The Watering Hole: October 16 – Hoaxes

This is our open thread. Please feel free to offer your own comments on any subject.

On this date in 1906 Friedrich Wilhelm Voigt, the Captain of Köpenick,  fooled the entire city of  Köpenick and eleven soldiers, pretending to be a Prussian officer. The links tell the story better than I ever could.

  1. Morning all. My sister is a doctor and she forwarded this to me in an email. Makes a lot of sense to me so I thought I’d share it.

Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist)
having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in
institutions like Hinduja Hospital , Bombay Hospital , Saifee Hospital ,
Tata Memorial etc… Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine
Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical
    Centre, Malad (W).

The following message given by him, I feel makes a lot of sense and is
    important for all to know

The only portals of e ntry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a
global epidemic of this nature, it’s almost impossible to avoid coming
into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is
not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1
infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms
and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not
fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced
(instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

    1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official
    communications).

    2. “Hands-off-the-face” approach. Resist all temptations to touch any
part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

    3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don’t
trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/
nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple
gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has
the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected
o ne. Don’t underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful
    preventative method.

    4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with
warm salt water… *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti
(very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose
hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in
warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

    5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C
(Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin
C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

    6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can.
*Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the
reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat
into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

I suggest you pass this on to your entire e-list. You never know who
might pay attention to it – and STAY ALIVE because of it.

  2. nwmuse, that is a great article. Palast does exceptional work. And even neater, the picture of him and Wendell Potter was taken at Fighting Bob Fest back in September. They were both speakers. along with Senators Harkin and Sanders.

  3. RUCerious,
NWMuse put a link up about that La. JoP on yesterday’s Watering Hole. Then we got tangled up in the balloon boy hoax.

“I don’t do interracial marriages because I don’t want to put children in a situation they didn’t bring on themselves,” Bardwell said. “In my heart, I feel the children will later suffer.”

As Badmoodman put it on the thread at TP,
“Geeze, and if they had kids, one of them could become president some day. The horror.”
I can’t improve on that, and it’s the PERFECT rebuttal to that cracker in Louisiana.
If I was in Mobile, Alabama, and I HAD to get to Beaumont, Texas, I couldn’t bring myself to drive through that state. We have some pretty bad rednecks here in Alabama, and some are bad in Georgia, but from Jackson, Mississippi on southward is the worst this country has.

  4. What about George W Bush, he fooled 30% of the American public for 8 years that he was?

    (a) An accomplished National Gaurd officer
    (b) A successful business man
    (c) US President

  5. Well, I just brought the tool boxes home, so I really must be out of a job.

As much as I had to move to make room, I realized how bad I need a clear-out!

  6. Right on Muse, I’d seen that too. I find myself wondering what it is going to be when Glenn Beck falls…. farm animal, choirboy, vegetable, smearing vicks on your privates?

  7. HoR,
Try to go independent. All you need is a garage and a field in Alabama. Pick up a fake German accent, change your first name to Fritz or Hörst and specialize in European brands. It helps to have blue eyes and blond hair.

  8. Walt,

“All you need is a garage and a field in Alabama.”
That would be a tractor mechanic?

    “specialize in European brands”
I like English and Scottish ales. Will that do?

“It helps to have blue eyes and blond hair.”
Nope, dark hair and brown eyes.

Somehow I don’t think you understood that I was in CNC machining. I did the Porsche gig once, but that clientele is long gone.

  9. House, good luck. I work with machine builders and shops up here in Wi and most are dealing with layoffs but optimistic. A good CNC operator should never be out of work long.

  10. Nope Walt,

Started out in machine work, got into Porsche repair through contacts in the Porsche Club, when the Challenger tragedy put the shuttle program on hold in ’86-’87, but went back to machine work in ’89. Still had the bug to try self-employment, so we had the Porsche shop until ’98. I’ve been back in machine work since then. The defense budget wasn’t cut, so there are jobs out there. I got a white collar severance and retension bonus package, so I am covered until the end of February, if I’m still out of work. Hey, I even qualify for unemployment after the first week in Nov!

  11. HoR,
Hang in there. My father, father in law and I have each gone through periods of forced idleness. Dad had it easiest – he had so many connections in the defense industry that he settled in as a Beltway bandit. Father in law, a model maker (machinist) for the foundry at GE went into custom cabinetry for very rich homes. I learned the MS GUI and coasted on that for about eleven years.

  12. Walt,
Thanks for the encouragement. The company I was with closed a Memphis plant last year and we were next on the list, if the economy didn’t improve. So no more medical orthopedics, and back to defense work. I don’t think NASA knows what they are going to do just yet. I have a house (my parents’) to sell, and I might sell mine later, ( I’m in a historic district, inflated taxes and restricted improvements) after I get some more done inside. Then reduce the car and parts collection and maybe I could travel to a job if needed. There’s also a lot of free school options because of the way the company shut us down. They used to disqualify you for unemployment in Alabama if you went to school, now they’ve learned better.
