Rudy can’t seem to get a break. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy..
First, the article by the Politico came out yesterday, right before the Republican CNN/YouTube Debate:
As New York mayor, Rudy Giuliani billed obscure city agencies for tens of thousands of dollars in security expenses amassed during the time when he was beginning an extramarital relationship with future wife Judith Nathan in the Hamptons, according to previously undisclosed government records.
The documents, obtained by Politico under New York’s Freedom of Information Law, show that the mayoral costs had nothing to do with the functions of the little-known city offices that defrayed his tabs, including agencies responsible for regulating loft apartments, aiding the disabled and providing lawyers for indigent defendants.
At the time, the mayor’s office refused to explain the accounting to city auditors, citing “security.”
The Hamptons visits resulted in hotel, gas and other costs for Giuliani’s New York Police Department security detail.
According to Raw Story:
During Wednesday evening’s Republican debate, GOP presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani flatly denied a new report that as mayor of New York he had obscured security expenses during the beginning of an extra-marital affair — but his explanation leaves a lot to be desired, according to the editor-in-chief of the publication that broke the story.
Appearing on the CBS Early Show, Politico‘s John Harris was asked if Giuliani’s answer about the potential scandal was “enough to make it go away.”
“Well, for people who are interested in the details of the story that Ben Smith broke on Politico yesterday, no it’s not,” he said. “Because the question wasn’t whether he had security…the question is why was he hiding security expenses for his relationship, at that time still an extra-marital affair with Judith Nathan, why was he hiding them in obscure city agencies?”
First reported on on Wednesday, the original Politico story cites documents acquired through a New York Freedom of Information Law proving Giuliani “billed obscure city agencies for tens of thousands of dollars in security expenses.” The story also asserts that “mayoral costs had nothing to do with the functions of the little-known city offices that defrayed [Giuliani’s] tabs, including agencies responsible for regulating loft apartments, aiding the disabled and providing lawyers for indigent defendants.” Read on…
As usual, Barrett sums up the significance of the story for the Giuliani campaign:
In retrospect, Giuliani’s embrace of the emir appears peculiar. But it was only a sign of bigger things to come: the launching of a cozy business relationship with terrorist-tolerant Qatar that is inconsistent with the core message of Giuliani’s current presidential campaign, namely that his experience and toughness uniquely equip him to protect America from what he tauntingly calls “Islamic terrorists” — an enemy that he always portrays himself as ready to confront, and the Democrats as ready to accommodate.
The contradictory and stunning reality is that Giuliani Partners, the consulting company that has made Giuliani rich, feasts at the Qatar trough, doing business with the ministry run by the very member of the royal family identified in news and government reports as having concealed KSM — the terrorist mastermind who wired funds from Qatar to his nephew Ramzi Yousef prior to the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, and who also sold the idea of a plane attack on the towers to Osama bin Laden — on his Qatar farm in the mid-1990s…
In other words, as incredible as it might seem, Rudy Giuliani — whose presidential candidacy is steeped in 9/11 iconography — has been doing business with a government agency run by the very man who made the attacks on 9/11 possible.
So, let me get all this straight:
- After the 1993 bombing of the WTC — when he supposedly knew so much about security and stuff — Giuliani ignored expert advice and put NYC emergency headquarters in the WTC
- Before 9/11 — when he was supposedly studying up on terrorism — Rudy was really breaking up his (2nd) marriage via an affair with Judith Nathan (and hiding the charges in obscure agencies)
- After 9/11 — when he was supposedly stiff-arming state sponsors of terrorism — Giuliani was really doing business (big money) with the oil Sheikh who protected and facilitated the 9/11 terrorists
- With the money and contacts and prestige from that and other business, Giuliani runs a presidential campaign claiming he is a big-time pro on fightin’ terrorism — better than everyone else, particularly the Democrats
One has a hard time imagining Giuliani squirming out of sex and money and business ties to terrorism all at the same time, although I am sure he will try his darnedest.
And there’s MORE! From ABC News: Giuliani’s Mistress Used N.Y. Police as Taxi Service. According to TPM, Judi Nathan Had Her Own Taxpayer-Funded Security Detail In 2001. TPM Muckraker further explores the “tricky tryst accounting“.
Well, I would say Giuliani has his hands full. I am absolutely stunned this man is running as a “Conservative”, and that anyone is buying it. I am even more credulous that he has not been held accountable for his behavior and decisions while in office.
This list adds to what we already know.
From a previous post on TheZoo:
Do-over #2 – Rudy Giuliani. The conservative front-runner, who was first married to his second-cousin, divorced her to marry his second wife (who worked in the media), let wife #2 know he was divorcing her during a press conference, and then married his mistress whom he had been having a lengthy, torrid affair with (even going as far as to bring her home to the governor’s mansion while still married to wife #2). Giuliani, who supported gay rights and dabbled quite a bit in cross dressing. Giuliani, who supported a woman’s right to choose. Giuliani, who was on the Iraq Study Group panel but never attended a single meeting due to being too busy making lots of money at speaking engagements. Giuliani, who built the real command center in NY City in the only place that had already been attacked by terrorists in 1993: The World Trade Center. With going against his advisors by placing the command center in WTC7, along with radios that didn’t work – that were outdated and had not been replaced – many first responders died that shouldn’t have died. Giuliani, who said when questioned on the health issues that have arisen with the first responders, that he had spent as much time in the ruins – “as often, if not more” than the cleanup workers who logged hundreds of hours in the smoldering pile”. As reported in the New York Times:
It seems that he was there for a total of 29 hours in those three months, often for short periods or to visit locations adjacent to the rubble. In that same period, many rescue and recovery workers put in daily 12-hour shifts.
The 29 hours Mr. Giuliani spent at ground zero involved 41 appearances, mostly to give tours to other officials and foreign dignitaries. Many entries include meetings away from the site before the tour. For instance, the schedule included 30 minutes on Nov. 15, 2001, for President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, but Mr. Putin’s tour of ground zero was widely reported to have lasted 13 minutes.
Mr. Giuliani seems to have a problem with exaggeration if not outright lying. He has milked this 9/11 issue to death in order to sell himself as the ‘terror’ candidate. He is a terror, that’s for sure. Conservative? Maybe not so much. If he had ONE do-over, I wonder which he would pick. He certainly has a lengthy menu to choose from, and there’s so much more. The New York Times has an article with six reasons why Giuliani will never be president. I don’t think do-overs will work for Rudy..
So, I guess this is the face of the party of “values”?
