Watering Hole: September 19, 2011 – Energy Fest

This past weekend, I spent 2/3’s of my free time volunteering as a member of the “Parking Authority”, reporting to the “Parking Czar”, and parking cars at the Pennsylvania Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Festival.

The cars were parked a distance from the entrance to the festival so a shuttle was provided.

These horses are Clydesdales and provided the horse power during the afternoon.   The morning shuttle was powered by bay colored Shires.

Bicycle Man was at the festival and he had his “Conference Bike” available.  It’s a six seater which allows for exercise during serious discussions.

It was a beautiful late summer weekend in southeastern Pennsylvania.  As you can see, the leaves have not yet started to turn.

This is our Open Thread.  Feel free to Speak Up on any topic.  Happy Monday      🙂

  1. Sheriff Joe Arpaio Assigns ‘Cold Case Posse’ To Investigate Obama’s Birth Certificate

    Hey, remember the birthers?

Infamous Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio does — which is why he announced a five-person “Cold Case Posse” that will delve into the issue of President Obama’s birth certificate.

The posse follows a request by the Surprise, Arizona Tea Party, who Arpaio met with on August 17. The Surprise Tea Party believes that the long-form birth certificate released by President Obama in April — which put the issue to rest for pretty much everyone — could be a forgery.

“The Surprise Tea Party is concerned,” they wrote, “that no law enforcement agency or other duly constituted government agency has conducted an investigation into the Obama birth certificate to determine if it is in fact an authentic copy of 1961 birth records on file for Barack Obama at the Hawaii Department of Health in Honolulu, or whether it, or they are forgeries.”

“Congress should be ashamed,” Brian Reilly, a spokesman for the Surprise Tea Party, told the right-wing “news” site World Net Daily. “They didn’t even have the backbone to uphold their constitutional oaths of office to initiate this investigation.”

World Net Daily, perhaps the last bastion for birther holdouts (an article on Arpaio also touts the book “Where’s The Birth Certificate?” by WND columnist Jerome Corsi), says that the “Cold Case Posse” will subsist on donations from birthers nationwide.

“This investigation does not involve politics,” Arpaio told WND. “I listen to all the residents of Maricopa County who come to my office with complaints, regardless what their politics are.

He doesn’t listen to everyone. When I was a (long time) resident of Maricopa County, I sent a brief letter to Joe Arpaio suggesting he either resign, retire, or drive his car off a cliff. Unfortunately, he didn’t listen. To. Me.

    Hey, I tried.

    • Arpaio is a nazi, pure and simple.
I could rant for paragraphs but the explanation is simple.
      He runs a concentration camp.
      He’s a nazi.

        • The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Posse has a LOT of volunteers who get a uniform and can ride around in official vehicles. A large number of them patrol the streets of unincorporated urban areas, particularly the three Sun Cities: Sun City, Sun City West, and Sun City Grand (they all have shunned incorporation because the residents think it’s better if the entire of Maricopa County pays for their police and fire rather than they, heaven forbid, should be ‘forced’ to do it for themselves). The three Sun Cities are also, far as I know, free from having to pay school district taxes since there are no school districts within their confines.

Anyway, a great deal of what the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Posse does is low cost and not worth much; ‘grandstanding’ for Sheriff Joe is the most likely reason they pretend to do much of anything beyond the basic routine.

    • frugal: be glad he did not retaliate. He did with the sister of a friend of mine. She ended up moving out of his jurisdiction.

      • I was shortly on my way out anyway, so I wasn’t worried. Had he retaliated, my response was planned: an 8.5×11 ‘poster’ of my one-fingered salute with the words “To Sheriff Joe” tacked onto as many wooden poles and public boards as I could comfortably get to before an early breakfast.

Understand, though, that Joe Arpaio is, in additional to being one of the most complete and total assholes to hold public office anywhere in the country, he’s also a harbinger — a predictor — of things to come if/when the American Fascist Movement completes itself. Arpaio himself is a joke; tens of thousands of Brownshirts acting just like him, however, won’t be quite so ‘funny’.

    • Surprise Tea Party: Investigate Obama’s Birth Certificate, because, you know, the one he released might be a forgery.

