The Watering Hole: January 21 – Foot in Mouth Syndrome

Newt Gingrich should consider Mitt Romney a priceless member of his campaign staff. From one of Newt’s sites:

If you want to see more, look here.

Mitt should be a lifetime recipient of the Foot in Mouth Award. If Mitt could only keep his mouth shut, he could easily become the GOP nominee for POTUS in the 2012 Election.

As it stands, should Mitt win the primary, Barack Obama has more than enough material for the Fall!

Mitt, the gift that keeps on giving.

This is your Open Thread. Who do you think will win in SC today? Why? If I were employed, I would start an office pool.

  1. Oy vey. It is way too early to think. Especially regarding this joker. Are you east coasters & Midwesterners up and alive yet?

  2. In response to a wonderful conversation with Raven on his post from yesterday (and I get into more geeky detail there).

A shot from my trip up north this past Christmas, using a technique called HDR. It’s a fun process that can bring out a wider range of intensity in shot. It’s often used to create a more surrealistic looking shot (as I’ve done here); although it can also be used to create a more natural looking shot where details in shaded and brightly-lit areas are more visible (like they are with the naked eye) than they normally appear in a photographic shot.

    Enjoy.

    • Nice! Plus, the scene looked immediately familiar, one I think I last visited when I was in high school back in the late fifties. If I have it placed properly, back then one had to cross the Duluth ‘Lift Bridge’, a black steel trussed bridge the roadway of which lifted way the hell up there to allow large ship traffic into and out of the harbor. Is that bridge still there? Or has it been replaced by a newer conveyance? Or maybe my memory isn’t as good as I think it is and the photo is from a place in Duluth I’ve never visited!

  3. Romney is so out of touch with average Americans. He is an elitist. It’s fun watching the two candidates with the greatest sense of self-importance having a go at each other. So Mitt doesn’t want to release his tax records because…. he pays less than working Americans and he doesn’t want the voters to know this. The very fact that he is resistant to releasing these records makes people suspicious. Romney makes Bush look like a genius.

    • Mittens doesn’t want to release his tax returns now because it would be a gift to Democrats. Instead, he wants to wait until he is the Republican Candidate for President of the United States before giving the Democrats such a gift.

Question, why doesn’t he want his fellow Republicans to receive this “gift” until after it is too late for them to change their minds about him? Isn’t that the ultimate gift to Democrats, to lock Republicans into supporting a candidate who can be totally blown out of the general election once he releases his tax returns?

      • Well said BnF and great point. Republicans should really be angry at him. That will be fun to watch.

      • If I may…

The GOP doesn’t want Mittens to release his tax returns either because it would help explode the myth that the rich are already taxed too much.

    • If Romnoid becomes the nominee, the Dems should put together an ad with a mashup of Romney’s (“real streets” “I’m not rich” “I’ve worried about pink slips”) horseshit with pictures of his homes.

      • I think it was Ed Schultz that did just that last night. Started with Romney’s proclamation that he’s lived “on American streets” after which Ed showed pix of his four homes plus his ski “cabin” in Utah.

      • or “I’ve worried about pink slips” juxtaposed with a Victoria’s Secret model…

  4. A note from me, personally, and not necessarily reflective of The Zoo:

To our readers in South Carolina:

    VOTE HERMAN CAIN!
    ;)

    • Herman Cain was on some show I can’t remember and he keeps forgetting he’s not running any more. What a moron. Colbert has him completely confused.

  5. Mitt Romney actually believes the rich are different and doesn’t believe peons have the right to question him on anything. My guess is he won’t even take suggestion from his advisors because they’re too poor to bother with and his rich cronies agree with him.

  6. Depending on the (religious) make-up Neuter wins SC.

(fundies are an odd lot though. Will they see beyond Willard’s “not a christian religion” to vote the candidate or pass over his name all together. We’ll know soon enough)

    • The truly odd part is they seem to be torn between a Mormon and 2 Catholics. That has to make them crazy.

      • Santorum is definitely out: too Catholic!
Neut, if I recall, was a Baptist a/o Lutheran before he fell in with the Catholic crowd. The fundies will consider him a Baptist and cast a vote for the smug arse!

