The Watering Hole: February 17 – Sub: CSS Hunley

On February 17, 1864,  the CSS Hunley attacked and sank the  USS Housatonic in Charleston harbor.  Soon thereafter the Hunley also sank, along with her crew of eight. Over 136 years later, on August 8, 2000, the wreck and the remains of the crewmen were recovered. After full DNA evaluation, each crewman was buried with full military honors on April 14, 2004.

  1. i remember watching a documentary about the raising of the Hunley, a very interesting show. the primitive way the ship was structured was eye opening. correct me if i’m wrong, but i think there was another prototype that also sunk killing all the crewmen.
