The Watering Hole. September 6th, Arctic Oil Sandwich

The melting of Polar Ice makes the Arctic much more accessible than it used to be and with accessibility comes the greed for oil. Some 30% of undiscovered gas reserves and 13% of undiscovered oil are thought to be under the arctic ice. Now the race has begun. The risk, however, is huge:

Any serious oil spill in the ice of the Arctic, the “new frontier” for oil exploration, is likely to be an uncontrollable environmental disaster despoiling vast areas of the world’s most untouched ecosystem, one of the world’s leading polar scientists has told The Independent.

Oil from an undersea leak will not only be very hard to deal with in Arctic conditions, it will interact with the surface sea ice and become absorbed in it, and will be transported by it for as much as 1,000 miles across the ocean, according to Peter Wadhams, Professor of ocean physics at the University of Cambridge. The exploitation of oil reserves has become more and more frantic. Voices calling for getting renewable energy off the ground were ridiculed when oil was relatively easy to be had, now because those voices went unheard we do not have an alternative at the ready.

Watering Hole: September 5, 2011 – The Fighting Spirit

Let us remember what Labor Day represents.  We must stand together because the GOP is determined to destroy labor.  Their goal is to return to the days of lords and serfs.  The wealthy, Republican politicians push religion because religion was used to control the poor, starving serfs and peasants. Karl Marx was correct when he stated that “Religion is the opium of the people.”

A brief history of Unions…

And just how did we go from prosperity to austerity?

Sunday Roast: The Twin Towers in the movies

The World Trade Center was a favorite in films even before it was completed.  It seems film makers went out of their way to include the towers in New York shots, which is understandable, since they were friggin’ awesome looking!

Now, whenever I see them on an old movie or television program, I always feel a little twinge of grief.  If they only knew what was ahead of them…and if only we could warn them somehow…

In the next week, we will see many pictures and film clips of the burning and destroyed WTC, and we should remember that terrible day, but I think we need to remember it when it was whole and awesome.

The tunes aren’t bad either, if you don’t mind a flashback or two.  ;)

This is our daily open thread — what’s on your mind?

the long way home

I’m guessing the replacement sign for the one shot full of holes was too small to fit the posts, so it was screwed on top of the old one. And promptly used again for target practice.

The Poor Man and the Carpenter’s Son

The Poor Man and the Carpenter’s Son

by

Briseadh na Faire

A poor man approached the Son of a Carpenter and asked, “Teacher, how do I get into the Kingdom of Heaven?” The Son answered him, saying “Go, sell all you have, give it to the rich, and follow them, for they will provide for you all the days of your life.”

“Look at the Lillies of the Field. They sow not, nor do they reap, but they are clothed in splendor.” the Son continued.

“But, master, they wear not clothes and appear as God meant them, in their own natural naked beauty,” said the poor man.

“As shall you, should you do as I command” said the Son. “Behold the starving children in drought-stricken regions, they too are clothed as God intended, and they are blessed, for lo, their mothers were forbidden to abort them, even though their breasts were dry and they had no milk to suckle them. God blessed these children with life.”

“But they are starving to death” protested the poor man.

The Son paused for a moment, doodling in the sand with a stick. “It is God’s will.” He said at last. “Look at the Birds of the Air, flying about in all their natural beauty. Though they sow not, God provides in abundance for them to eat. Those that find not enough of that which God provides, perish. And, in perishing, enter God’s Kingdom.”

“So you’re saying” the poor man began, “that if I give all I have to the rich, I should look about for the bounty God has provided, and wander the streets clothed as God created me at birth. And if I do not find enough of God’s bounty, and I perish, I, too, will enter God’s Kingdom?”

The Son smiled. “Now you are beginning to understand the depth and wisdom of God’s Love. For the poor shall enter God’s Kingdom sooner than the rich, who, out of their abundance, are forced to remain in mortal form and suffer in this realm far longer.”

The poor man walked away, his question answered. He chanced upon a rich man walking down the street in splendorous robes.

“Here” said the poor man, removing his clothes, “take these, and these pennies, too. They are all I have in this world. I give them to you freely, and will do whatever you ask.” He stood before the rich man in all his natural beauty.

The rich man looked at the dirty rags and few coins in disgust. “Get away from me!” he commanded.

And so the poor man left, wandering the streets clothed in God’s splendor, rejoicing that he will soon enter God’s Kingdom.

The Watering Hole: September 3 – Taxes

3rd Sept. 1925 : New figures were published by the US Treasury to provide an idea of Income Tax paid against income based on a married man with no dependents. it also includes normal tax and surtax.

Tax Income
$22.50 $4,000
$37.50 $5,000
$57.50 $6,000
$87.50 $7,000
$127.50 $8,000
$167.50 $9,000
$207.50 $10,000
$557.50 $15,000
$1017.50 $20,000
$2317.50 $30,000
$4037.50 $40,000
$14,877.50 $80,000

The tax increased steeply after $100,000 to as high as 40%

3rd September 1929 : The Dow Jones industrial average closed at 381.17, this was the peak of the bull market that had been increasing at a phenomenal rate in the 20′s and only 1 month before the great stock market crash in October 1929 signaling the beginning of the great depression of the thirties.

Will the GOP use these two items to prove that high taxes brought down the market in 1929? The highest tax rate was lowered to 25% in late 1925. Sorta blows that theory.

