Catch the wave – Open Thread

So…., what is it?

This photo came to me in an email. This is what it said:

Nature is amazing! The water froze the instant the wave broke through the ice.  That’s what it is like in Lake Michigan where it is the coldest weather in decades.  Water freezes the instant  it comes in contact with the air.  The temperature of the water is already some degrees below freezing.

Just look at how the wave froze in mid-air!!!

UPDATE: The photos were actually taken in Antarctica, and represent ice formed over time and uplifted by glaciation.

Thanks to Zoo commenter “imustbeinwonderland” for the clarification.

  1. nwmuse…

    I retract my cynical remarks….

looking at the additional pix now, they do look genuine.

There’s surely no way one wave that apparent size would freeze instantly BUT a smaller wave could freeze and then bigger waves come along, freezing as they flow over the smaller frozen waves and it just builds up. The process would be pretty rapid.

Unless this person actually SAW a single wave he writes wave– flash freeze–that would be really amazing! But its not clear either way. .

It would be much the same as ‘frozen waterfalls’—they don’t flash-freeze immediately but they build up quickly.

  2. I think the text is a bit dramatic. It’s likely the waves just washed over prior frozen waves and built up over time.

Flash frozen waves would be rather Doctor Who-ish. 😀

  3. I dunno about the science but it sure looks cool! When I worked in Mandan, ND in the winter of 79 you could spit and hear it freeze in the air but a wave?

And congrats on the test Zooey.

And 5th on a great guest post. Dude.

  4. Had an interesting lunch moment today. I went to Taco Bell (since it was closest to the jobsite) and surprise, Fox News was playing. The best part was the end of a segment when the announcers were saying how the Republicans were coming out with their “new plans” while they played clips of various Republicans with the sound off.

    Mouths moving, nothing coming out.

I’m sure the other customers were entertained by the soda snort followed by coughing and laughing.

  5. Yeah but I can never show my face in that Taco Bell again. Mt. Dew Baja through the sinus passages is no fun.

But it was great seeing the looks of confusion on their faces while I laughed.

  6. True but when you are 100 miles from home, how bad can they screw up beans and veggies on a tortilla? Its fast cheap and filling.

  7. And I can’t believe there isn’t some sort of snarky post for our Lady of Dan Quayle’s latest little giggle. She is obviously a graduate of Dan’s mail order course for Proper Political Speak.

Hoot-Smalley? The Queen of Menopausal Mendacity strikes again.

  8. Well, Shayne, I suppose I could always go ask them if they have a security cam tape. 😉

And don’t ever drink that Baja Blast stuff. It feels like I ran Drano through my nose today. I’m sticking to root beer from now on.