        • Religion (not to be confused with spirituality) is in reality just a means of controlling the masses, a tool for the sheep herders.
These fundy clowns will adopt any religion which presents an opportunity to control. They want to be the leaders, yet flounder around trying to second guess what the sheep want, just to get the votes. Newt is simply a nasty person, Romnoid is a moneychanger in the temple, and Santorum likes to lash the sinners.

  7. Speaking of religion:

Sanitarium really doesn’t know anything about anything. I sure would enjoy it if someone would ask him how he justifies the slavery and genocide promoted by his god but I just don’t see anyone in the “librul media” displaying that much integrity. I’ll be sorry when he drops out because, frankly, none of the other three are funny.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/21/rick-santorum-equality-islam-religion-south-carolina_n_1220767.html

    • I caught this on the radio. Some of those turkles swim all the way from Indonesia and they don’t come over here to lay eggs. Amazing.

  8. QOTD:

“Let [Romney] make this challenge: ‘I’ll release my tax returns when Barack Obama releases his college transcripts and the copy of his admission records to show whether he got any loans as a foreign student. When he releases that, talk to me about my tax returns,’” – Mike Huckabee.

Foreign student? Will Fox correct … never mind … I forgot they aren’t “actual journalists.”

    • Ummmm, beside the “foreign student” bullshit, Obama isn’t asking to see Romney’s tax return.

Phukabee knows his listeners are “good” fundygelicals who would never question what he says — so he can lie like a damn dog.

  9. QOTD II:

“Order a hit on a president in order to preserve Israel’s existence. Think about it. If I have thought of this Tom Clancy-type scenario, don’t you think that this almost unfathomable idea has been discussed in Israel’s most inner circles? Another way of putting “three” in perspective goes something like this: How far would you go to save a nation comprised of seven million lives … Jews, Christians and Arabs alike? You have got to believe, like I do, that all options are on the table,” – Andrew Adler, publisher of the Atlanta Jewish Times. He has now apologized. Pffffft.

  10. Having been a slacker all week, I’ll be spending time on my sewing projects today.

I’ll check in now and then to read everyone’s brilliance. :)

  11. Do we live blog? Pretty please? For once I have the time to do it. I have even a nice candidate I support:

  12. I predict the vile ol’ Newt will win the primary, primarily because it’s South Carolina.
Fundies do not like mormons. I’ve seen on diss his childrens’ Sunday school teacher by removing them because the man dared to suggest that a well respected local doctor who was mormon was “a good person”.
If Israel attempts a “hit” on our president, I think we’ve got to nuke ‘em, or at least invade. It’s the patriotic thing to do.

    • Outstanding how’s the recovery?

Israel would be using our money to go after our President – what a concept//

      • I’ve had a few setbacks, mostly because I can’t sleep, therapy is hard, and my lovely well intentioned friends keep totally disarranging my house. Also, my husband has orchitis, which has rendered him incapable of restoring our one bathroom demolished before he sickened, so I have to navigate giant holes in the floor in order to pee. So, I’d say things are about normal, thanks for asking. :)

  13. Terry Dolan, a singer-songwriter whose band, Terry and the Pirates, boasted an all-star lineup in the 1970s and ’80s that included Rolling Stones’ keyboardist Nicky Hopkins and Quicksilver Messenger Service guitarist John Cipollina, died Jan. 15 at his home in Novato. He was 68.

Terry & The Pirates – All Worth the Price You Pay

Terry & the Pirates – Silverado Trail

    • Oh, well, shit. Damn. I’d heard of him back in the day, but it was only a few years back that I stumbled on a 2-disc release of live performances and it remains one of my absolute favorite rock and roll albums. For one thing, it features Cipollina, who remains at the top of my list of great and distinctive guitar players–I can always recognize him in a mix, just as I can Richard Thompson.

Terry and the Pirates was actually a pick-up band with a constantly shifting lineup. And as I poke at this I remember now that I found that CD while fruitlessly searching for recordings by Country Weather, a band that was always playing somewhere in California (including several visits to Modesto) but never broke into the big time. Various members of that band were regulars in the Pirates.

    • Whoa..
the man is none too bright if he truly thought the doctors would pull a “joke on him” with the x-ray.
      Glad it turned out ok.

(did you catch the name of the hospital? “Advocate Christ medical centre…”) This being Oklahoma – it had to be a “miracle”//

    • Well, those people are all union thugs, d’oh. Of course they are making huge bloated salaries — not a coincidence that these people are all in the public sector.

