The Watering Hole: February 8 – WTF?

This story caught my eye. Almost every sane person finds a way to deal with being angry at their kids, I usually leave the room until the anger passes, some use the skills they’ve honed in their professional careers.

A soldier waterboarded his four-year-old daughter because she was unable to recite her alphabet.

Joshua Tabor admitted to police he had used the CIA torture technique because he was so angry.

As his daughter ‘squirmed’ to get away, Tabor said he submerged her face three or four times until the water was lapping around her forehead and jawline.

Tabor, 27, who had won custody of his daughter only four weeks earlier, admitted choosing the punishment because the girl was terrified of water.

Children and the old and the frail are so very vulnerable. Empathy and protecting the weak is the one thing that makes us human. Some of us.

How a simple data CD may bring down Switzerland

A simple Data-CD is about to shake the foundations of  Switzerland itself. How come?

An unknown Data thief has offered German Authorities a CD containing valuable data about some 1’500 tax frauds, for some 2,5 Mio. Euros. Germany may generate a 100 Mio. Euros on back taxes and penalties and the odd bad boy will face jail. This is an impressive return on investment and Germany, as much under pressure financially as most other industrialized nations, does not really want to not use it. Moreover, it is a hard sell to tell your welfare recipients that they have to pay back the  €20, they erroneously received in January and then go on and graciously waive a hundred million. Poor people are voters, too and Angela Merkel is not a political suicide.

I personally have my doubts about the legality of the purchase, but one may well argue that a higher interest is at stake und thus the purchase is legitimate.

So this is an entirely German affair, is it not?

So why are the Swiss so very upset?

Here’s the math:

An estimated 3 Trillion Swiss Francs in Swiss bank accounts are Assets under Management owned by foreigners. 30% to 50% are at least from grey, if not black money, that is   approximately 1 trillion Swiss Francs.

“Switzerland has become a paradise for foreign capital on which tax is not paid. The uproar from foreign governments is understandable.” These are not the words of a critic of the banks, but of private banker Konrad Hummler. He says that around 30%, or CHF 1,000 billion, of the CHF 2,800 billion or so of foreign assets in Swiss banks is untaxed “black money”.

I’m still being conservative. Let’s say 30% of those funds are from German individuals, that makes it 330 billion Swiss Francs.

Let’s say German investors panic, because the only argument for having your money in Switzerland is the banking secrecy (they pay a measly 1% interest here). They are going to get their own money and transfer it elsewhere, or even repatriate the stuff and grudgingly pay the back taxes to avoid a hefty fine or in some cases jail.

More math:

The Swiss GDP is about 500 bn Swiss Francs (2008), the financial sector is generating about 12% of GDP, banks about 7.5% that makes it 37.5 bn. But they may lose 330 bn. They would stop contributing to GDP for almost ten years to refill their coffers.

But banks have equity capital, have they not? Well at least UBS, the biggest player, is still in a load of trouble and struggling to get it’s equity capital quota into a reasonable percentage.

Now add to that the fact that we are talking about bank accounts owned by Germans only, what’s more, we talk about German tax dodgers’ accounts. There are other countries’ citizens involved, too. This adds another hefty sum at stake. Then there are those who have put their money into Swiss accounts legally, but don’t want to be under the general suspicion of being a tax fraud. Again: In sum there are some 3 trillion Swiss Francs at stake. If only a third of it is lost to other markets, Switzerland goes broke.

Some of the more naive here reckon banking secrecy can still be saved. The naivest of them all, the right wing SVP (Swiss People’s Party), even think they can win the next elections by harshly defending the status quo. The Swiss are not so stupid. Still sore about the UBS bailout, they are not prepared to ruin their country to protect a couple of foreign tax frauds and their banksters.

The Watering Hole: February 6 – Eureka

On February 6, 1959 Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments filed the first patent for an integrated circuit. Robert Noyce independently made a similar circuit a six months after Kilby did in 1958 and is generally credited as co-inventor of the integrated circuit. Kilby was merely ticking off time as a new hire while his colleagues were off on vacation in 1958.

This is where it all started! TI had developed a process for slicing and dicing semiconductor substrates into individual transistors, Kilby eliminated the dicing process and inter connected the resulting individual active components with doping techniques – not bad for a new hire!

Heaven Can Wait, but not Republican Filibusters

Senator-elect Scott Brown upped the timetable for his swearing in ceremony from February 11, 2010 to 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. Seems he can’t wait to become the 41st vote in the Republican Filibuster Blockade of President Obama’s initiatives.

