Again.
Two weeks back, I posted videos from some of the most influential female singers in my life. Most were what I’d call “singer-songwriters” in a fairly folk-y vein. This group mostly goes off in a different direction.
More below the fold, please, and do not hesitate to chime in with whatever music moves you.

Unfortunately this is the only video for Freedom Flight – it’s a bit incongruous –
so just listen to the music…thank you MLK for you courage and peaceful ways
oh, where’s a damn ‘edit’ button when it’s needed:
scrub what I said about it being the incorrect video (Freedom Flight) – I found the correct one (which is posted).
After the fifth consecutive day of snow on the ground, and a morning low of 10 today, I need a sunny day at the beach…followed by one of those…
Influential female singers…
Patsy…
Checking out the new computer speakers and subwoofer I got for Christmas. Nice!
Crazy. I love doing that song for karaoke. Patsy does Willie’s song so very well.
I think the commune is also going to have a monstrous kickass sound system with an awesome library.
Hooda, who waits for karaoke when Crazy is on? I’ve been known to belt it out while food shopping at my local Shop Rite when it’s playing in the store.
Just. Can’t. Help. Myself. Must. Sing. Crazy.
Ahhh, I recognize that Jack Cassidy bass slap. Where’s Jorma?
Never mind, he was in the next frame. Can’t think of any Hot Tuna tunes with a female vocalist.
Whomiss, I try to refrain and save it for the free drinks. Don’t always succeed.
Have to say Patti Smith is one of all time favorites. Etta James is another along with Fiona Apple and Annie Lennox.
Here ya go, guys…
Speaking of the awesome Annie
Hooda, it’s just one of those songs…
That it is, whomiss. I can resist almost anything except singing along with Crazy and dancing to ABBA. The second one is truly embarrassing.
We’d get along well, Hooda. As for dancing with ABBA, live in the leap and with total abandon.
My teenage obsession…
I haven’t heard that one in a while, Raven. One of my favorites of hers.
Every time I hear this song, I’m reminded of driving my 1968 Plymouth Fury III (Sport Coupe) up the NY State Thruway for a weekend of Vermont skiing (and drinking).
No musical tribute to female singers would be complete without this lady.
Joni Mitchell with a few other great musicians… Pat Metheney, Lyle Mays, Jaco Pastorius and Michael Brecker
I was wondering where your were Zooey, then I saw Desperado, one of my mom’s favorite tunes. Thanks for the memory.
How wonderful, Theresa. You are very welcome.
Any excuse to play this one — ladies night!
One of my favorite movie credit tunes…
Another classic.
Love it, Raven. I haven’t heard “Lay Down” in forever.
Yeah, I know she’s nutty, but that voice…
That Linda Ronstadt video is from the period when I had the most monstrous crush on her. I actually turned down the opportunity to meet her after a Portland show because (a) the person introducing me was a part-time stagehand who didn’t actually know her and (b) I knew I’d just stand there gaping and sweating.
I knew I’d just stand there gaping and sweating.
And would do the same today…?
Yes, Zooey. I tend to freeze up–on those rare occasions when I met someone “famous.”
Yer a sweetie, gummitch.
Ohhhh, Billie Holiday. I love her passion.
The average American male over the age of 50 upon meeting Linda Ronstadt would 1)break into a nervous sweat, 2) stare pathetically and 3) either stammer and babble incoherently or blurt out ‘Marry me!’.
tee hee…
When that roller skate song came out, I was rolling around on skates that required a key…
I miss you when you’re gone…
Raven, Melody. A blast from the past…
For gummitch…
Gummitch, start sweating…
Mmmmm, Gaga.
And probably the ultimate love song. If this one don’t move ya, call the coroner.
Roberta Flack and Melissa Manchester AND Tracy Chapman…wow.
Raven, we must have been hanging out at the same parties.
For Gary…
Oh crap. Guys aren’t supposed to know about those songs or singers. Better fix it.
Hooda, another one of those Shop Rite Crazy songs.
Thank you. Thank You. Thank You.
Zooey, loved the Mummer’s Dance, but you opened the flood gates to bagpipes….
Theresa, I live for my Scots men.
What do you think of this, Theresa? You might want to have something to fan yourself…
I saw Lady Gaga!!!
Aaargh, Moulin Rouge. Must resist.
Heh.
Perhaps Shayne.
I was the guy who would throw the odd LPs into the middle of all that Led Zeppelin.
OK, here we go influential women singers….. where’s Janis Joplin?
Ohhhh, Janis…
And Alanis Morissette, eh?
Another Janis. One of her less popular songs.
Too much Janis…memories…
Zooey, Wow. My ears. The Dawg is uncomfortable.
Let’s go a bit to the south. Florida Keys….
Very nice, Theresa.
Influential women singers….. Natalie Merchant….. well she influenced me that’s for sure
For any Southies …
I am easily drawn to Alannis…. eh?
Not female, but I still like this one
I luvs me some Foo Fighters.
“we were lovers
now we can’t be friends
fascination ends
here we go again …i’m not in love
we are not in love ”
That one hit home, ebb.
We’ll be heading in the opposite direction – thing is- I should have put Paul Gross on my Five List. Besides, “I love a man in a uniform.’
RCMP – love ‘em!
“Naked is a state-of-mind…”
Mary Lou Williams, an often overlooked Jazz great. No vocals on this, but love this piece. She often did an interesting fusion of spiritual music with jazz. While I’m not overly spiritual myself, I do enjoy her take on it.
“I can not help feeling like
I have so much at steak
So I lock myself inside my head
And I just run in place
I’ve been right; I’ve been left
I’ve been wrong; I’ve been left behind
I’ve been up but mostly down”
Listening to that Mary Lou William’s piece brought to mind one of the best gospel singers:
Gary, my oldest brother used to sing Downtown when he was running around the house way back in the late 60′s..
objectification – it was the ’60s (not an excuse, – it was the ’60s)