  14. oh dear gawd. These people are out of their minds.

“Oklahoma Republicans Introduce Bill That Prohibits The Consumption Of Human Fetuses, Would Ban Stem Cell Research

Republicans introduced the bill after a Christian Right anti-abortion group claimed that several major food companies are using embryonic stem cells to enhance the flavor of their products. The allegations never got off the ground and the accused companies have flatly denied doing such a thing. That’s because it’s not only unethical to use stem cells in such a manner, it’s also illegal under US law (and disgusting)..”

    • Soylent Green is people…and only in the movies, too. Ebb, these people cannot be taken seriously.

      • Meanwhile, I’m quite sure that Ron Paul, if not the other surviving candidates, would be all in favor of turning the poor and the sick into Soylent Green.

    • Mittens is unraveling as we type..his “I’m just an average joe doing average things just like you” persona wasn’t going to work.

    • I don’t know if anything I’ve seen from the “values voters” displays more hypocrisy, bigotry, and idiocy than their support for, the deeply corrupt, Newt. I’m no fan of Mittens but I haven’t seen any proof that he’s a philanderer and to the best of our knowledge he has never had to shell out $300,000.00 to avoid criminal prosecution. His financial dealings may be distasteful to many “lefties” but I’m forced to conclude that, when the time comes, the fundies just won’t vote for a Mormon even if everything else about him fits their vision of a perfect Republican candidate.

  15. Well, it looks like things are plugging away nicely around here.

Anyone have any extra human embryos? I’m feeling a bit peckish. :D

  16. I’ll be back in a bit for the SC primary results.

I think Newt might squeak out a win today, but my dearest wish is for Romney to inch over him. Romney gloating is bad enough, but Newt gloating? The worst.

    • I find myself wishing, more and more, that Newt wins the nomination. Mittens is such a chameleon that he could fool a lot of people who don’t really follow politics. Newt, on the other hand, is just such a slime ball that he can’t help but exhibit his true colors. He would even cause casual voters to show up at the polls just to vote against him.

      • After all the Neutered one is from the same state as this cuckoo

Georgia Judge Orders President Obama To Appear In Court To Defend Citizenship

..A judge in Atlanta, Georgia has ordered President Obama to show up at a hearing concerning a complaint filed by a citizen of the state who contends that Mr. Obama is not a natural-born citizen and therefore should be removed from the ballot in the Georgia Presidential primary.

(Apologies if this was previously posted)

        • Talk about “activist judges”. Sometimes I just wish that President Obama would send a half-dozen masked and heavily armed Secret Service agents to visit these creeps in their bedrooms at around three in the morning. Just for a friendly chat.

I know that the “librul media” would object but the thought of these freaks gibbering in terror makes me smile.

        • Ok, so a local judge in Georgia orders the President of the United States to appear in his courtroom.

How is this any different than the witch hunt against President Clinton? As I recall, the Supreme Court said litigation in a local court could proceed against a sitting President in the Paula Jones case. After all, what could be the harm in that?

          shrug.

The plaintiff wants to keep Obama off the Georgia ballot. Any guess as to how the local judge will rule?

      • Pete, I think Romney is the establishment candidate for a reason, as was Hillary in 2008. The didn’t get their wish last time, but Obama was still enough of a centrist to not be a real danger. And, they had both houses in their bag. It was, ironically, the tea party which brought in fresh blood much to the chagrin of the GOP establishment who would have preferred to have the old way and do their deals in quiet. It would have panned out with Hillary, she is an insider. Obama’s presidency fanned the intrinsic racism in parts of the GOP and he was not trusted by the Democratic establishment either which weakened him, so the tea party shook things up quite a bit by being serious about what for the GOP establishment was only lip service to appease the electorate. Hence the obstructionism that ultimately and ironically is damaging for the Republicans more than for Obama. Now the establishment wants to go back to the old days and therefore they back Romney. But still, as with the sorcerer’s apprentice, they can’t get rid of the ghosts they summoned. Now they may get their pet candidate fatally damaged by one or two of their own. Serves them right. If Romney can’t clinch SC and it sure doesn’t look like he can, and if Santorum bows out he race will go beyond Florida and possibly with added momentum for Gingrich. Romney will cement his aura of the “unwanted candidate” and remain a symbol for the disconnect between the GOP establishment and their own electorate.

