gone with the wind

Inspired by zxbe’s excellent collection of macro water drops, I found this downy gem out on the water yesterday.

Elephant Butte Lake, New Mexico. An exceptionally quiet afternoon, accompanied only by scores of western grebes.

Today’s weather calls for winds up to 30 mph, the feathers will soon be plastered to the rocks.

  1. Raven, I love your photos! If we ever thaw out here, I’ve got some ideas I’d like to try based upon the photos you’ve posted here.

These two are great. I love the stillness and the reflectivity of the water. And the way the light really makes down glow is amazing. In the second one, I love that the nose of the boat provides some context and scale.

P.S. Thanks for the mention. :)

  2. zxbe…
Absolutely. Your techniques gave me a few ideas as well. It was hard to get the boat lined up, lean out and try to get the feather in focus. Going out again today, in spite of calling for higher winds. Later…

  3. Astounding!

The ‘stop action’ on the feather is brilliant. Then again it brings about the thought of ‘dancing’…
oh it’s just a fabulous photo.

    (Elephant Butte – gorgeous).

  4. Thanks everyone!
It was a way different day out on the lake today, very windy.
    I’m beat!

  5. Raven,

the top photo should be entered in a contest somewhere. It’s excellent.

  6. Raven……I’d love to get over that way and see my friend Father Peter. he lives along the lake somewhere.

there’s a lot of this beautiful state we’ve not seen yet.
