Morning Edition tickled me this morning with some music from All Songs Considered — songs that cause you to immediately crank the radio up to 11 when they come on. Not too surprisingly, their list and my list have few common entries. Since I’m old, my list is really long, but this one bubbled right up to the surface. Oh, and that one. I couldn’t make up my mind.
Well it is Nigel Tufnell Day!!
Ooh I see Johnette! xx
Oh someone play some Spinal Tap – I have to go for now.
Ok keeping in the Remembrance Day Theme – I’m going to get these out of my system…
Mike Harding has a keen and personal eye when it comes to the common man and war. His father he never knew, shot down over Belgium in a Lancaster bomber in WW2.
He wrote Bomber’s Moon for him – ‘Chalky White’ is his father in the song
Then there is this about the first day on the Somme, July 1st 1916. Battalions of volunteers, all from the same town went ‘over the top’ together and died together in minutes. Accrington was among the worst of all.
The Accrington pals
And lastly not from Mike though he did sing it often An Australian WW1 song, the Band played Waltzing Matilda
Mike Harding though is known primarily as a comedian…. and a poet…. to lighten the mood. 🙂
Ackroyd’s Funeral
And finally Battlefield Band and a beautiful song about an event in WW2, the Scots Highland Division captured in 1940 in France and how that affected them, spending 5 years in POW camps. They survived, but they felt shame and the neglect of their countrymen.
The Beaches of St Valery
This one is good loud
Wow I thought that was UFO – a highly unerrated outfit IMHO… their Strangers in the Night double live is awesome.
Platform shoes!
One to turn up to 11? Here’s one from the band the kids in band liked.
Chicago – South California Purples
I’ve had a bit of a journey through youtube this afternoon. It started when we cleaned our house today. I will always put on music while we clean and years ago I always played bluegrass music. It sped me up! Today I limited the play list to bluegrass for the first time in ages.
After the cleaning was done, I got started on youtube with this classic done by – Gillian Welch and David Rawlings I’ll Fly Away
Which led to Dan Tyminski / Soggy Bottom Boys with Alison Krauss and Jerry Dougla
And then bumped into Three Pickers – Doc Watson Ricky Skaggs and Earl Scruggs
….
I like the Soggy Bottom Boys 🙂
I would have never imagined David Gilmour with Spinal Tap but, here it is
After a walk with the dogs, the Youtube path veered off bluegrass and into folkland.
The best songe I’ve heard that describes religion as I see it. Iris Dement – Let the Mystery Be
Emmylou Harris and Iris Dement with a classic Carter family song, Wildwood Flower.
I came across a tribute to Townes van Zandt with Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle where they played If I Needed You. Toward the end the video switches to a Townes van Zandt video.
And then I found The Ballad of Ira Hayes sung by Townes van Zandt.
…
Judy Collins – Someday Soon
Another subtle turn on the Youtube highway brought me to Loudon Wainwright III. He is one funny song writer. From Rufus is a Tit Man when Rufus was a baby to The Paul Krugman blues just couple years ago.
How could I not be in Loudon’s driveway on Youtube and not drop by and visit Kate and Ann McGariggle. Sure enough, I found a favourite Kate and Ann song, Complainte pour St. Catherine.
Kate and Ann are terrific Canadian folk singers which reminded me of seeing David Francey, an import to Canada, and we are glad to have him. His songs tend to be similar, musically speaking. His stories about the songs are terrific. Here is Lucky Man with the story before it.
Well, that was my Youtube journey this afternoon. Turns out that I didn’t really stray too far from my starting point.
Here is a new starting point for another journey on Youtube – Cornershop with Staging The Plaguing
Rufus is a tit man? Say what?

The Flame Still Burns
Turning it up to 11 with Motorhead and the Ace of Spades….
The Head and the Heart – Lost In My Mind
The Black Keys – Lonely Boy
Reaching back to the second wave of metal….. these are some tight spandex pants…. classic!
Saxon and ‘Strangers in the Night’
Should have posted this one on Halloween….. Bruce Dickinson and Iron Maiden….
Another Little by Little, but this time by Radiohead.
AndytheTurtle has a tape measure he is measuring.. 😉 He is 45″ tall.
Soon he’ll be 70″ like me, and you’ll wonder where the years went. 🙂
*sigh* I know. TommytheTurtle and I are going camping in the teeth of a winter storm warning tomorrow up near the North Cascades highway – kid’s not fazed at all….

good morning EV. I’m happy that Europe is still there.
Nwoldguy, I get up for music, try and squeeze a song or two in, then I’m off to bed again. I just like it and you all and have missed too many music nights.
Jesus H Christ gotta come back and lay this down for you.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvw0vbewH_Q
Who can sleep? That is amazing.
Yo-Yo Ma does bluegrass. My life is nearing its end in total bliss. Well maybe I’ll hang around for the next album. “The Goat Sessions” YES!
Bluegrass has never been my thing, but this might do it for me.
That’s the wonderful thing about music, and especially played by Masters. Give it a chance, put aside your biases, and there are worlds to explore and cherish.
Another lesson learned…
Again, Good night
Goodnight, nwoldguy. Thank you.
