from “Breakfast of Champions?” Because I regard Mr. Vonnegut’s novels in much the same way I regard Pink Floyd.
hi, prim8
“At the risk of sounding like unicorns and bad poetry, Pink Floyd had an actual impact on how I expressed my view of the world.
LOL. but you are confusing the era of velvet painting and van-art with the words and lyrics of Pink Floyd.
One of These Days I’m Going to Chop You Up Into Little Pieces” for example, doesn’t remind me of unicorns.
And there’s no bad poetry on Dark Side of the Moon.
BTW speaking of “logos” , WordPress calls it a “Gravatar”.
Currently yours is an automatically generated one and it looks like a cartoon virus—they always do.
You can change it for something personal by going to My Account in the dark gray control bar at the very top pf the page and then pick Edit Profile and Change Gravatar.
It’s easiest (I think ) if you pick an image from your PC rather than the web.)
The gravatar works on any WordPress site. The more you post with the generic gravatar, the longer it takes for any new personal gravatar to propagate as the new will replace every instance of the old.
If your WordPress commenting history grows to say. 100 comments or more (easily accomplished) it can take hours for all the gravatars to be replaced. Being a personal thing, everyone who has to wait for the propagation gets really annoyed with the wait! (I did!)
Cheers!
5th, you’re preaching to the choir about Floyd lyrics – especially that Meddle-through-Final Cut run of albums, although others are pretty tasty. But there are still a lot of people about who think those who quote song lyrics are by definition fans of unicorns and bad poetry (I prefer bad unicorns and bawdy limericks).
I always wondered what you guys were talking about when referring to avatars – I am so limited in my computer savvy that I don’t understand half of the acronyms you guys use. Some, like STFU and LMAO, I get by myself, but there are others that I’m quite sure I’m overthinking because they elude me still.
And I still own and use a manuel typewriter, so there’s that resistance to technology thing…
Anywhich, my avatar is not a bad likeness, so I’ll just keep it until I find that perfect picture of a ham sandwich…
And BTW (<-!), I like your posts on TP.

“a Manuel typewriter” ? That’s a keeper!
But take heart, we aren’t tech-snobs here and typos are common and forgiven.
I’m willing to bet (umm….1 billion space-credits?!..) that I have the most kick-ass high-tech system of anyone at The Zoo (all home-built by the way) but my ‘tech-savvy’ ended a decade ago. I know the Internet isn’t “a series of tubes” but I’m past caring what it really is and how it works. All that matters is that I have it and can use it.
I mentioned the avatar because you’ve been here before and also ‘knowing’ you from Think Progress the virtual door is always open at the Zoo for the discerning and eclectic, such as yourself (your recognition of my TP comments has NOTHING to do with anything- *cough*-, I assure you! Swear to god!).
A personal avatar/gravatar just provides the comfort of a “Norm!”-like status here at The Zoo, which functions as a sort of small pub adjacent to the semi-formal ‘Assembly Hall’ of Think Progress.
The Zoo isn’t as subject-matter organized as TP nor anywhere near as populated but it’s a great place to hang out, and though participation can be spotty at times it’s intimacy makes for a great change of pace and offers a more personal site-presence than the more public TP site.
We all have lives outside of the blogosphere (some more than others) but don’t be shy about commenting here–it can be particularly fun and interesting on weekends.
So, as you say, “anywhich”, see if you can drop by and partake of the strange brew of The Zoo a bit more often –I think you’ll develop a taste for it.
Cheers!
Thanks 5th, and I do enjoy this site – it’s nice to find a spot with like-minded people who aren’t so alike you can’t tell them apart.