But, hey, Sheriff Joe, why not open a Cold Case File on the investigation into 9/11, because, you know, the crimes never were investigated, only the failure of Bush’s intelligence.

  2. I take Posse as German and translate it into English:

    Die Posse: antic, burlesque, farce.

I take all three to be a precise translation of Arpaio’s posse.

  3. Quote of the Day:

“By the time I feed my family, I have maybe $400,000 left over,” – Rep. John Fleming (R-LA), in an interview on MSNBC, on why as a small business owner he can’t afford a tax increase.

    • “By the time I feed my family, I have maybe $400,000 left over,”

When I say “feed my family”, I usually mean paycheck to paycheck. We get paid every two weeks. Is he referring to that amount every week? Every two weeks? Once a month? Or is that his annual income…
Who is he measuring himself up against? Where does he buy his groceries for goodness sake..
These people who make that kind of money really do not have any clue on how the rest of America lives and tries to get by.

      • I want to live in his reality – if he can’t make it on $400,000/year he deserves none of that money.
He wouldn’t know how to maneuver in a supermarket or a farmers market. He is divorced from reality – I despise his attitude and condescension.

      • When he says “feed my family” he means after the Beluga Caviar, Lobsters, Filet Mignon and Dom Perignon…you know, the basics…

    • I know people that don’t have $400 left over at the end of the month.

These people don’t have a clue what poverty looks like in America.

    • I was a commissioned saleperson long enough to know that everybody is always broke – just at different standards of living.

  4. Every single poll shows that the American public overwhelmingly supports higher taxes on the wealthy as part of a package to cut the deficit. The margins are staggering: the NYT poll shows a majority of 74 – 21; even Rasmussen shows a majority of 56 – 34. What Obma proposed this morning is simply where the American people are at. If he keeps at it, if he turns his administration into a permanent campaign for structural fiscal reform, I don’t see how he loses the argument.

      • Did he set them up? Wait until they have painted themselves into the “I made a pledge” corner? Wait until the tea party has effectively taken over the Gop? I feel much more optimistic now that it seems, as a German news anchor said, the Obama Americans have voted for in 2008 is back. I dread nothing more than a Perry win. I have said a number of times, that I was quite content with Obama’s achievements up to now, given the circumstances.

There is still considerable danger that Republicans make it next year, but at least Obama is on the right track again.

        • It’s always nice to hear perspectives from lands that still have a functional press/media. It is, indeed, looking like President Obama let the Reichwhiners creep to the end of a limb and then handed them a saw.

        • He needs the populist message now. Workers that are loosing their jobs in America and watching them get shipped overseas to other countries don’t need Obama to tout Free trade agreements. That isn’t anything that an American worker can, taste, see or feel except when the factory that they are working in closes.

His speech today hits all the right notes. He needs to keep repeating it. Catapulting the TRUTH everywhere he goes. I am content with his achievements as well but then again, I knew he was a centrist. He needs to be progressive now.

          • Instead of “Free Trade Agreements” we need “Fair Trade Agreements”. Insist that overseas factories pay prevailing U.S. wages and abide by U.S. or more stringent environmental standards and workplace safety.

That means goods will cost more.

But more ‘Merikans will be working, thus domestic sales will go up.

    • I tend to think he’s playing it correctly. He knows that the GOoPers won’t pass anything that will help because anything that helps gives Obama a political “win”. So? He offers a modest plan that contains exactly what polling indicates the American electorate wants and the GOoPers will vote it down anyway. The “librul media” will go along with the GOoPers in saying he asked for too much but it doesn’t appear to be working.

  5. Thanks for the post, Cats. It sounds like a great way to spend a day (and the weather looks perfect). I love the big draft horses, too. In the past, the Budweiser Clydesdale team sent for the Rose Festival was stabled right downtown and a co-worker and I would make it a point to get down to see them early in the day, just as they were getting their baths. So beautiful.

There are a number of farms in Oregon on federal land where mechanized equipment is prohibited. They run everything with their teams of horses.

