This Is Worth Reading…

I came across this over at the Huffington Post this afternoon… James Zogby’s thoughts on Republicans’ behavior of late, and more specifically, around the debate and passage of the Health Care bill. It’s disturbing, to say the least.

Before dashing off to celebrate a hard fought victory in achieving health care reform, it is important to reflect on a deeply disturbing aspect of the debate that I believe spells danger ahead.

A Republican talking point repeated ad nauseam during yesterday’s debate pounded on the theme that they, and they alone, had the right to speak for “the will of the American people.” This took different forms: “the American people have spoken,” or “you (Democrats) are ignoring/imposing your views on the American people” or “the American people have sent a message,” etc. All making the same point — that the GOP speaks for the American people.

I’ve noticed the same tone in the comments of many, many Republicans, self-identified conservatives, and Tea Partiers the last few months… that they, and only they, are Real Americans. From Sarah Palin’s constant comments about what she considered the “pro-America” areas of the country to be, right through endless talk about Obama’s place of birth and whether or not he was even qualified to run for office, let alone hold it, up to Republican hyperbole during the debate over the healthcare bill.

Zogby goes on to say:

The idea that the minority party represents the “will of the people” (not some of the people, but “the people”) is the seedling of a totalitarian mindset. In this mindset — democracy doesn’t matter, ideas are not to be discussed, and opposing views are not to respected. What matters is that they alone have truth, they alone are metaphysically connected to the “mind of the people” can interpret their will, and because they have truth and speak for the people, others represent a threat and must be silenced and stopped.

I can only agree with Mr. Zogby on this. There is an increasingly ominous tone to the comments so many Republicans, conservatives, Tea Partiers, and anyone else who identifies with other side of our political spectrum are making.

We need to keep a watchful eye on this.

  3. You ought to seed that one too..

That pretty much would be the salient point huh…

The Repubs & tea Partiers just aren’t racist… they’re flipping off the state and usurping that official right to force here. Harris-Lacewell explains it quite well.

    Very… scary…

  4. Reading Zooey’s link reminded me of something I heard today on Hartmann.

We are all familiar with Senator Jim DeMint’s “Waterloo” remark concerning President Obama and the Healthcare Reform bill. Everybody, especially me, has concentrated on the image of Waterloo as a metaphor. Today, Thom Hartmann spent a large segment of his show focusing on the next phrase, and I had given it very little thought until his show today.

    “It will break him.”

What did DeMint really mean by this? Did he really mean to “break him”, as unruly slaves were “broken”, much as a wild horse is broken, or tamed, so one can get exactly what one wants from the now domesticated creature? Thom read excerpts from a book written by Frederick Douglass, that supported this theory.

I now believe the purpose of defeating HCR was to “break” Obama, put him in his place, and guarantee that for the rest of his Presidency, he would do exactly what the Republicans needed to retake control of government.

Here’s the clip, listen to it again if you need to.

  5. The Nazi’s had a totalitarian form of Government and so do the Communists. No wonder the white, right wingers and teabaggers are so obsessed with Hitler and Stalin. They self-identify with Hitler and Stalin and that is why they project their own images onto the President and anyone else that doesn’t agree with them.

  6. BnF – Interesting article about the Presbyterians. Calvin taught predestination which is something that the current “fundies” fully believe in. That is why they don’t care if they act anti-christian because they are predestined to go to heaven regardless of their behavior. Jesus died to for their sins so their sins have already been paid for. This explains their inability to assume responsibility for their poor behavior.

A little known fact is that during the early 1800’s until about 1855, most Americans were what we would now consider agnostics. It was only in the late 1850’s that there was a “fundamentalist revival” in this country.

  7. Severed gas line found at home of Perriello brother

Updated: 1:55 p.m. Federal and local authorities are investigating a severed gas line at the home of U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello’s brother, discovered the day after Tea Party activists posted the address online so opponents could “drop by” and “express their thanks” for Perriello’s vote in favor of health care reform.
The gas line connected a propane tank to a gas grill on the home’s screened-in porch, according to sources in Tom Perriello’s office.

  8. HoR, somebody is going to get hurt pretty soon…..

…. I saw Gary Locke on Jon Stewart this week (catch that one – Jon does 15 minutes as Glenn Beck – priceless stuff)…. and Gary said that the US Census people go door-to-door on May 1st to all those who don’t send in their census….. that could be trouble.

  9. TtT – there could be serious issues for census workers this year, especially after someone like Michele Bachmann stirring up the stew with her hateful messages.

    • It is not limited to the US that the Right claims to represent the “true people”. We have it in Europe as well. It is a hallmark of right wing extremeism to claim sole ownership of a people’s true character and thus excluding everybody who thinks differently as an outsider. Scientology does it as well, most religions, of course, too.

This is an important post, pointing it out. People need to be watchful and signs are (as HoR has shown with his link) that “outsiders” are now physically threatened and assaulted. This is the hallmark of fascism. The Tea Party Movement is fascist and dangerous.

      **my five ç**

  10. Cats,

the article also talked about the continual exclusion by purification process by which the “true believers” were subjected to never-ending litmus tests. Much as we see in the Tea Party/Republican neo-con/neo-christian movement today.

It’s always an “us against them” “you’re either with us, or with the terrorists” mentality. Always an either/or proposition, with no quarter given. No negotiating. No compromising. No allowance for even the slightest differing opinion. In essense, a cult mentality.
