Watering Hole – Monday, May 23, 2011 – True Democracy

It’s the evil thing…

The Supreme Court of the United States of America spit on our democracy when they handed over our government to rich corporations, both domestic and foreign, by their decision to support Corporations Citizens United.

This is our Open Thread.  Speak up or Sing, which ever works best for you   🙂

  1. Ooooh Cats!!! Don’t even get me started on this one … I could be commenting here all day! !! And I do have much to sing and say about this … today, I will have to channel my passion for this issue into something more constructive: packing boxes and moving in the rain 😉

II will check in as I can … much love to y’all. 🙂

  2. The only ‘appropriate’ aspect of the Koch brothers in their current incarnation is their last name. It’s German, even as they themselves are the American version that’s most reflective of the German era that began in 1932-33.

They give me reason to forfeit the loyalty I once held for capitalism and its “free market” undercurrent in favor of corporate breakup, industrial nationalization, and redistribution of profit to The People — and away from those who already have and own far too much. The Kochs are, in fact, the vanguard of American failure, currently as predictable as it is imminent.

Genetically, they represent the human equivalent of the pasture bull, the mean spirited variety with singular goal of screwing everything that moves. Perhaps the proper course is to “steer” them in a more appropriate direction.

  3. I am not running for president. I am however, walking or perhaps crawling for it. Send your first paycheck of every month.

  4. But Ceriously, folks. The Corporations United decision stamps this SCROTUS as a failed institution. They no longer arbitrate constitutionality, and are no longer above the political fray in adjudicating law.
    They’ve failed us.

  5. It’s not the Supreme Court ruling – it’s Congress.

Corporations are created by statute, and their “personhood” can be limited by statute.

Unfortunately, an armed revolution is more likely than Congress voting to limit Corporate Power.

  6. The storm systems yesterday passed through here in two distinct bands. There were several tornadoes that touched down just south of me but in rural areas. Significant damage but nothing like North Mn or Joplin.

The fascinating part about them was it was the very first time I have ever experienced a thunder storm where the thunder never stopped. For the entire 20 minutes or so that both storms were passing the thunder was a continuous rumble with loud claps when the lightning flashed. Very impressive.

  7. Quote of the Day:

“It has been a really tough weekend,” – Harold Camping, today, who convinced thousands The Rapture would occur on Saturday.

  8. BMM, Worldnetnews is presumably taking a bath on their piece of crap book by that piece of crap Jerome Corsi, hence any attempt to keep ‘birtherism’ in the news.

  9. I’m guessing that storm system was associated with the one that crossed Colorado Thursday PM and into Friday of last week. East of Colorado Springs there was an extremely rare tornado that did some local damage, and north of the Springs where we were it snowed Thurs. evening. Cold, too. Today, back to normal.

  10. So the DJJ is investigating Lance Armstrong? That’s it? There’s nothing better for Eric Holder to do?

  11. Regarding “natural born Citizen:”

People born via a C-Section are not “natural born” hence ineligible to become President. The Founding Fathers were obviously concerned that one must pass through the vagina of a woman in order to be qualified to lead the Country.

  12. It is a “stuff I should rent uhaul” move, that has morphed, once again into “stuff I am cramming into the Barbie Jeep” move. The contents of my house are being emptied into storage here; the “big truck” will then move my stuff to NH over the next month or so, as folks are available to help over the next few weekends on the “north” end.

My challenge is a lot of this “stuff” is more of sentimental value (ie. great grandmothers sewing machine) and will, because I don’t have space in my NH place, wind up in storage anyway; I wanted to keep my other grandmothers stuff in PA to stay with the house (kind of a provenance thing), yet don’t necessarily trust whatever potential renters might live there … And then I wrestle with, “Why do I even give a s*%& about this stud anyway? Noone else seems to!!” Indeed, I will be grateful when this is done 😉

  13. Spell-check won’t catch a misspelled word if the mistake exists as a word.

“Why do I even give a s*%& about this stud anyway? Noone else seems to!!”

That sounds like what my future-ex said!

  14. Hey, one should always bring one’s studs along; always entertaining and it is not as though they grow on trees.

Unless your studs are all 2X4’s, in which case never mind …

(One of my plans for later this summer or into fall is to sell some 75% — 80% of my books. I’ve already given away a significant part of the furniture I had in storage to people who can use it.)

  15. A joint statement by Hillary and Netanyahu from last November 11. Money quote:

“The Prime Minister and the Secretary agreed on the importance of continuing direct negotiations to achieve our goals. The Secretary reiterated that “the United States believes that through good-faith negotiations, the parties can mutually agree on an outcome which ends the conflict and reconciles the Palestinian goal of an independent and viable state, based on the 1967 lines, with agreed swaps, and the Israeli goal of a Jewish state with secure and recognized borders that reflect subsequent developments and meet Israeli security requirements.”

What a fucking liar Bibi is, and how pathetic that so many wingnuts fell for his hissy fit yet again.

    • Found this link at MaddowBlog…not much in terms of visuals, but the audio is devastating.

The video i took while at Fastrip on east 20th street. We huddled in the back of the store until the glass got sucked out , then ran into the walk in storage fridge. Sorry for the lack of visuals but the audio is pretty telling of how intense the storm was.

  16. “Why do I even give a s*%& about this stud anyway? Noone else seems to!!”

That sounds like what my future-ex said!

