Spanish king tells Chavez to ‘shut up’

It seems Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez doesn’t know when enough is enough.

Chavez triggered the exchange by repeatedly referring to former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar as a “fascist.” Spain’s current socialist prime minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, responded during his own allotted time by urging Chavez to be more diplomatic in his words and respect other leaders despite political differences.

Chavez repeatedly tried to interrupt, but his microphone was off.

Spanish King Juan Carlos, seated next to Zapatero, angrily turned to Chavez and said, “Why don’t you shut up?”

Maybe someone should give Chavez that book on winning friends and influencing people…

Christians Fear Atheist Conspiracy

I received this email today:

A movie to avoid….

We need to get the word out about this movie ………

It is coming out in December – an atheist produced it,
It is marketed for children and in the end they kill God.
Send this to everyone you know.

Read what Snopes has to say about it.

So please do go to Snopes and read what the conspiracy theorists have to say.   John Gibson of Fox News is mentioned having done an interview with Bill Donohue of The Catholic League.

Noted at the end is that books from this series have sold 15 million copies and that this book has won many awards most notably the “Carnegie of Carnegies” from the Carnegies Medal for Children’s Literature ranking it the best children’s book in the last 70 years.

An Open Letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Dear Speaker Pelosi,

It is my understanding, from an interview conducted with Rep Debbie Wasserman Schultz, that you would prefer that the Democrats in Congress spend no time impeaching, trying, convicting, and removing from office, Vice President Richard B. Cheney (nor President George W. Bush, for that matter). You would prefer, instead, that they focus on obtaining a bigger majority in the House and a Democrat in the White House in the 2008 elections. I would remind you, Madame Speaker, that the 2008 elections are still twelve months away, and the expiration of their terms of office another two-and-a-half months beyond that. That is more than enough time for them to start a war of choice with Iran. If you do not proceed with impeaching Vice President Cheney, the driving force behind the march to war with Iran, good men and women in our Armed Forces and innocent Iranian civilians alike will die. And you will have to live with the fact that you allowed them to serve out their crime-ridden terms unpunished and undeterred in their destruction of the Constitution you took an oath to support and defend against all enemies “foreign or domestic”. President Bush and Vice President Cheney are two such domestic enemies, and it is your constitutional duty to defend the constitution against them. To prioritize your political party over your nation and your constitution is inexcusable.

Second Court-Martial of Watada May Not Happen

By Christian Hill, The Olympian, via Truthout:

1st Lt. Ehren Watada may not be tried a second time on charges of missing troop movement and conduct unbecoming an officer. A US District Court Judge has imposed a temporary injunction barring the Army from trying Watada again.

Fort Lewis, Washington – 1st Lt. Ehren Watada, the Fort Lewis officer who refused to deploy to Iraq last year, might never see another courtroom.

U.S. District Judge Benjamin Settle on Thursday imposed a preliminary injunction to temporarily bar the Army from trying Watada a second time while saying the officer likely will prevail on the merits of his pending case.

Since his first court-martial ended in mistrial in February, Watada’s lawyers have argued that trying him a second time would violate his Fifth Amendment protection from being tried for the same offense twice. On Oct. 3, as Watada’s appeals in the military court system were being exhausted, his attorneys took the rare step of asking a federal civilian court to step in.

Settle granted Watada’s request for an emergency stay of the second court-martial, scheduled to begin Oct. 9, to allow him time to review the extensive legal arguments presented lawyers representing Watada and the Army. The injunction would be enforced pending the court’s decision on Watada’s claim.

The Army plans on filing written arguments showing a second court-martial wouldn’t violate Watada’s Constitutional rights.

This should be interesting.

Hello from Europe – 436 Days to Go

(Clothesline – legal – Ecomusée, France)

One great, albeit controversial, author has passed away. Norman Mailer has  died at Mount Sinai Hospital early this morning, aged 84.

Lest we forget, in an aptly named article “The Independent” reminds it’s readers, that there is in fact needless dying still going on in Afghanistan, while the warlords reap huge profits from drug trade. To bring Afghan farmers away from opium production Gordon Brown considers subsidizing regular crops .  Renewed Taliban attacks left several Afghan soldiers and six young Americans dead. German soldiers escaped a suicide bombing, one civilian died in the attack.

Chancellor Merkel is meeting with President Bush in Crawford. Angela Merkel is trying hard to avoid any impression, that she is in the “buddy” circle of your President. She is fully content with the “ally” status. Both have stressed a diplomatic solution for Iran.

Will Pakistan fall to the radical Islamists? There is a good chance, says none other than John Bolton, euphemistically labeled “US diplomat”, by the Swiss “Tagesanzeiger”, And who is to blame? In Bolton’s view, George W. Bush ought to support Musharraf more, no matter what, and forget about Democracy.

Meanwhile, Pakistan more and more resembles a “pressure cooker”.

And finally, Bayern Munich got slaughtered by Stuttgart in today’s game. For years now Bayern tries to outbuy other clubs and gatecrash the European elite via the transfer market. Well, they are being brought back to reality.

This is what struck “Europeanview” as noteworthy today.
You all have a good day and take care!

Letter from Kucinich to Judiciary

via: Raw Story:

On Friday, as the embattled legislation is pushed into committee, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) wrote to House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr. (D-MI) in support of H. Res 799, Articles of Impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney.

Text of the letter appears below.

November 9, 2007

The Honorable John Conyers, Jr. Chairman Committee on the Judiciary 2138 Rayburn HOB Washington, DC 20515

Dear Chairman Conyers

I am writing in support of H. Res. 799, the Articles of Impeachment which were referred to the committee relative to the Impeachment of the Vice President of the United States of America.

Recent reports indicate that the Vice President is attempting to shape the National Intelligence Estimate on Iran to conform to his misperceptions about the threat Iran actually poses. Much like his deceptive efforts in the lead up to the Iraq war, the Vice President appears to be manipulating intelligence to conform to his beliefs.

If the reports are true, they add additional weight to the case for impeachment. I believe impeachment remains the only tool Congress has to prevent a war in Iran. This information relates directly to the Article III charges in the resolution. I urge your timely consideration.

Dennis J. Kucinich
Member of Congress

Democratic Judicial Committee Member Schultz on Impeachment!

 Wasserman Schultz, (D) Florida, 20th (202) 225-7931fax 202-225-8456

Debbie Wasserman Schultz, representing the 20th District of Florida, needs to be given some attention. It would seem she has been talking to Pelosi, behind the scenes like Diane Watson told us in her candid town hall meeting. Schultz said, in an interview with Ed Schultz Show, “when what we should be focusing on are… our efforts on expanding the Democratic majority and electing a Democratic President.”

In a previous article I had detailed how Diane Watson had expressed the “real” reason that the House Dems were trying their level best to derail the impeachment proceedings. She claimed that behind the scenes Pelosi was urging the other democrats to defeat the impeachment proceedings in order to use this illegal administration as some kind of ploy to help in the Nov. ‘08 elections to garner more Democratic members and ultimately a Democratic president!
