Countdown host calls out New Mexico Gov for immigration hypocrisy

I’m a big fan of Sam Seder. Nice to see him co-hosting on Countdown.

From Raw Story:

Countdown guest host Sam Seder slammed New Mexico governor Susana Martinez’s hypocritical stance on immigration Friday evening.

Martinez has labeled illegal immigrants “terror threats” in justification for her critical immigrantion comments of demanding proof of citizenship in New Mexico. Despite that stance, the governor admitted this week that her father came to America “without documents,” allowing her to be born as a legal citizen.

His point at the end of this video was rather interesting. He points out Gov. Martinez refers to her grandparents as “arriving without documents”, though when others do it “they’re here illegally”. She is  an ‘anchor-grandbaby’, yet she won her governorship because of her stance AGAINST illegal immigration.

Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about Gov. Martinez:

Susana was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. She moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, in the mid 1980s. Martínez comes from a middle class background. Her father was an amateur boxer who won three straight Golden Gloves titles in the 1950s. He was a deputy sheriff for El Paso County, Texas.

Martínez’s husband, Chuck Franco, has been a law enforcement officer for more than 30 years and served as the Doña Ana County Undersheriff. Susana has one stepson, Carlo, who serves in the United States Navy.

On September 9, 2011, Martinez, who was propelled into office primarily on her stance against illegal immigration, admitted to the public her paternal grandparents immigrated to the country illegally.

Susana graduated as one of the top students in her class at Riverside High School of El Paso, Texas in 1977. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1980 and later earned her law degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 1982.

Double standards. Utter hypocrisy. I’m sick of it.

  1. Wiki Info on Governor Martinez (in very small print in her personal details)
    Political party: Republican Party (1995–present)
Other political affiliations: Democratic Party (Before 1995)

She’s a ‘fair weather politician’. She changed parties when the Congress flipped in ’95, like my Senator, Richard Shelby, to stay on the side in power!

  2. .
Her Grandparents worked hard so she could have a hard-heart?! That’s a way to make them proud/ The shame of it all ~ it’s now understandable why she chose to go Repugnant Party (Gov. Martinez why have you no empathy)

  3. Explain to me how it is an Illegal Immigrant be it a Mexican, Asian, Middle Eastern or any Nationality whom is NOT a LEGAL AMERICAN CITIZAN being entitled to the safety of our AMEICAN CONSTUTIONAL RIGHT’S? If they are entitled the SAFETY AND RIGHT’S of the Constitution and are ILLEGAL WHY IS IT THAT THEY DON’T HAVE TO FOLLOW ALL THE OTHER ENTITLED LEGAL AMERICAN RULES example; PAY TAX’S, HAVE TO REPORT THERE EARNED INCOME, CAN’T RECIEVE FEDERAL ASSISTANCE WHEN 30 OF THEM LIVE IN ONE HOME AND RECIEVE BIG $ MONTHLY FOR ASSISTANCE WITHOUT REPORTING HOW MUCH $ THEY REALLY MAKE! THE GRIPE FOR ME IS THE GOVERNER WAS BARRED BY THE COURT’S FROM MAKING IMMIGRANT’S PROVE THERE LEGAL RESIDENCY STATUS IN ORDER TO KEEP THERE NM ISSUED DRIVER LC BECAUSE IT WAS A VIOLATION OF THERE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT’S!! “REALLY” DEFINE THE JUSTICE IN THAT FOR ME PLEASE? I am just saying my Husband and I are having a very hard time getting WHY and HOW THIS CAN BE?.

    • Gina, I’ll explain it to you. Just for the record, I Am not an American citizen, but I’m trying to point out the universal validity of constitutional rights. Any democratic constitution guarantees the fundamental and unalienable basic human rights for everybody. That’s because we’re civilized people. Being an illegal immigrant, has its downsides. Like: The status of immigration is, you got it, illegal. So reporting for taxes? Not such a good idea, besides, your boss won’t like it. He has violated the law as well. He is, if you will, an illegal employer. By emloying you in the first place and in many cases by paying you below the minimum wage. I suggest, as I suggest to all of those here in Europe, who are asking the same questions, you go live in one home with 30 others and try to thrive on the big $ monthly, just for six months. According to you it must be a blast. To sum it up. Being an illegal immigrant is a choice made by people desperate enough to leave their country and fit enough to take the risk. They are very often the best of their countries, that’s why the US has been so successful, the best were always trying to go to America and not all have been there legally right from the start.

Gina, you obviously have adifferent point of view than many here. We welcome different views, but I would like to make you aware of some rules. Caps are considered shouting, to stress some of your points, please use bold or italics, there is a handy thing called Zoo tools in the sidebar, where you can edit your posts accordingly. As I said we welcome a discussion, I for my part really love it, but the Zoo does not suffer trolling and disruptive commmenting. This said, I welcome you to the Zoo and hope you enjoy what we have to offer.

      • Welcome Gina.

Just to point out a couple of other things.. I grew up in the Central Valley of California, out in the country on a farm. I saw lots of farm laborers who were brought in to work the fields each season. In one instance that i personally witnessed, they were brought up by “coyotes” and crammed into seriously substandard housing (I personally witnessed families crammed into a barn and chicken houses). They were required to pay the person who bought them up in the back of a truck in the middle of the night. They paid a stiff rent for the privilege of sharing that chicken house.. (I found this out by speaking to one of them).

Yes, they do pay taxes actually.. when they buy groceries, clothing, gasoline, etc. Social Security and other deductions are taken out of their pay checks, and as undocumented workers (or those using fake SS cards) they will never benefit from the money taken out in the later stages of their life.

When they come into the emergency rooms they are taken care of. Not an efficient way to administer healthcare, and we all absorb the costs. But, there is a huge proportion of the young adults in this country who also don’t pay for health insurance (actually, it’s not just young adults. There are PLENTY of people in this country who are US citizens, and who no longer can afford to pay for insurance, or health care, and decide to go bare). When something does happen these people also will seek care and they will find it somewhere (more than likely an E.R.) Who pays for that care? We all do. The hospitals absorb that cost and pass it on to us all by raising prices on everything. The cost of health care (and insurance) is skyrocketing.
I firmly believe in a fair, just, and compassionate society. A civilized society. I also believe that single payer is the only answer to fix this terribly unjust, broken, corrupt system. Its the only way to bring these prices down and take care of everyone. It would also make us a better nation for it. I’m not so naive to not realize there are those out there that take advantage of the current system, but you’d be mistaken to only point your finger at “undocumented immigrants” as the source of that problem. That is just mistaken thinking.

I also believe it is long past the time to fix the immigration issue. It is clear that farmers depend on the laborers that come from Mexico each year to work in their fields. It is terrible work these people do, and yet, they are continually demonized. They are blamed. They are the problem. There has to be a just, reasonable solution/answer to this.

  4. nmuse, I beyond understand what you point out to me! Nieve I
am not, maybe a bit prejudice by the Illegal Immigrants I personally have enountered then makes me stereo type them all! As for trying to help me find comfort in the fact they pay tax’s on the grocery items they buy (with AMERICAN FOOD STAMPS) and those with FAKE SS #’s will never be entitled to the benefit’s I have as a BORN and RAISED AMERICAN CITIZEN! As for the Farmers that do take advantage of the Immigrants on the farm should be penalized as such, this is something I need not have pitty on! These Farmers should not be able to get away with this practice just as much as Illegal Immigrants should not be allowed to be here and not do it the LEGAL AMERICAN WAY! I belive that most of the immigrants here in AMERICA should be entitled to the great AMERICAN DREAM but should DREAM and act by the LAW! Thank you for your views.