        • Santorum is backed by ‘evangelicals’. If he bows out, who’ll the Tea Party look to? Paul? Palin?

        • The weird part is that Mittens’ best qualities; a past willingness to work with Democrats and reach compromises, is the kiss of death with the freaks who make up the “base”. The jury is still out over whether he can cement support even assuming he wins the nomination. Frankly, aside from appointing movement conservatives to the bench, he might not be a disaster should he win the election. Stick with me here…

Although it seems counter intuitive, it possible that the best outcome would be for the Dems to win back the House, cement their majority in the Senate, and lose the White House to Mittens. Although the obstruction of Obama is unprecedented it’s still in line with recent history. When the Dems have held the White House the GOP devotes all their energy to thwarting whichever Dem holds the office for the good of their cronies and party. On the other hand, Congressional Dems have a history of working with GOP presidents for the good of the country.

Mittens’ history as a “flip flopper” is actually indicative that, if he wins, he can be persuaded by events and reason. I think that’s what’s holding back the unqualified support even from the establishment. Newt would be an unqualified disaster. He would dedicate his presidency (spit!) to completing the destruction he started as Speaker. There’s a very good reason that he has been called the “Godfather of gridlock”. He, as much as anyone, bears a lot of the responsibility for the open hostilities we see between the parties. He’s a nasty, nasty, man who would gladly immolate the entire world to settle a grudge.

  17. MSNBC’s SC primary coverage show starts now, with one hour remaining until the polls close.

Current’s show starts in thirty minutes.

  18. Speaking of money and elections, just how much money is spent on the whole electing of a president? All these primaries and the real election race hasn’t even begun in earnest. Buttons, halls, ballots, organizing. Sure, lots is done by volunteers but still, lots of money.

  19. Daily Kos ‘Best Ever Hate Mail’ Apalooza.

    My personal favorite:

Its clear that Obama is a nazi. Libtards don’t want to believe this because they are all bout the personality cult. So, lets review some historical FACTS and compare Hitler and Obama:

    1. Both Obama and Hitler massively raised taxes.
    2. Both Obama and Hitler hated jews and liked muslims.
    3. Both Obama and Hitler increased government spending via “stimulus” programs, like building roads.
    4. Both Obama and Hitler nationalized the automobile industry (Hitler with WolksWagen, Obama with GM and Chrysler)
    5. Both Obama and Hitler attacked Africa.
    6. Both Obama and Hitler were close allies of Japan.
    7. Both Obama and Hitler ignored tried to silence dissent (Hitler with Gestapo, Obama with his attempts to shut down FoxNews and Rush Limbaugh)
    8. Both Obama and Hitler are environmentalist fanatics.
    9. Both Obama and Hitler were anti-smoking fanatics.
    10. Both Obama and Hitler are hostile to uncooperative Christians.
    11. Both Obama and Hitler have tried to circumvent national laws (Hitler when he made himself dictator, Obama when he attacked Libya without permission and now that he tries to illegally raise the debt ceiling without congressional approval)
    12. Both Obama and Hitler love propaganda.
    13. Neitjer Obama nor Hitler were actually born in the country they took over (Obama Kenya, Hitler Austria)
    14. Both Obama and Hitler endangered their countries because they wanted to appease rather than attack their enemies (Hitler with USA, UK and Soviet Union, Obama with Iran, Venezuela, North Korea and Islam)
    15. Both Obama and Hitler are obsessed with race.
    16. Both Obama and Hitler have a personality cult.
    17. Both Obama and Hitler are crappy leaders who make a shitload of speeches.
    18. Both Obama and Hitler relied on technical gimmicks when fighting wars (Hitler with U-boats and V-rockets, Obama with his predator-drones).
    19. Both Obama and Hitler are fans of the surveillance state.
    20. Both Obama and Hitler have corrupted the justice system by stacking the courts with leftist activist judges.

    so that’s 20/20 or 100% -> Obama = Hitler

Basically liberalism id just a sanitized version of nazism. Makes you think

    • “Basically liberalism id just a sanitized version of nazism. Makes you think”

Revealing Freudism there.. this guys id hasn’t ever seen the light of day.

    • Frugal, this must have come from a stout historian, one like Gingrich. I am not going to comment to the specific points, it’s moot.

    • I’m tempted to say that this one is a “Poe”. I find it hard to believe that anyone who could count to twenty would really be able to believe so many things that are the opposite of true. Although I suppose it is possible that it’s a person with a functional IQ who is also barking mad.

