Bear Tooth Mountains, Montana

The Bear Tooth Mountains are one of many natural wonders in Montana. I hope the Obama family is enjoying their visit to Yellowstone Park this weekend. It’s one of my favorite places on earth.
It’s the middle of August and we’re having a very strange bit of cooling in Idaho. Yesterday we had a high of 64, and today it will only be 72. Not that I’m complaining, it’s usually about 100 degrees at this time in August. :)
What’s on your mind today?
I stumbled on this video while looking for something Woodstock-y. I actually attended this “pop festival” in Rotterdam, the summer of 1970. My friends and I drove up from Paris and just as the weekend opened, a hitchhiker we picked up gave me a chunk of hashish the size of my fist. The rest is history … a blurred, fuzzy, entertaining history.
I was afraid even to look at this video, because it’s almost entirely footage of the crowd. Somewhere out there in the chaos is a 21 year old Gummitch, stoned out of his gourd (not so unusual at the time, but still, this is Holland, not California).
And, well, I missed Pink Floyd, who came out very late on Sunday night. I remember sitting up in my sleeping bag and cheering and the next thing I knew it was Monday morning and almost everyone was gone.
Starting with Joni Mitchell. This was from the Concert at Big Sur.
Santana – Soul Sacrifice. I saw this group live when I lived in Boston at The Boston Tea Party. The cost of admission was $1.00 and I was sitting on the floor, first row in front of the stage.

Glenn is not having a great summer is he? Advertisers are abandoning his show because of his comments about President Obama being a racist and many other absurdities. But now Jon Stewart shows him directly contradicting himself. Oops.
The Jolly Green Giant, Blue Earth, Minnesota

My brother-in-law is from Blue Earth, so on our roadtrip last summer we stopped by to visit his mother, a truly lovely woman. My niece and nephew insisted that I had to stop by and visit the Green Giant, which is kind of hard to avoid, since it dominates the landscape!
What’s on your mind today?
If only the screaming teabaggers would follow Steven Covey’s advice, then perhaps there would be constructive dialog in these town hall meetings instead disruption.
I’m sure Ms Abram means well, but it’s truly astonishing that she is so ill-informed.
She’s “only 35 years old,” so that means she was of voting age during the Bush years, 9/11, illegal wiretapping and surveillance, the anthrax attacks, the on-going Afghanistan and Iraq wars, Katrina, etc. But now that health care reform is on the table — a program that clearly would help her own family — her ears have perked up. NOW she’s terrified.
Lawrence O’Donnell was quite gentle with her, and thankfully so, because he could have eviscerated this low information voter. Of course, I’m assuming she has voted…
Enraged Americans use town hall meetings to voice their anger over the health care process, and Sarah Palin speaks out against Obama’s plan to kill her baby.
Samantha Bee fights for private death panels, John Oliver believes in universal death panels, and Aasif Mandvi wants whatever scares the public most.
The conservatives don’t have solutions, in fact, they don’t even want this conversation to even take place. The Tea Party organizers view this as a chance “to realistically kill Obama’s agenda.”
FreedomWorks is an organization which continually shows up on the “grassroots” websites against health care reform. They admit they are co-partners to all Tea Party Patriots. FreedomWorks is making sure the discussion at all town hall meetings gets disrupted or completely shut down, so there’s no chance at having any actual debate or discussion on health care reform.

President Obama said, “it turns out that this I guess rose out of a provision in one of the House bills that allowed Medicare to reimburse people for consultations about end of life care” as well as living wills, hospice care, and the like. The “intention,” the president said, was to help patients prepare for “end of life on their own terms.”
President Obama said the “irony” is that one of the chief sponsors of this idea was Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., who “sensibly thought this would expand peoples’ options.”
Devils Tower, Wyoming

This is another summer re-run from last year’s road trip. If you ever get the chance to visit Devils Tower, I highly recommend it. I could have spent the whole day looking at it.
