John McCain: Predictable

My friend Ripper McCord, over at TPM wrote the following campaign ad for Obama. I think this is an outstanding frame for McCain: predictable.

As in McSame. As in NOT a maverick. As in NOT a reforming centrist. As in just another Republican. As in more bad economic policies and wars. As in everything you would expect from a geriatric warmonger with ties to influence peddling and big oil, no respect for women and a penchant for flip-flopping.

This is Ripper’s ad:

Predictable

Clip from “Original Maverick” McCain ad

He’ll reform Wall Street, battle Big Oil, make America prosper again. He’s the original maverick.

Sound F/X: Needle scratching across record.

Picture freezes. Fade to McCain and then Phil Gramm.

Announcer: Well, well. John McCain is at it again. He says he’ll reform Wall Street, but his economic adviser resigned after he scolded Americans for “whining” about hard times, at the same time lobbying Congress for a foreign bank so his client could push more subprime mortgage loans.

Footage of shuttered homes, “Foreclosed” sign. Cut to John McCain on oil rig.

Announcer: McCain wants billions more in tax breaks for big oil companies while they line their pockets and charge record prices at the pump.

For average Americans, that means more of the same worn-out policies. John McCain. He’s so predictable.

Voiceover: I’m Barack Obama and I approved this message.

I think “predictable” is a great frame. It is not overly aggressive nor is it something which will bite Obama in allowing them to say he is a typical negative campaigner. It allows Obama to press the point that McCain is old politics, the same, has nothing new to offer America. This is pat of Obama’s theme of change – no more tired old, dirty politics.

If you like this frame, I ask that you forward this concept to anyone you might know who has “juice” with the Obama campaign.

We need to take the offensive instead of constantly being on the defense.

Let’s get the word out. And that word is Predictable.

Bush creating ‘embryonic police state’

Raw Story

The Justice Department wants to revise the federal government’s rules for intelligence-gathering by state and local police making it easier to share anything they find about U.S. citizens with the federal government and then letting them retain that information for a decade.

Slip-sliding away, down that very slippery slope, and comfortably easing right on into a police state..
And meeting little to no resistance along the way..

The “Cone of Silence”..

I couldn’t figure out what the heck the press was referring to when they reported McCain hadn’t been in the “Cone of Silence” during the non-debate at Saddleback Church last Saturday (while Barack Obama was out in front of the crowd being questioned by Rick Warren). “Cone of Silence“..?

Today I figured it out.. Get Smart (1960’s).

Despite Assurances, McCain Wasn’t in a ‘Cone of Silence’

Then you have his amazing story that McCain shared during the ‘non-debate’ about his experience as a POW and the “Cross in the Sand”. Apparently, it may not really be his story.. Just borrowed..? (Lifted..)

Is McCain Now Copying Solzhenitsyn?

More from Andrew Sullivan.

And from TalkingPointsMemo: Solzhenitsyn Biographer: Cross-In-Dirt Gulag Story Never Happened

Is there anything the McCain or the GOP won’t do or say, any depths they won’t sink to, in order to win? And hello, this took place in a CHURCH! Just following McCain being asked by Rick Warren was asked what his personal faith meant to him, to which he answered “I am saved and forgiven(and a lying hypocrite)..