  6. Quote of the Day II:

“I’m under attack all the time. They call me gay, there are death threats… There are times where I’m not thinking as clearly as I should, and in those unclear moments, I always think to myself, ‘Fire the first shot.’ Bring it on. Because I know who’s on our side. They can only win a rhetorical and propaganda war. They cannot win. We outnumber them in this country, and we have the guns … I’m not kidding. They talk a mean game, but they will not cross that line because they know what they’re dealing with. And I have people who come up to me in the military, major named people in the military, who grab me and they go, ‘Thank you for what you’re doing, we’ve got your back.’ They understand that. These are the unspoken things we know, they know,” – an increasingly disturbed and paranoid Andrew Breitbart.

  7. Today’s Reichwing slogan is “CLASS WARFARE”. As nearly as I can tell from a quick scan of the news; SaudiFAUX “News” is pimping the class warfare meme on every show in response to President Obama’s “new” plan. By the time thy get to inSeannity I suspect he’ll spit out a tooth or three.

  8. Indonesian women take to the streets:

The women carried signs that said: “Don’t tell us how to dress, tell them not to rape,” and “My body is not porn, instead it’s your dirty mind.”

    Good on them.

  9. Interestingly enough, the crass warfare of the reichwing is targeting the narrow minded greedy lumpkins who have no class.
Why these tea party goobers think that hedge fund managers will ever have a care for them is beyond my understanding.

    • Everything about them is beyond my understanding but I have learned to predict them to some extent. One can just hit the highlights from FOX and Friends and one will know what every troll on the net will be spewing for the next 24-48 hours. It’s easy enough to tell what they do but the why is a real head-scratcher.

      • This seems like the most logical explanation to me, although the rubes have long believed that the Republics are on their side, in spite of all evidence to the contrary. In those days it didn’t take much effort, because it was easy to scapegoat the colored people and the scum living in cities. (Come to think of it, one of our local transit troll libertarians has frequently referred to the “crime-ridden” cities. Suburbs, apparently, are human civilization’s greatest accomplishment.)

Now the Repubs just feed material to the liars on Fox News, who in turn spew it at the rubes. The final result, spewed by those rubes, is usually a matter of a phrase or two they’ve heard often enough that they manage to memorize it.

        • Recently heard comment :
“Everything will all be better when the black man is out of office.”
I hope I can go 5 more days without letting loose a verbal barrage on the ignorant little man.
          🙂

          • I guess it’s only okay for white guys like Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II to spend all the money and make this place a horrible place to live (unless you’re in the top 2%).

…and Obama hasn’t even done any of that.

      • Consider the two screen shots. One from Fox from a couple of minutes ago, and the other from CNN.

        Fox: http://i.imgur.com/TNcLI.jpg
        CNN: http://i.imgur.com/VKJY8.jpg

Fox has as their top story, in large font: “Obama Vows to Battle for Tax Hikes”. Juxtaposed with this article are “related” articles with the following headlines:

“GOP Candidates React to White House Deficit Plan” – Nothing like giving them all some free press. Let me guess. They didn’t like it.

“Power Play: Dems Balk at Tax Plan” – Ah, the proverbial Fox way of trying to create some infighting among Dems (don’t fall for it anyone) and make it seem like Obama is out of touch in his own party.

“GOP to Obama: Approach on Jobs All Wrong” – And this is news how? That’s all the GOP ever says.

“Chicago Editorial Writer Suggests Obama Step Down After First Term” – This op-ed seems more about a former Clinton supporter still having trouble letting go. Nothing to do with this deficit package.

“Dow falls more than 200 points” – despite it only being down about half that much (around 77 points of this writing). But Fox wants to suggest that it’s related. (It’s more likely related to the CNN lead story about the looming default in Greece.)

CNN, on the other hand, only has a small headline about Obama’s 3-trillion dollar proposal in debt cuts. They offered it in the context of the world-wide debt crisis. CNN’s big story was calling out the facts in Texas (despite candidate Perry’s claims to the contrary).

The sad reality is that a casual visitor to the Fox site will connect all the dots that Roger Ailes wants you to connect. It’s all anti-Obama, all the time.