  20. Who’s reading CNN.com?

    CNN Quick vote
Which GOP candidate do you want to win the presidential nomination?

    Paul
    33%
    71901

    Romney
    32%
    67970

    Gingrich
    22%
    47873

    Santorum
    13%
    27585

    • I can’t say I’m surprised. It’s very common for people who work to such an old age to rapidly decline after leaving their job, even if the end isn’t as traumatic as it was for Joe Pa. The will to live is tied to their work.

  21. Remembering that the Republican voters in S.C. today (men and women both) likely look and act a lot like Nooters.
Blotchy, blobby, pasty white; arrogant, loud and praying for slavery to be re-instituted.

  22. I’ve read some sites where SC voters weighed in and some people said thete were many who were voting for Gingrich, hoping to watch him get smeared in the general election.

What’s in the water down there?

  23. I can’t shake the feeling that South Carolina is so different than the rest of the country. “You Lie,” pride in treason, hit pieces using John McCain’s children, etc–these are things that play well there. Surely, the rest of the country is more like Iowa and New Hampshire (where Newt placed fourth), than SC. Right?

The South doesn’t vote again until Super Tuesday, March 6th. Nine states take the stage in between. Sure, Romney could lose, but let a little time pass after this SC politico blood frenzy, and I think Newt ends up a footnote in the Romney nomination story. Right?

    Gingrich. Really?

    • The South doesn’t vote again until Super Tuesday, March 6th.

      After Florida in ten days.

Let Gingrich think he has a chance. When it all slips away, he’ll trash Romney even worse than he already has.

    • I think I’m correct in believing SC has a large population of African Americans, and I don’t think too many of them are involved in today’s proceedings. Maybe Herman and a couple others.

      • They certainly are not Repugs. And that state has attempted to make it difficult for the poor and minority populations to vote. Since it is a fact that those groups vote Democratic.

    • Bmm, I wonder. If Romney loses the inevitability factor he has nothing to go with. As Andy Borowitz just said: ” in a desperate move Romney has changed his name from Mitt to Not”

    • None of the three states that have voted (kinda sorta) are particularly “normal.” Two tiny Snow White states and one of the most shit-kicking messed-up states in the country. It’s totally bizarre that these three and Florida(?) will largely determine the Republican nominee.

  24. SRSLY……

Gingrich wins among married women. I didn’t make that up. And he beats Romney 48 – 39 on electability. Mitt’s melting.

    SC IS crazy.

  25. Interesting snapshot at TPM: Mittens 38% and Grinch 33%, but there is a checkmark next to Newter’s name and multiple articles proclaiming he won. Have the polls actually closed?

  26. Nate Silver says not to rush to judgement in SC. Double-digit poll leads have evaporated before.

  27. Romney won only 22 percent of evangelicals. He can’t win the nomination for a Christianist party.

Romney has a class problem. He only won among those earning over $200,000 a year. “Not very much”, of course, for Romney. But very wealthy for most everyone else.

  28. Fox is calling third place for Santorum over Ron Paul. I hope that goes the other way.

  29. Just got in…

So why is there a big green check mark next to Newt’s name on TPM, when he only has 31% and Romney has almost 40%?

  30. When a cows horns are cut off, it’s called polling.
As in, 90% percent of all exiting polled Herefords had no clue as to what just happened.

  31. Tweet of the Night:

“Given what South Carolina did tonight to keep a black man in office, I think they’ve atoned for any previous racism.”

  32. Gingrich is on Meet the Press and Face the Nation in the morning. Chris Christie is also on MtP to shill for Romney. Santorum is on This Week. Romney is only risking appearing on Fox News Sunday.

  33. Newt is regarded by the South Carolinians as the best man to defeat Obama in the fall – based on the debates, mainly. There is a problem with this, as Andrew Romano explains:

“The problem is that a general-election campaign isn’t just two candidates debating each other to death, a fantasy that a lot of Gingrich voters seem to be clinging to and that Newt seems eager to encourage, what with his incessant chatter about challenging Obama to seven Lincoln-Douglas-style confrontations. A general election is turnout and field and registration and microtargeting and data-mining and fundraising and message control and so on. You know, the stuff that both Romney and Obama do well. The traditional stuff. … Nontraditional may win debates. Traditional wins elections.”