    House we love the stud!

  17. Gary, I was thinking about that last night. A town that I stayed in for two weeks in 1975, Pierce City, Missouri, was nearly wiped out by a tornado in 2003. It’s east of Joplin, and south of I-44, near Monett, where I worked.

I think the right front suspension broke on the Obama limo, the right rear tire came completely off the ground when it bounced.

  18. Badmoodman, I know why I care about my stud … 😉

Gary, I have no furniture in storage (don’t plan to either), which is why I am wrestling with the. “Who really needs a 128 y.o. who really knows if it is working but it looks kinda cool sorta and besides it was my greatgrandmothers … ” stuff at the moment. A have more books and papers than any human should; sadly, HIPPAA requires me to keep records of all minors I have seen until they turn 21 … x that by a 15 years of 3 1/2 + year olds and various legal files I have to have available … it is a storage nightmare. Books are only a teeny part for me, at the moment … 😉

  19. zx, I heard just a few moments of his ‘I’m running because Obama doesn’t know anything and is running us into the ditch’ spewing.
Sounds like St. Ronnie: Ruin a state then run to ruin the country…

  20. I really don’t have much patience for the whole running for president without announcing. And then pretending that anyone is surprised by the announcement.

  21. So Lass, you’re moving to NH? From? Why? (Yes I’m being nosey, but look at this way. Answering will give you an excuse not to pack. Procrastination is cool.)

  22. Harold Camping declined Monday to immediately comment to The Associated Press at his home, but said he’ll make a full statement in a radio broadcast later in the day.

Some of Camping’s followers say they are surprised they were not swept up to heaven, after Camping preached for years through his Oakland-based Family Radio International media empire that the Rapture was coming on May 21.
Along with the disappointment, believers who spent their savings to advertise the world’s end are now facing more earthly concerns.

  23. Zxbe, I suspect you may have gleaned some of this information from my previous posts. isince you indicate that procrastination is cool, however, I must indulge your curiosity 😉

  24. zx, those were great photos of the flowers. Arboretums are the most wonderful places – interesting species; colors of flowers that just shout – ‘take my picture’!

  25. I love flowers and photos of them, too! I will try to check out the zxbecolllection; the last time I did on the droid, I kept getting 404 error messages … I will check soon!

  26. Hmmm. Shouldn’t be any 404’s. If it happens again let me know.

In terms of the planets being aligned, I seem to recall reading that there was some rare conjunction in the last few days. So were you speaking literally or metaphorically? (Both perhaps.)

  27. I will, zxbe … and both, for sure 🙂

And naps are cool … and my eyes are tweaky (actually, they are olive green in color with various ocular irregularities, but why quibble?)

I will check back … Girl Scout Promise 🙂

  28. Zooey, keep in mind that volume is the most important element in resumes. The more words you can cram in the better. Little drawings are good as well. And modern resumes are always done in pencil.

  29. Lass: “Who really needs a 128 y.o.” — depends on the completion of that phrase. If it is a bottle of whisky, I’ll take it off your hands if it is a problem. If, on the other hand, it was the previously mentioned stud then, “who really knows if it is working but it looks kinda cool sorta and besides it was my greatgrandmothers … ” takes on an extremely wrong disturbingly appropriate meaning.

  30. Gary, you make me giggle!!

Hooda, you are wise … God is an iron in many, many ways 🙂

And Badmoodman, I love you with the intensity of a thousand white hot suns …

    Just sayin’ 😉

  31. I am sorry to hear that, Badmoodman. If there is anything you need to hear from me to ease that tension, either on this page or a private email, please let me know… for real …

And zxbe, thanks for your continued encouragement 😉

  32. Late, as usual, but I saw a clip tonight of Newt trying to explain away his $500,000 Tiffany account, and it’s been bothering me. He said it was a normal revolving, no interest account. Now, how many of you out there have this kind of revolving no interest account with a limit of a half million?

  33. I had some “work” on TP? I’ve mostly avoided the place. I do drive-bys mostly now and don’t even know what their topics are most of the time.

Did ya see the desert mansion in Arizona that The Wasilla Diva reportedly bought?

  34. Zooey, I have a “no interest 12 months same as cash” account with Home Depot on my new front load washer and matching dryer (my 17 year old Kenmore stackable caught on fire), but that’s no where near a half million. How does he get away with saying that a half million revolving, no interest, account is normal? Guess it really doesn’t matter. This man will never get the nomination. It just shows how out of touch the Republicans are if they consider half million dollar revolving accounts “normal”.

    • You have to remember that Newt is completely amoral. Whatever he’s saying at the moment is his truth, and no, he is totally out of touch — with anything approaching normal humanity.

  35. “Moondoggy the Great …. will reveal himself …. when he …. is …. Ready” ~ Lass

    You are right, of course.

  36. “dread pirate” Roberts, of course.

    Then there’s…

“My name is Diego Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

Lots of great quotes in that movie.

  37. Radio Host Says Rapture Actually Coming In October

California preacher Harold Camping says his prophecy that the world would end was off by five months because Judgment Day actually will come on October 21.

Family Radio’s special projects coordinator, Michael Garcia said he believed the delay was God’s way of separating true believers from those willing to doubt what he said were clear biblical warnings.
“Maybe this had to happen for there to be a separation between those who have faith and those who don’t,” he said. “It’s highly possible that our Lord is delaying his coming.”