        • Oh, and I should have added, that even the main headline “Obama Vows Battle for Tax Hikes” is just so typical Fox. It’s a battle. It makes it sound like that’s all he wants to do and he’s willing to fight for it.

          Orwell was right.

        • But but but, Fux is fair and balanced! They are the only news channel that even tries to tell both sides of the story!!

          *wretch* I’m done channeling morans.

    • Tea Partiers don’t think about hedge fund managers…they are focused on those lazy unemployed welfare queens that do nothing but take their hard earned money with their entitlements and free food stamps and they should just get off their lazy butts and get a job like the rest of us nevermind the fact that the factories are all closed now because them unions demanded such high wages that the company decided to relocate overseas where it only had to pay kids a nickle a day to work in a sweatshop so that’s why we gotta cut taxes for them rich folks cuz they create jobs and unless we cut taxes and regulations they’ll ship my job overseas but hey, at least I got my guns.

      • Tea Partiiers remind me of an abused wife taking out the pain of her abuse on her kids who then take it out on the younger kids who in turn take it out on the dog. Instead of addressing the real problem, they ( the tea partiers) make excuses for the hedge fund managers ( the abusers) and give them a free pass: ” He beats me because he loves me. He didn’t mean it, he just let his temper get away from him.” All the while the hedge fund managers take advantage of the tea partiers – gambling the milk money away in a high stakes game of craps.

    • Modesto worked that way, at least back in the day. People worked massive overtime through the canning season and then spent the rest of the year (the bulk of the year, really) living on savings and rocking chair money. Sadly, the processor i worked for was in business year around and only the most junior employee spent any time laid off.

A person could make a shitload of money working 12 hour shifts, seven days a week.

  10. Fuck you, shit head. Go straight to your hell. Apparently this is ANOTHER repiggie doctor — thank goodness he’s running Subway and UPS shops, and not treating his patients anymore.

    • Whoa! did you hear that?

His net income is around $600,000, but by the time he feeds his family he’s only got $400,000 left.

His grocery budget is $200,000 a frickken year!!!

      • A TPM reader makes this comment:

I’m pretty sure Rep. Fleming’s comments make no sense whatsoever.

Wouldn’t the Buffett Tax only count toward households (or perhaps individuals, I’m not sure how it’s written) that report more than $1 million in income? That isn’t $1 million in revenue; that’s $1 million in income, which means profit after expenses. Fleming is claiming that after he pays all his business expenses he only has $600,000 to feed his family, etc. Which means, as I understand it, that his actual income is less than $1 million and therefore the Buffett Tax wouldn’t apply.

He also counts that 600k toward investing in new employees, btw, which implies that there’s literally no distinction between his business’ earnings and budget and his family’s personal income and budget. Which also makes no sense. Is there nobody capable of asking these people coherent fiscal questions?

What do we expect from a phlegming idiot?

    • A comment that I left at Huffpost.

{“…Class warfare never created a job”

      Maybe, Maybe not.
      But the middle and working classes never sent my job to a foreign country for cheap labor.}

  11. Speaking of the interwebbingtubes – wonder if House is having connection issues – he’s not ‘liked’ in which generally tells us he’s busy but ‘looked in’!

ok…and I.P. – where are you these weeks?

[yes. I’m the ‘hall monitor’] /

    • Oh, sorry, I’ve been in and out all day. I must have forgot to hit the ‘like’ button, because I was studying that contraption in the photo. 😀

  12. More info on the airplane that crashed into the crowd in Reno over the weekend: It had “modern technology” in it (more than the usual, it seems), a flight data recorder, and a video camera facing outward.

      • No blood or guts, but a rather close view of the plane going right over the head of the camera holder, and into the crowd a short distance away. Apparently, there were several memory cards found in the wreckage, so who knows what they may find.

      • studies of blackboxes reveal that by an overwhelming margin, the last words on them are, “oh shit!”

That’s how they’ll know the pilot wasn’t my old college buddy fifty years ago, back in ’61. Mitty’s last word(s) would have been, “cocksuckerucka”. 🙂

  13. Boner’s not orange, he’s a Pinko!

Tea Partier: ‘John Boehner Is A Socialist’ (VIDEO)

David Lewis, a 26 year old Tea Party activist believes the man he is mounting a primary challenge against, Speaker of the House Rep. John Boehner (R-OH), is a “socialist.”

