Happy Birthday Mr President

I couldn’t resist.

But, honestly, I am still really impressed by the change that has been brought on this year. Seen from the outside it is much more, than you all maybe realize. For me personally it means “reason” has returned to the White House. And that is a welcome relief, believe me.

There is a rough road ahead, but for today I wish your President a Happy Birthday and may he stay safe and healthy.

  1. Thanks for posting this, EV.

It’s nice to hear that people outside the US recognize a difference. Yes, Obama is bringing change. If he wasn’t a threat to the lobbyists, they wouldn’t be fighting so hard against him. Teddy Roosevelt had to fight the monopolies when he was president. It wasn’t easy then and it isn’t easy now. Teddy Roosevelt is my favorite president followed by Theodore Roosevelt. Thanks for pointing out my redundancy. Yes, the other Roosevelt was Franklin. I already mentioned Theodore.

  2. Cat’s,
One of your Roosevelts had to be FDR.

Hartmann periodically plays a scratchy recording of the speech given by FDR at the 1936 Democratic Convention. My favorite excerpts:

“It was natural and perhaps human that the privileged princes of these new economic dynasties, thirsting for power, reached out for control over government itself. They created a new despotism and wrapped it in the robes of legal sanction. In its service new mercenaries sought to regiment the people, their labor, and their property. And as a result the average man once more confronts the problem that faced the Minute Man.

The hours men and women worked, the wages they received, the conditions of their labor – these had passed beyond the control of the people, and were imposed by this new industrial dictatorship. The savings of the average family, the capital of the small-businessmen, the investments set aside for old age – other people’s money – these were tools which the new economic royalty used to dig itself in.” (Tools, like using Social Security funds in the budget, started by Reagan, to hide deficit spending, and creating 401Ks to put more money into the markets, thus increasing the value of THEIR investments, plus attempting to make the middle class think their success is tied to the wealthy investors.)

“These economic royalists complain that we seek to overthrow the institutions of America. What they really complain of is that we seek to take away their power. Our allegiance to American institutions requires the overthrow of this kind of power. In vain they seek to hide behind the flag and the Constitution. In their blindness they forget what the flag and the Constitution stand for. Now, as always, they stand for democracy, not tyranny; for freedom, not subjection; and against a dictatorship by mob rule and the over-privileged alike.”

Obama needs to make almost this exact same speech. Seventy three years later, we are facing the same basic conditions.

  3. Helen Thomas was born on this day also.

Randi Rhodes is singing happy birthday to Obama, in the style of Marilyn.
