Uranium has been studied for a century and it is not known to cause cancer or leukemia. Saddam's government, though, apparently realized that many are scientifically challenged and that leukemia is a "hot button" word and that photos of alleged birth defects would woo the world's dedicated, but scientifically illiterate "do gooders". They were right; their propaganda campaign is being carried on at a feverish pitch many years after the Gulf War and 5 years after DU was probably last used in combat. DU is not used in bombs, so it is not used in bombings - it has caused Iraqi tanks to explode, but not because it is an explosive, but because it has no much built up energy that when it hits armor it quickly becomes very hot and that intense heat generated by impact stopping a very heavy hard object travelling near the speed of sound - that generates enormous energy at the point of impact. That energy in the form of intense heat sets off the enemy tank's own ammunition and fuel supplies and those are what explode. The dark black dust is then only found on and within a few meters of the targetted tank and about 70 soldiers were in Bradley Fighting Vehicles that were hit by DU in friendly fired incidents in 2001. Those soldiers have been closely followed by the VA and not a single one of those individuals who had been hit by DU shrapnel died as a result of DU, nor have they had children with birth defects.