“Well, John Boehner is a socialist. I’m not calling him names,” said Lewis, in response to Cavuto’s rebuttal that the bill Boehner voted for was already doomed. “Here is someone that refuses to phase out Social Security.”

    • These gomers have absolutely no clue what the word actually means. I got into a long and fruitless blog conversation with one of our local “libertarians”, who repeatedly claimed that the city council was full of socialists. When pinned down about the word, he eventually came up with what sounded like the definition of “totalitarian”, a definition that in turn required us to believe that none of them were elected (which they are) or if they were it was because all the elections are rigged. Presented with a dictionary definition of socialism, he tried to claim that by bending and twisting the definition and his own words — he was right.

Their actual definition of socialist seems to be: anyone who is doing something i don’t like.

      • Ask any one of them to define Socialism, Fascism, Communism, Marxism, or any other “isms” commonly considered to be evil and anti-American and five will get you ten that each and all will equate them all. They have no concept, and worse, no interest in comprehension or even reality. As you suggest, ‘all dem isms is da same in da sense dat I don’t like none o’ dem.’

    • Her god-given destiny to be POTUS has distracted her from her customary vigilance as a member of the House. Face it, Zooey, she’s way too important to be worrying about trivial shit like that.

Remember, she had 600 foster children and none of them ever bullied anyone, and only a few committed suicide.

    • That’s just part of the story. The question was asked in the wake of the mother of a teenager who committed suicide due to bullying hand delivered a petition with 200,000 signatures, most from her district, to Batscat’s office asking simply that she would speak and acknowledge the crisis. Needless to say; she’s too busy campaigning to have met with the woman or even have a top aid meet with her. The petition was accepted by a clerk with no comment.

      • .
Not to make light of the situation – she was busy meeting with fictitious women whose daughters were rendered ‘mentally retarded’ after have the HPV vaccine.

How is it that her district just doesn’t see how utterly divorced from reality BatCrazy is?

        • There’s a very long answer to that and, living mere blocks outside her district, I can provide the whole thing but I’ll try to just hit the bullet points.

          1. She’s a “good Christian lady”.
          2. Some of her biggest backers are preachers who campaign on her behalf from the pulpit.
          3. The local press/media can’t seem to find the will to condemn her because, with her large national profile, they think she makes poor little Minnesota more relevant. Even when they cover some of the insane shit she says it tends to be framed as; “the outspoken Representative Bachmann deflects another attack from the far-left”.
          4. Many, if not most, of the people in her district are unsophisticated (sometimes that’s a euphemism for “dumb as dirt” but not in this case). The only “news” they pay attention too are sports, weather, and maybe crop reports. They get their political views from campaign commercials, slogans, and the previously mentioned preachers.
          5. These unsophisticated people are not likely to have ever so much as had a conversation with anyone the slightest bit different than they are. No urban dwellers. No intellectuals. And, most definitely, no minorities. Their contempt is bred by ignorance more than malice.

        • From an op-ed piece in the rag, the New York Post:

Bachmann is bright, articulate and accomplished, an avatar of motherhood and apple pie in a power suit. But she’s going to have to radically improve her game if she’s to continue as a viable candidate.

Uh, er, in which universe is this? Nothing about her being an ignorant, fanatical, dishonest and insane person? Oh, that’s right. It’s the Post.

  14. Wow! President Obama’s debt proposals have really enervated the paid trolls. Our humble local paper got over a thousand comments, something I have not seen before, on the story and now their server has crashed and all comments are disabled. The vast majority of these comments, so far as I could tell before the server crashed, are from a number of people who have screen names that only differ by one letter/number. “Jackpot” started the day at “Jackpot 7” and is now on “Jackpot 43”. I’m a little pissed that I get temporarily banned when I forget the rules and call Batscat Bachmann “Crazy Shelly”.