    • Newt is regarded by the South Carolinians as the best man to defeat Obama in the fall – based on the debates, mainly.

They’re used to Fox News, Gingrich is just a good visual that spares them reading he newspaper if they even can read.

  34. On Countdown, Bill Press just called Gingrich a ‘suicide bomber’ politically.

I’d go one further and call him a ‘serial suicide bomber’.

  35. Heh…

    • At some point, people will have to ask themselves, has Newt ever kept any oath or promise he’s ever made, before considering letting him take the oath of office as President.

  36. Mormonism was one reason Romney lost South Carolina. Exit polls show that most South Carolina voters wanted a candidate that shared similar religious views. Romney lost big among those voters.

        • You said it. “Insanity”. Any sane person with a little education and an IQ above room temp knows that religion and politics have killed more people than smallpox. Theocracy ends badly for everyone every time.

    • From TPM:

According to the exit polls, Mitt Romney lost all income levels with the exception of those making over $200,000 a year.

      Red flag, Mittens, red flag!

  37. Mitt and his PACS have invested another 2 m $$ in a defeat. Hmmm. Gingrich’s victory came at a bargain. 1 m

  38. In a state where African-Americans make up 28 percent of the electorate and 1 percent of the voters in the primary today. But what an indictment of a party that in a diverse state, 99 percent of the voters were white.

    • I think that the percentage of African Americans who vote Republican is now lower than the percentage who suffer from debilitating mental illness. Plus, in the South, the memories of getting beaten for showing up at the polls hasn’t dimmed.

  39. I can watch Gingrich gloat in his victory speech, knowing how hard he’s inevitably going to fall later.

  40. Keep in mind, Mitt will be in it for the LONG haul and Newt isn’t even on the Virginia ballot.

    • And mitt wiil alter his strategy according to twitter

Romney to try new strategy in Florida. Will gain weight and sleep with other women.
      vor 9 Minuten

    • I admit I would like Gingrich to win Florida and then see the GOP mullahs panic and scurry like roaches when the light is lit.

  41. Based on Ron Paul’s increase over last election, If he keeps running, he’ll win the SC primary when he’s 90.

      • He’ll fall right in with papa’s 12-14%.

‘Steady growth’. Like I said, he’ll win when he’s 90 if he keeps running…

  42. Right now, Gingrich is leading by 15%. If that margin holds, this is bigger than the pundits expected.

  43. Jeb Bush to endorse Romney before the FL primary.

If Palin endorses him (even though she’s already sorta kinda endorsed Newt), he should view it as a kiss of death.

  44. Wanna know just how stupid GOoPers are? Cain, Huntsman, Perry, and Bachmann are getting votes. I guess that dreams really die hard when one lives in a fantasy world.

    • TPM, with 40% reporting, has Perry lower than Cain! Do you suppose those voters are so uninformed they don’t know both have dropped out?

      • I would go with insanity or stupidity over uniformed. Generally, those who bother to vote in primaries have some knowledge of current events. The people voting for the ones who have dropped out are just committed to denying reality. They probably set out cookies and milk next to the fireplace just in case tonight’s the night that Jesus comes down the chimney.

  45. Me tired, must go sleep. It has been good to be around for a bit again. Enjoy yourselves and then have a good night!

  46. Why hasn’t Mittens denounced his Mormon faith? We all know that he doesn’t have any character. I wonder if he would lose some of his inherited fortune if he became a “real Christian”.

    • I suspect that he got special dispensation from the church to say what he needs to to win the election. I read about his earlier election vs. Ted Kennedy and his pro-stance on abortion that alluded to the fact that the church was aware that he needed to do that in order to attempt to win.

  47. Countdown is running ads during Scrotorum’s speech. Keith even pointed out that they were doing it twice in the same speech! :D

      • Olbermann mentioned it.

        Bear Bryant’s last game coached – December 29, 1982, Died January 26, 1983. Bryant was 69.

        Joe Paterno’s last game coached – October 29, 2011 Died January 21, 2012. Paterno was 85.

They weren’t meant to be here and not be coaching football, were they?

    • Wow, that was quick. He must have been sicker than they revealed, or the stress aggravated the situation.

      Condolences to the family.