Try these 1929 statistics:

More than half of all Americans are living below a minimum subsistence level.

Annual per-capita income is $750; for farm people, it is only $273.

Backlog of business inventories grows three times larger than the year before. Public consumption markedly down.

Freight carloads and manufacturing fall.

Automobile sales decline by a third in the nine months before the crash.

Construction down $2 billion since 1926.

Seems like deja vu is coming back all over again.

This is our Open Thread. What are your thoughts on taxes or anything else that comes to mind.

Music Night, September 2, 2011

My sister lived in Paris for about five years in the late 60s–including May ’68–and was part of the Bohemian scene of locals and ex-pats. In the later years, her boyfriend was part of the struggling folkie crowd, trying to scratch out a living with his guitar playing in coffee shops and bars. Another member of the group was beginning to become more successful, reaching out to the French in an attempt to introduce them to part of their past. In the intervening years, he has become more than successful, he’s an icon in world music.

The Watering Hole: September 2, 2011 — Sylvia Beach Hotel

This is the parlor of the Sylvia Beach Hotel in Newport, Oregon.  On the left is the small kitchen where I make myself Earl Grey tea, and sometimes linger over a jigsaw puzzle on the table.  There are windows across the front of the building on the right — that’s why the chairs all face that way.  I’ve spent many an hour sitting in those chairs thinking I would read more than I actually did. Mostly, I just stared out the windows, mesmerized by the waves below, while achieving total relaxation.  This is where I fell in love with the Oregon Coast.

You know that feeling when you think you know where your life is going, but then it turns out that it’s totally not happening?  Yeah, me too.  Sometimes you just have to go in a completely different direction, and that’s when I had the brilliant idea of packing up my stuff and moving to the place I love.

So that’s what I’m doing on Monday — leaving Idaho and moving to the Oregon Coast.  It’s a gift to myself…just cuz.

This is our daily open thread — what kind of nice things have you done for yourself?

Looks like a gigantic oil slick to me..

This video was taken two days ago by OnWingsOfCare.org founder and pilot Dr. Bonny Schumaker near the area of the original Deepwater Horizon spill..

From Raw Story:

A California nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of wildlife has discovered what seems to be a massive oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico near the area of the original Deepwater Horizon spill.

In a flight over the Gulf Tuesday, OnWingsOfCare.org founder and pilot Dr. Bonny Schumakerspotted an oil slick that stretched for nearly 10 miles.

Last week, two Louisiana State University men took a boat into the Gulf and returned with video evidence of large blooms of crude oil swelling up to the water’s surface where the doomed oil rig once hovered.

BP had firmly denied that the well is continuing to leak.

“None of this is true,” they said in a statement.

Yeah. Right…
Why isn’t this being reported on in the MSM? Why isn’t it on the news??

The Watering Hole: Thursday, September 1, 2011: “Rick Perry wants to get all up in your uterus and take a picture.”

From Raw Story:

Filling in on the Rachel Maddow Show on Tuesday night, Tulane professor and MSNBC commentator Melissa Harris-Perry took Texas Governor and GOP Presidential candidate Rick Perry to task for supporting “government so small that you don’t even notice it” on the one hand and the inconsistency of supporting the Texas sonogram law on the other.

Harris-Perry said that Gov. Perry “wants the government to be so small that it doesn’t provide a social safety net, that it doesn’t support you when you grow old and retire and need health care. That’s big government and he wants to set us free from those shackles …So, Rick Perry’s version of small government conservativism means government so small it’s not there to help you.”

“Rick Perry wants to make the government so small you don’t event notice it …unless you’re a lady. In which case, Rick Perry wants to make the government so big that it can control the pregnancy of any given woman in Texas. On nearly every other issue, Rick Perry wants government to be practically non-existent. He wants government to be nowhere near you as a citizen. Not even if you want it or need it. But on this one issue, on the issue of abortion, he wants government to be right there with you. Handing your doctor a script, whispering in your ear, that you should be ashamed of yourself. Rick Perry wants to get all up in your uterus and take a picture.”

The Texas sonogram bill requires women to get a sonogram at least 24 hours before getting an abortion. It also requires doctors to describe the fetus to the woman. Critics of the Texas sonogram law, as Raw Storyreported in March, say “the bill is really about shaming women into deciding against terminating a pregnancy.”

The video is from MSNBC, The Rachel Maddow Show. This episode, being hosted by Melissa Harris-Perry, can be viewed here.

So… What do you think? What is it about the GOP that wants SMALL government when it comes to programs that help American citizens, and creating a social safety net for the most vulnerable citizens among us, but BIG government when it comes to what you do in your bedroom, and what you discuss with your doctor. What IS that?? Is that the role of government?

This is our Open Thread.  What do you think?  Speak Up!

What Questions Would YOU Like To Ask Dick Cheney..?

The ‘Dick’ Cheney is on his book tour, making the rounds of all the news channels, hawking his perverted, revisionist version of history. I have no intention of buying his book, but I can’t help wondering.. If YOU were a journalist or reporter with access, what questions would YOU like to ask him (regardless of whether he would answer it honestly or not beings he doesn’t have an honest bone in his decrepid body..)?

Think hard. So much material to cover, so little bandwidth.. The Huffington Post asked this question before me, but I wanted to ask it here anyway.