Needless to say, most of said comments are some variation of “we told you that ni99er was promoting class warfare”. I’m actually looking forward to the “real” trolls showing up after they get their talking points (marching orders?) from SaudiFAUX “News” tonight. I think the funniest ones, so far, are those that say “who’s going to pay for all the government jobs Obama is creating”. This, of course, is so far from reality that one can refrain from comment because anyone making such a claim is unreachable.

  15. I ran across a story a few days ago about how the trend towards federal jobs being outsourced to “contractors” has actually cost three times as much as maintaining the federal workers in their jobs. That’s because the public contractors think they can, and will, and do, screw the government.
I can corroborate all this, but I’m going to at least wait till I’m laid off before speaking my piece…

    • Wanna hear the part that pisses me off? No one, from President Obama on down, is phrasing the debate with the line; “we have to raise taxes in order to pay our soldiers”.

        • Since I’m always writing the President, pissing and moaning about how he has handled things in the past, I decided to write him today to thank him for standing up for “We the People.” We should all give him positive feedback when it’s due — in addition to griping him out when he messes up. It’s easy to forget the positive feedback.

In that positive feedback, standing up for our service members can and should be included!

          • But what if they (the service members) are facing poverty, the lack of jobs, and are being co-opted into joining the military to feed perpetual war?

            • I know. I’m sure this is happening more and more today. It’s always been true of a certain population, but it’s bleeding over into the middle class kids who thought they’d be in college — not war.

          • That’s a very good idea and I think I’ll follow your lead, Zooey. I must admit that I felt really gratified when President Obama proposed a tax credit for people who actually hire other people in his last big speech. I’ve been sending that idea to every lawmaker I can think of for months. It seems so simple to me. If proposed increases are combined with a new “loophole” for hiring people? That should shoot down all the “we can’t tax job creators” crap.

        • Not quite the same. While “Joe’s” name is actually Sam and he isn’t really a plumber; at least their is a real human being who represents “Joe”. I’m firmly convinced that Crazy Shelly’s distraught mother is merely a figment of Shelly’s fevered imagination.

          • Heh, my mom had a standard response to the neighborhood ladies who expressed confusion about their inability to lose weight when they “ate like birds.”

She’d say under her breath to such a statement, “Yeah, vultures.” 😆

            • Classic! I think I would have liked your Mom. It also reminds me of the time when a farmer of my acquaintance tried raising emus. They were so personable that he couldn’t stand butchering them but what I remember is watching them swallowing whole apples. Deer chew them up a bit but emus? Gulp! Gone!

          • I’ve always thought that the best response for road kill is to, if anything, toss the carcass off the road for the safety of scavengers. Although, I did hit a wild turkey once and put it out of its misery and took it home. It was delicious and I don’t feel at all bad for the vultures.

  16. Damn! I ran out of replies.

Zooey. As you know, I’m fond of birds in every way. I’ve raised them, rescued them, hunted them and watched them to my endless delight. I’ve even seriously considered getting a parrot, myna, or other talking bird but I would have to give up on cats and I’m now old enough that most talking birds would outlive me. But? Those emus were a great joy even though I only got to visit them occasionally. I liked them better than a whole lot of people I’ve known.

    • I love birds. I’ve also considered some sort of parrot, but worry about how I’d feel about it being caged. What would you recommend, pete? The love birds are sooooo pretty, but the smaller parrots are quite intriguing.

I don’t like caging animals, but I also don’t like them pooping freely. It is a problem.

      • How would your dog feel about sharing the place with a bird?
Besides eating as an hors d’oeuvre.

Do you have places, in your yard, for bird feeders?

        • I wouldn’t have a bird until I was better established in a place. This lovely place is only temporary, unfortunately.

My dog totally ignores cats, so I can imagine that she would ignore birds as well.

I could introduce bird feeders in this yard, but I would feel bad about luring them in, only to (possibly) leave once winter sets in. It doesn’t seem fair.

          • That’s one of the beauties of birds. They can simply fly away to find a new food source. Come spring you could set up a feeder for the seasonal migrants. A hummingbird feeder and some fresh fruit would bring in some visitors. If you make it an occasional thing then you don’t have to worry about avian dependence.

