Roast Goose
I tried to express the situation where Americans find themselves after the debt agreement on Sunday. At first I thought that I could say: “Our goose is cooked.” This statement does not really fit our situation because it implies that we have been caught in a lie or cheated on a partner and will have to pay in some matter such as being fired, ostracized or divorced depending on the nature of the ‘crime’.
I came to the realization that a better statement would be: “We are all goners” as that implies the visage of death or loss through something that was not really our fault. That expression derives itself from the old British term ‘gone Goose’.
We can also say that the debt agreement has “Killed the goose (the middle class) that lays the golden eggs.”
Geese play a central part in all these sayings because geese supplied eggs and meat to guilds-men and the middle class in pre-Victorian Britain. They were easy to care for and mowed the grass around town to boot. In some towns, they were allowed free range and harvested by their designated owner(s). Often the lord (small ‘l’) was the owner who extracted a fee (tax) on said harvest.
Right now the “silly geese” of Congress are giving me “goose bumps” from fear because I will gain nothing but a “goose egg” due to their policies. The basic reason for this situation is that Obama “can’t say boo to a goose.”

After hearing the threats towards and complaints from the baggers toward their member of Congress, this debt ceiling deal might not be as bad as we think. If the baggers hate it, then there must something in it for us.
The Teabaggers seem to have won the current budget battle.
But, we can’t give up.
We must be fanatic in our determination.
The alternatives are unthinkable.
Spot on. The alternative is to abdicate to the baggers, which I will never do.
Obama may be a centrist, and a huge disappointment as his actions don’t live up to his rhetoric, but the thought of a Republican controlled government, with a Romney or whomever appointing two more fascists to the Supreme Court would mean the end of America as we know it.
My wingnut cousin likes to taunt, makes him feel good, like the big man he can never be. Baggers are his cup of tea all the way so naturally the taunts, these days, have a fresh head of steam. My response to his most recent ‘nyah nyah’ was simple. I said, “I wish for only two things: One, I hope that you live long enough to witness the full consequence of the malevolent and destructive political philosophy which you support and embrace, and two, I hope that I do not.”
Crickets.

I’m not so sure that the baggers agree with you. I’ve seen comments by baggers in which they are very disappointed in this deal. Some baggers feel like they lost and were betrayed.
A couple of things struck me over the past day.
Once again, the Boner squad holds American workers hostage, this time in refusing to fund the FAA without a rule change that cripples the unions. Seventy Four Thousand American Workers furloughed while Congress vacations.
Just a gentle reminder, it does matter who you vote for, in these respects.
And, Iraqi government officials are now trying to extend our troops authorization to stay there forever.