From the Associated Press article:

“While Sen.-elect Brown had tentatively planned to be sworn into office on Feb. 11, he has been advised that there are a number of votes scheduled prior to that date. For that reason, he wants certification to occur immediately,”

Thank you, Massachusetts. We will all have to live with the effects of your choice to replace Senator Kennedy. I, for one, would like to know if, over the next several months, Senator Brown lives up to your expectations and truly represents what you voted for. If this bit of news is any indication, Massachusetts voters want to put a quick halt to any hope of implementing any of President Obama’s initiatives.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

UPDATE–

From the Huffington Post:

Less than an hour after Scott Brown was sworn in as the Republican junior senator from Massachusetts, he made it clear where he stands on bipartisan compromise.

“I’ll be the 41st vote, not the 60th vote,” Brown said at a brief press conference following his oath of office Thursday night.

This, from the self-avowed “independent voice.”

The Watering Hole: February 4 – Swiss Banksters

I’ve rarely had so much fun when watching news and tv-discussions as during the last two days. Switzerland already has had a bad 2009 and 2010 seems to start even worse.

Germany’s biggest post war tax evasion scandal is centered around…you knew it, didn’t you…a Swiss Bank.  So now, why would the Swiss be so touchy about Germans, living in Germany, having committed the offense of tax evasion in Germany, being prosecuted by means of a (admittedly stolen)  Data-CD obtained in Germany by German authorities? Because German Tax Authorities are going to buy that stolen CD.

The real reason behind the Swiss upset is not legality, they are using unlawfully obtained data themselves, if there is a higher gain at stake. It’s the estimated € 300 bn sitting in Swiss bank accounts (sorry german link only) a large part of which will maybe be repatriated to Germany. A huge blow to the Swiss Banks.

To be fair many Swiss nowadays know fully well, that the banking secrecy laws of the country are designed mostly to attract wealthy customers and their money, nevermind the tax laws in other countries, and are for abandoning the banking secrecy. Some loudmouths beg to differ. Believe me, it’s interesting to watch.

For the German tax frauds shivering in their shoes about this CD I feel only Schadenfreude. They felt so glib and superior when they told us taxpayers how stupid we were to pay taxes, that I can’t help but wallow in their panic.

The Watering Hole: February 3 – Serpico

On February 3, 1971 New York Police Officer Frank Serpico was shot in the face during a drug bust in Brooklyn and survived to later testify against police corruption. Many believe that NYPD officers had tried to kill him.

The movie trailer, starring Al Pacino,  is here.

The Watering Hole: February 2 – Groundhog’s Day

Punxsutawney Phil is starring in Groundhog day 2010, today on February 2, 2010.  That’s the annual holiday when if Phil the groundhog comes out of his hole and sees his shadow it means we will have six more dreaded weeks of winter.  If he does not see his shadow, it means winter will be cut short and we’ll enjoy an early Spring!  The Groundhog day tradition has been going on since back in the 1800′s, making Phil a national icon who gets his day every year. In case you’re wondering about past weather predictions by Phil, here’s a look:

In 2008 and 2009, Phil predicted 6 more weeks of winter. In 2007, Phil forecasted an early spring. In 2000-2006, Phil predicted 6 more weeks of winter. As you can see in the past 10 years or so, Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog has come up with the forecast of an extended winter season.

The way the weather has been going recently, that could hold true yet again when Phil emerges from his burrow on this Groundhog Day.

PETA wants to replace Phil with a robot.  If that happens, nothing will ever be the same.

The Watering Hole: February 1, Up for Adoption

Ten US citizens have been arrested on child trafficking charges in Haiti. They had the best intentions, of course. Pity that most of the “orphans” not only had relatives, but a mom and a dad, too. Those ten may have been simply a bit simple, but the trade in children for adoptions and child abuse is good business in Haiti right now. While we all agree that trafficking children for abuse is criminal, I feel many of the latter day adoptions are based on selfish reasons which amount to a crime against those children and their families, too.

There are legitimate reasons to adopt a child, of course, and I am fully supportive of these cases but sadly in the wake of the likes of Angelina Jolie and Madonna, children have turned into an lifestyle accessory. Just as a fact check. It costs approximately $ 9’000  a year to raise a child in the US. An average Haitian family lives off appr. $ 1’300  a year. And never mind the adoption fees.

There are many trustworthy organizations out there to help families in Haiti and elsewhere, if people would only concentrate on helping the communities and by this many children instead of concentrating on “owning ” one.