            • I did have 1 brother who was a idiot or autistic savant. As time passed, he decided to worship the Yankees. From about 11, he could cite the stats of any player as updated after each game. This included RBIs, Errors, Hits, Hits & Bases, Game Scores and the dates of said games. I and my youngest sister managed to share 30%/30%/40% in a home purchase, He still did not understand that we siblings could not pay his property taxes and assessments on the property. We were fortunate that the agent who found the house laid down .the law and we gathered and attached his earnings only for the taxes and assessments. That was after the house was in destruction mode because he was hooked up with a hooker. The walls were painted with psychedelia in the living area and two of three bedrooms. Sister and I moved in and evicted the low life and restored the house. We also (with sisters husand) installed a new AC. We told him that if he ever entered the criminal environment, we with a 60% holding could sell the house from under him and he would e pushing a shopping card on the freeway from then on. That straightened him out and since then he has lead a normal life. I send him a check for his birthday which should pay for a meal at Lawry’s He lives in California close to LA (Mentone.) in a large home on large acreage for the area.

    • Indeed. Birds in cages make me sad too. I spend enough time at home that I could probably let a captive reared bird roam the apartment and clean up the poop before any permanent damage was done but even that would be galling and, as I said, I would have to give up on cats. Still, the big road block to me is their lifespan. Most of the “best” birds live 50-100 years and I wouldn’t consider one any more than I would consider fathering a child at my age. It just doesn’t seem fair. Plus, after a couple years, I might start talking like the hypothetical bird. I’ve seen the “crazy bird ladies” on TV and would not want to join them!

Another old friend of mine caught a young crow in one of his traps. He was so surprised by how it acted when he sought to release it that he took it to a vet, had it’s smashed wing amputated, and adopted it as a pet. He called it “TDB” for “that damned bird” and they remained fast friends for nearly 30 years. TDB lived in the garage, Learned to talk, learned to imitate a few radio announcers, and even learned to imitate the static from my friend’s police scanner. I’ve met very few critters that were smarter than TDB.

      • Our local Mockers are quite comical – one lives near a fire station – yes even when it’s away it has the engine start up down perfectly!

Years ago there was one that would fly, in the night, tree to tree imitating a car alarm!

          • One of my earliest memories stems from spending our summers at the cabin next to Lars and Lena. Dad and Uncle Henry were enjoying a highball on the porch when I heard “Lena” laughing up in a big elm tree. Since Dad and Uncle Henry were both smart asses, they sent me to get a blanket so that we could catch “Lena” when she jumped down. I dutifully procured the blanket and then suffered about five minutes of laughter before they explained that “Lena” was a catbird.

        • They are amazing creatures and why not? They’ve spent 65 million years evolving from what were already the most evolved creatures, dinosaurs, on the planet. I’ve only been able to use the joke a couple times but, when I hear someone call someone else a “bird brain”, I say “the day that a human flaps his arms and flies away I’ll concede that birds are stupid”.

      • Thanks, Ebb. I think that the part that pisses me off is that, even while the Reichwhiners will call them “librul” no matter what, they seem to sacrifice a good bit of credibility trying to disown the label “librul media”.

Here’s a newsflash: so long as the paper features anyone but Lushbo, mAnn Coulter, and other assorted Reichwhiners; SaudiFAUX “News” and their worshipers will still label them “librul media”. Their embrace of T-Paw and Crazy Shelly is just the tip of the iceberg. They have a distinctly conservative editorial policy because, and only because, the national media endlessly spews the “librul Minnesota” crap. I will continue to do all in my power to inform them that they aren’t allowed to be “fair and balanced” because SaudiFAUX “News” has corrupted the term for their sole use.

  17. I think my son lost his innocence today., at least some of it. He has been studying segregation and the civil rights movement. The story of the students who sat in at the lunch counter in Greensboro NC fascinates him to the extent that we have to discuss it every day. Today he realized that he would likely not have been served either because, in his words, “I’m kind of black.” I’m glad he’s 12 and never noticed prejudice before. I’m scared he is totally unprepared to deal with just how ugly some folks can be.