Of course Iraqi officials want us to stay in Iraq because many of them have become extremely wealthy since we invaded them and they don’t want their cash flow threatened if our troops leave.
I read an article a year ago about how multinational corporations, with the help of our government and military, have taken over the Iraqi economy. Paul Bremer and others, along with some of these same Iraqi officials wrote all of the Iraqi laws and regulations etc, etc, that has ensured that Iraq and all of it’s wealth will go to the multinational corporations and a few corrupted Iraqi officials.
We all know the power and influence the banks, Wall Street, the oil industry, big pharma, big aggie, the US Chamber Of Commerce has over our elected officials, why wouldn’t the military industrial complex have that same influence and power?
Iraq, Afghanistan and the perpetual war on terrorism has made the MIC a fortune, just as the cold war threat made them a fortune in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. They aren’t going to allow our government to interfere with their profitability.
Besides….like Afghanistan, Iraq has sadly become the forgotten war in the eyes of the public.
It is just surprising how these places like Iraq and Afghanistan have US backed and built governments that think having a US military presence is good for their country…not.
Look at how well that worked in Vietnam, the Philippines, Panama, Iran, Egypt many other places.
I’m beginning to feel this strong need to do something other than write letters and blog posts.
Just don’t go blowing up any Federal buildings.
hooda,funny enough. We Germans don’t complain. We really had no disadvantages from US troops in our country, except for the rockets stationed here. And boy did we protest. One rally brought 1 Million people to Bonn. I was 1/1’000’000 of them. Other than that we mostly profited. (I had my first, and last, root beer at the American Octoberfest in the Munich barracks **ugh**)
EV, we don’t do that sort of stuff to countries that have White Christians as a majority. That would be tacky. The only country I know of that managed to evade the issue is Japan. Otherwise, we tend to hire those who acknowledge that white Christian folk will know how to run things better than the local (pick your color) folk.
America has always been exceptionally bigoted.
Do we need to re-start the anti-war movement?
As it stands we would have to do so with an Ipod app or a video game. The main reason the crowd that raised so much havoc in the 60’s did so over the draft. This time the MIC learned better.
At the core of the problem is the privatization of the military. The contractors make a fortune, and the military is reliant on them to survive.
I’d like to see some pols run on the plank on de-privatizing the military and having them train/provide their own cooks, clerks, engineers, etc…
Then it would take 8 support troops for each combat soldier, would cost less, and more Americans would be affected by any war we get into, hence, fewer wars…
At least that’s my take.
I’m thinking the core of the problem is our government being able to commit obscene amounts of troops and money to fight a handful of civilian criminals while the media ignores the damage being done overseas.
But don’t mind me. I’m still pissed the US invaded an island about the size of Disney World in response to a Marine barracks being blown up on the other side of the world. And getting away with it.

Butler was right. Would still be right today, probably even more right today. The fact that America so willingly and so perpetually engages in wars based only on spurious ‘logic’ tells the story: at it’s core, this is an evil and totally rotten country, a combination of amoral and immoral self-aggrandizing profiteers to whom nothing has value other than the accumulation of wealth and power.

I have to agree with Benen. This has been a tough presidency. Obama has achieved many good things. Some of these could be better. Washington DC is where the vipers live and operate. I remember people that worked for Clinton remarking about how vicious it is in DC.

It haunts me that something ( loose foam insulation) that seemed ‘insignificant’ at the time was responsible to bring it down.
It’s mostly surreal shock initially then followed by incredible sadness. I imagine that it must be similar to what the families of the WTC bombings must have felt.
When I visit relatives, there is a statue of Rick at the airport and I am reminded again (like a punch in the gut).
After Challenger blew up, I never thought that that it would happen again. But Space travel is a dangerous thing, even in our efforts to make it as safe and routine as possible. I believe Rick would have chosen to go on that mission even knowing that he would not be coming back.

Those who insist we indoctrinate our youngsters with tales of sky fairies and evil red dudes with horns and spiked tails are, indeed, far far more guilty of intellectual molestation of children than are those who show and teach their kids the wonders of unmolested nature, who teach compassion rather than distrust and fear, who are not afraid to promote science and the lessons it teaches us every day of the year.
I’ll still never forget the day that my younger daughter came home from a weekend visit with a school friend where she’d wound up having to go to a fundie “church” (it was in a former Mexican restaurant next to a Walmart parking lot) for Sunday service. She said, “Dad, thank you SO MUCH for never making me go to church!”
I always figured that if a child wants to seek religion as an adult, fine, feel free, and good luck. But such should be an honest desire, not one hitched to the wagon of religious mind-bending propaganda embedded from day one forward.
One of the reasons I am not married anymore is that I never took a stand on religion for the kids. I don’t know if my eldest was baptized as I didn’t meet him until he was 2 and his mom never said. My two girls were not baptized as infants. The elder eventually chose to do so in her early teens. The younger is still pagan. All of them had many opportunities to deal with religion as they grew up. I hate to say my youngest stood up in the pew at church for Xmas service at the ripe age of 3 or so and told the minister to shut up. Twice.
Neither of mine were baptized. No Sunday School, no confirmation, no wish-you-were-somewhere-else-every-Sunday service, no bible, no prayers (not even table grace), no nothin’. If a question ever came up (which was seldom) I’d answer it as best I could, always avoiding all dogmatic BS.
And now, today, America is falling apart at the seams. The fascists are on the verge of a hostile takeover, the economy is crashing, the words “The Poor” now define me, and, too, the country which by default I’ve called ‘home’ all my life. America’s new slogan, straight from the buybull:

Our “librul media” not to mention the overtly Reich-wing elements, really sucks. They are gleefully blaming President Obama for the slide (is collapse too strong a word) in the stock market because of “his debt limit deal”. Let’s look at that.
President Obama hosted discussions and signed the bill that was passed. He didn’t write the bill. He didn’t commission the bill. And, although he signed it to avert default, he didn’t even say that he liked the bill.
The bill was written by the GOP and rammed through by the GOP because they control the House, where budget bills must originate. Boner has said it was “98%” of what the GOoPers wanted. And yet?
The media is calling it “Obama’s compromise” and such. What the fuck are President and Obama and the Dems supposed to do? I’m dead certain that we will soon see GOoPers claiming that “it’s all Obama’s fault” because he failed to stop them from acting rashly.
I beleive its called the Ted Bundy defense.
As I read that, the Senate is capitulating to the House version of the bill. That’s the version that shuts out the union negotiations.

My retirement just got put off 3 years or so.
This was the part of the whole game that was buried in America due to media politics. The rest of the world was also concerned about whether America was going to cut it’s own throat on the debt thing.
But the interesting thing is the US only saw that. What the rest of the world was watching was HOW we did it. And frankly, we failed. We left it a political football that will be kicked around for the next 6 months, destabilizing not only our economy but the rest of the world.

It looks like T-Paw’s candidacy is a non-starter so This is hardly big news but he is from my home state so I feel compelled to make a comment.
T-Paw isn’t stupid or even ignorant. He is, however, a bald-faced liar who will do/say anything to pull a few fringe voters away from Crazy Shelly. I’m pretty sure that there is no peer reviewed work that supports a claim that most or all climate change is due to natural causes unless one considers the greenhouse effect to be a natural cause. It is, in fact, a natural process but it’s running away because of human emissions.
I’ve posted this link before but it’s worth repeating for those who may get into an argument with a reasonable person who simply doesn’t know much about climate change. Liars and fanatics are hopeless so we have to try and outnumber them because we will never change their minds.

One of the comments said Randi Rhodes had already reported this, and the comment was ‘three days ago’. I turned her show on this afternoon, and she repeated the same interpretation, that the CBO scores all bills against existing law, which requires that the Bush Tax Cuts expire. Pretty sneaky of the Pres. to get that in there. Randi is sure Boner knows this, and mislead his side of the aisle. I haven’t yet seen Boner prove he’s that astute.
Anyway, I’ll take it.

After his alleged humiliation, the latest poll from the NYT/CBS sees the silver lining for Obama. He doesn’t come out smelling like roses, but the GOP has tainted itself badly by its tactics in the eyes of Americans. Obama’s handling comes out a wash, 46-47 approve-disapprove; Boehner does worse: 30 – 57. His 57 percent disapproval is up from 41 percent in April, with all the undecideds headed into the disapprove column. On who is trusted the most on the economy, Obama beats the GOP 47 – 33. And on the core question of whether this is a time to compromise or to stick to principles, compromise wins 85 – 12.
Ask yourself: between Obama and the GOP, who has landed on the right side of that equation?
The banks, Wall Street, multinational corporations, big business, the oil/energy industries, big pharma, big aggie, health insurance companies, the military industrial complex, the US Chamber Of Commerce, the wealthiest Americans. 😉

I’m still with Obama. He did accomplish a lot in the last 2 years. We tend to focus on what we didn’t get and forget to look at what we did get.
Indeed. The fact is that President Obama, as Thom Hartmann recently said, “respects the process to a fault”. He doesn’t let the GOoPers win. He plays the role assigned to him and works within its limits. The encouraging part, as this poll indicates, is that it looks like a lot of people realize that.
As much as we may enjoy seeing more forceful rhetoric from the president I’m not sure that it would be productive. If he does anything but kiss ass he is excoriated in the “librul media”. If he actually tried to invoke anything like the powers that Bush took upon himself he would be impeached.

