Music night. Happy Birthday, Jerry

I first heard Jerry Douglas playing on a Maura O’Connell album in the late 80s and instantly fell in love (with both of them). Since then, I’ve heard him playing his dobro with other instrumentalists, primarily folk and country music, and backing exceptional vocalists. I don’t know if he’s getting all the professional work for dobro players, but he is not only a brilliant musician, but instantly recognizable in a recording. I can always pick up his crystalline sound and it invariably gives me a chill. I was tickled to find a video of one of my favorite cuts of his, with Russ Barenberg and Edgar Meyer, from the Skip, Hop & Wobble album. More music after the jump, including Allison Krauss. Don’t miss it.

  1. I liked Pushed Too Far, but Alison Krause sang Carolina too slow for me. JT sings it too slow and he doesn’t do it that slow. Pretty, but slow.

  2. Another World
Original words and music “Another Girl” by John Lennon and Paul McCartney,
Additional lyrics by Wayne A. Schneider

For we have not another world, another world…

You’re making me say that I trust nobody but you
But as from today well I just can’t say that it’s true
I ain’t no fool and I still say it’s all we got
For we have not another world, another world

It’s deeper than all the spills (more)

  3. The Right Ignores
Original words and music “The Night Before” by John Lennon and Paul McCartney
Additional lyrics by Wayne A. Schneider

We hear all these guys (ah the Right ignores)
Proof was in our eyes (ah the Right ignores)
    But to facts they’re blind
    You can’t change their mind
Seems we like the things the Right ignores

Were we hearing lies (ah the Right ignores)(more)

  4. Wayne, you really like the Beatle tunes. I’d never heard Another Girl before your parody.

I see Shayne got her video fixed.

  5. Carolina. Its sort of sad that some of the folks down south can’t appreciate the beauty of their lands.

  6. Thanks, House. I tried editing Shayne’s comment, thanks to what Zooey taught me. (Which is what you said to her.) And what can I say? The Beatles provide such great material to work with. Half the trick to writing a good parody is starting with a good song.

  7. Half the trick to writing a good parody is starting with a good song.

And the other half is having the gift of a twisted intellect. Rock on, Wayne.

  8. My one claim to parody fame.

    “Momma, just killed a man
Put my butt against his head
Pulled my finger now he’s dead.”

  9. Found another song with a clavioline in it. It’s in the background at the beginning and solo at 1:33. Sorry if there are any anti-Vallis out there.

  10. Ok, Franki had a disco hit in the late 70’s and I am damned but I can’t remember the title or find it.

  11. My wife and I have a theory about Sting. We believe him to be a very old soul, having lived many spendid lives, which results in talent, creativity and wisdom.

  12. While I sort of quit paying attention to music in the early 80’s, there is more to my life than disco.

  13. Shayne, I was married. Sort of had the same effect. Except for my wonderful girls, I’d rather have been drinking

  14. I didn’t get married until ’87, and all that stopped was the car club events. Never had money for tires anymore.

  15. House, marriage always means different things. Sadly it usually means guys give things up. Not a bad thing since guys tend to want things that are fun and don’t raise kids.

  16. Cool. BP is now claiming that this incident is unprecedented. I think they are being shy. To have one company manage to kill off one of the seven seas is quite an accomplishment.

    • I watched it when she performed it at the Grammys last year. I was just so totally blown away.. I had never seen anything like that choreographed so beautifully and perfectly executed. The control.. Her singing was amazing on that song. The audience of her peers were totally blown away. Nice song.

  17. Ok, ok . . . no more “70’s” jangle . Of course, after seeing the first “lightning bugs” of the season tonight, I feel compelled to share this light little tune:

  18. Thanks hoodathunk. Burton Cummings was pretty cute. I was just thinking too bad we couldn’t see him in lass’s video.

  19. Jerry Douglas, anyone? Oy.

Grassroots? They played at a high school dance my senior year. My friends and I were convinced (with good reason) that the drummer was more stoned than we were.

  20. Bill Maher says they didn’t make that fake video of Sadam Hussein with young boys because they didn’t want to crash the Vaticans server. Ouch.

  21. Has anyone seen this twitter? –

It is a statement onto itself!

  22. I’m going to have to say good night, before I doze off here. I don’t get much warning when I get sleepy.