  48. The jokes begin…..tweeted:

RT @LOLGP: OVERHEARD AT THE NEWT VICTORY PARTY: What’s with the bowl full of keys

  49. From TPM:

“Mitt Romney’s nasty, negative. derisive campaign threw everything they had at Newt Gingrich this week and it didn’t work,” Bossie told TPM. “They need to consider whether they’re harming the eventual nominee as they’re making these attacks.”

There’s almost too much to love in that quote. From, incidentally, someone at Citizens United.

  50. More Tweet fun…

    • Three sources are telling CNN tonight that Jeb will in fact endorse Mitt sometime soon.

    • Her source was Mark Silva of Bloomberg News, who she said got it direct from Jeb.

  51. Ummmm..A spokesperson for the Paterno family has denied a report by CBS that former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno has died.

    • Somebody on Twitter must have tried to be the first to say it. He was taken off the respirator this morning.

  52. Wow, I thought Newt might beat Mittens by 4 or 5 points, but Newt is kicking his ass by about 13% right now.

Owie owie OW! No wonder Mittens was crying…

  53. Are the Repugnant ones, in FL, deeply fundie? If not – Romney will take it.
Neutered one will trip over his clown shoes then wonder what happened.
    (I can dream)

    • Different crowd altogether in Florida, and more likely to respond to Mittens. He’s got a substantial lead in the polls right now, but he was favored to win SC as well.

If things really tighten up, I count on Newter to demonstrate to the public what a vile, nasty little shit he really is. I can’t wait.

      • Exactly. It’s like it was stated in the old Star Trek with the parallel universe where Spock had a beard. It’s relatively easy for a civilized man to act like a savage but nearly impossible for a savage to act like a civilized man.

  54. Newt the history teacher thinks he knows more about engineering than the engineers. If it took eight years to study a project, it’s because a Republican gutted the budget!

    • Newt couldn’t tie his shoes without instructions.
He’s so damn full of himself — thinks he truly has relevance..

      • The core of the speech: Gingrich is fighting the “elites” who for 35 years have been trying to turn America into something else. This is a former Speaker of the House, and a creature of Washington DC feeding from the trough. And he still sees himself as an outsider. A.maz.ing.

          • A Gingrich nomination would be poetic justice – or maybe just justice. Gingrich didn’t devolve the GOP alone, but he is arguably more responsible than any one person for the Republican party becoming the cynical, reckless, destructive piece of shit it is now. I was not a fan of Reagan, but there is a big difference – as Newt would say a “fundamental” difference – between the party of Reagan and the one Newt was so instrumental in shaping, the current, decadent GOP.

The Republican Party of today is the party of Newt. I think the best bet for reforming it is for Republican grassroots to nominate someone who so thoroughly exemplifies it, and have him lose spectacularly. It would also be cathartic for the country if Obama finally grasped the moment and took the opportunity to definitively crush, rhetorically as well as electorally, Gingrichism and its variants.

That’s the change I’m waiting for.

          • I’m not so sure. First of all, he’s immoral. He knows the difference between right and wrong and chooses wrong most of the time. I also don’t see him being able to con as many casual voters as Mittens.

  55. The Obama-Is-An-Alien line: “we will run an American campaign, not a Republican one.” All the Republican candidates are Americans. But the elites are not. Key phrase: “Think of how radical Obama would be in his second term.”

Then the condescension toward this “absurdity” of this president. And the TelePrompter gag. Do these people really buy into the idea that Obama is unable to articulate himself?

  56. Olbermann signed off and I switched back to MSNBC. Rachel and the cool kids have left to party, and Tweety and Chuck Todd are analyzing the results with Mikey Steele.

  57. I have not bought any of Obama’s books, but did he ever once cite Saul AuIinsky Alinsky (I’ll learn to spell it right one of these days) as an influence on him? And how many times did Newt use the word “elite” followed by trying to take credit for things that happened while he was the third most powerful person in the country?

    • The core McCarthyite theme: American exceptionalism versus the Saul Alinsky radicalism. “We” are Americans. Obama is a traditional America-hater.

    • All the Reichwhiners have are “scary words” and bogeymen. Neither their goals nor their fears have anything to do with the cause and effect universe we sane people live in.

  58. This is what the GOP now is, and it deserves its spokesman. I don’t underestimate the appeal to some of the idea of humiliating and removing the first black president. That’s what Gingrich is really about. He is giving them what they want. And it’s meat that has barely seen a skillet.