So I’m listening to the Ed Schultz radio show earlier today, his guest host Jeff Santos and some democratic guest were saying how we can’t give up on Obama and the democrats now. They mentioned how we need to flood our congress critters phone lines, both democratic and republican congress critters and tell them what we want them to do and what to stand up for.
Um….In some cases I believe the majority of progressives and the rest of America spoke out for and wanted:
* Affordable health care/insurance
* Single payer health care
* The Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans to expire
* Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid benefits untouched
* The wars to end and to bring our troops home
* An equal, balanced approach between revenue and spending cuts in the budget
* Unemployment benefit extensions for the 99ers.
* Elizabeth Warren as head of the Consumer Financial Protection Agency
The politicians don’t phucking care what we want and more importantly cannot do the right, moral, decent thing to do because corporate money and interest won’t allow them to.
Badmoonman, those polls are nice but you know how the republicans seem to always control the message and how the democrats always seem to drop the ball in the message department even when the republicans serve an issue up on a silver platter.
I don’t want to see the republicans gain back power but if Obama wins a second term and continues to operate as he has through out his first term, it won’t matter who becomes our next president. If Obama doesn’t come out swinging like both Presidents Roosevelt, we are phucked!
I have recently come to think that the Dems are not failing in getting their message out. The “librul media” is suppressing their message. Recently, for the first time I’ve seen, the Strib actually ran a story about Al Franken. They condemned him for “returning to his SNL roots” when he put up a placard that said “welcome terrorists” because that’s what would have happened if the military and homeland security didn’t get paid in a government default.
I got curious and searched YouTube for Franken clips and, despite never hearing about it, he’s as forceful and clever as he was as a private citizen and satirist. Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi have “dropped their gloves” and flatly stated that the GOoPers are intentionally crashing the economy in an effort to win the White House and Senate. Again, the “librul media” failed to report it. I think a lot of Dems are saying the right things but the only place one hears them is “lefty blogs”, YouTube, and Cspan2 at 4:00 in the morning.
A Daily Kos Diary, posted today, which speaks in quite some depth about the European financial dilemma and how it relates to the global financial dilemma. Things sound pretty dour, and the American fuck-around with its debt ceiling and its proposed budget cuts isn’t helping the matter at all.
I’m not ‘banker’ enough to grasp the intricacies of global finance, but what the author says is detailed and sounds realistic. If he’s right, and if a few things are fixed fairly quickly, we might be on the edge of something that could be most unpleasant, and all around the world.

There is no more money to bail out Wall Street. The next bail out must be for Main Street.
Unfortunately, I think there’s ALWAYS more money to bail out Wall Street. If they can’t find it or steal it they’ll just print it or create cyber-money out of thin air. Most of the money on Wall Street is, and always has been, held by a few families who will never give it up. And they write the rules to suit their needs.

I’ve been thinking lately that with all of the outrage over Mexicans coming to our country and stealing our jobs, why there isn’t more outrage over Republicans allowing Corporations to allow people in other countries to take American jobs. It must be a question of geography and out of sight, out of mind. That’s the only thing that I can figure.

* The republicans who were against extending unemployment benefits?
* The republicans who were against helping 9/11 rescue workers?
* The republicans wanting to eliminate or drastically cut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security?
* The republicans not wanting to close tax loopholes for the wealthy, multinational corporations and big business?
* The teapublicans holding the country hostage over their ideology?
I’m pretty sure that it’s the “I’ve got mine, so y’all fuck off” phenomenon.
