Watering Hole: Tuesday, August 28, 2012 – On The Road

Nonewhere and I are on a road trip from the east coast to the west coast.  Today, we are spending some time in Bend, OR.  For the first time in 7 days, I heard a variety birds chirping outside and I am loving it.  There were no bird songs in South Dakota or Montana.  The only birds that I heard in Washington were crows and a few blackcap chick-a-dees.  On Thursday, we will be back on the road again and heading back home.

This is our Open Thread.  Please do Speak Up and share what’s on your mind today.

    • Oops sorry I repeated you because I hadn’t read all the way through. Can you imagine that blowhard believes he’d have the physical capability to run. Romney had to cancel one day for exhaustion. That’s odd too.

    • Remember the hysteria of the right because 2 New Black Panthers were outside on polling place in a black neighborhood. Looks like we need to counteract these bastards.

    • I read that last night, I don’t get it, it is really funny. But I don’t know what the point of it was… to humanize the Romneybot?

    • Jason Linkins:

What’s really impressive about the column is how awesomely effortless it all is. Brooks just straight up opened a Word document, spat a bunch of dull quips into it, and handed it in to whoever is in charge of turning it into a newspaper column. You could do this, too: start with something like, “What’s the deal with sweetbreads? They’re not sweet, they’re not bread …” and then you write 500 more words about thymus glands, give it to some guy at The New York Times and then that guy thanks you and he hands you a bunch of money and then it’s off to the Aspen Ideas Festival or whatever.

  1. From Gail Collins in the NYT:

“… Mitt Romney was born on March 12, 1947, in Ohio, Florida, Michigan, Virginia and several other swing states. He emerged, hair first, believing in America, and especially its national parks. He was given the name Mitt, after the Roman god of mutual funds, and launched into the world with the lofty expectation that he would someday become the Arrow shirt man.

Romney was a precocious and gifted child. He uttered his first words (“I like to fire people”) at age 14 months, made his first gaffe at 15 months and purchased his first nursery school at 24 months. The school, highly leveraged, went under, but Romney made 24 million Jujubes on the deal.

Mitt grew up in a modest family. His father had an auto body shop called the American Motors Corporation, and his mother owned a small piece of land, Brazil. He had several boyhood friends, many of whom owned Nascar franchises, and excelled at school, where his fourth-grade project, “Inspiring Actuaries I Have Known,” was widely admired….

… He had a pet rock, which ran away from home because it was starved of affection. He bought a mood ring, but it remained permanently transparent. His ability to turn wine into water detracted from his popularity at parties…

After his governorship, Romney suffered through a midlife crisis, during which he became a social conservative. This prepared the way for his presidential run. He barely won the 2012 Republican primaries after a grueling nine-month campaign, running unopposed. At the convention, where his Secret Service nickname is Mannequin, Romney will talk about his real-life record: successful business leader, superb family man, effective governor, devoted community leader and prudent decision-maker. If elected, he promises to bring all Americans together and make them feel inferior.”

  2. Does anyone else think it’s a bit risky to allow Chris Christy to do the keynote speech at the RNC tonight? His mouth tends to get him in trouble.

  3. The Wall Street Journal reports that Republicans are trying to gin up some excitement with a stunt:

“Buried deep in the convention schedule released Monday is a vague reference to a mystery speaker scheduled for the event’s final evening. “To Be Announced” has a prime speaking slot late in the Thursday program.

…The only other speakers to follow “To Be Announced” will be Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and Mr. Romney himself, suggesting that the unnamed guest may appear during the 10 p.m. hour when the networks all will be broadcasting the convention.

… The line-up features a long list of governors and senators, including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio. Former presidential candidates Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich are on the agenda, as are former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Former Vice President Dick Cheney and former President George W. Bush have said they won’t be attending, but a video from Mr. Bush is on Wednesday’s program.”

My money is on The Wasilla Whackjob.

  4. Notes From the Bubble:

“We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact checkers,” – Romney pollster Neil Newhouse.

  5. Right. He’s aloof, out-of-touch, snobbish, and he lies a lot.

What else is there to know?

Adviser: Voters will get to know Romney

TAMPA — Advisers to Mitt Romney don’t think voters really know their candidate — and that’s what this week’s convention is for.”He’s not the back-slapping politician we’re used to,” said Romney senior adviser Ron Kaufman at a morning forum sponsored by Politico.

    • They’re catapulting the propaganda that Mittens is a nice guy. So I’m listening to KPOJ online, and Ed’s talking about this. Then the news break comes on and ABC news is on the bandwagon, talking with former co-workers from when Mitt was Guv. Jeebus.

    • They are using cold hearted persons (Ann and Christie) attempting to impart the “warmth and kindness” of the wooden toy that is Mittens…
      (laughable)

    • Heh, I was just gonna post on this…

“The Arctic sea ice extent [Sunday] fell below its previous record low and is currently losing frozen sea at the rate of ~29,000 square miles (~75,000 square kilometers) a day. That’s equivalent to an area the size of South Carolina every 24 hours. … Note that this year’s record low was set more than three weeks earlier than the 2007 record. And summer isn’t over yet. There’s more melting to come.”
      http://www.motherjones.com/blue-marble/2012/08/arctic-ice-shatters-melt-record

Michael Lemonick explains how all that ice isn’t just ice, it’s part of our defense against the sun – and its loss accelerates climate change:

“Arctic ice, whether on land or on the sea, is a powerful reflector that bounces a lot of sunlight back into space rather than letting it warm the Earth. When that ice melts, it exposes the darker ground or water underneath, turning the region into an energy absorber rather than a reflector. Sea ice is especially vulnerable to melting, and over the past 30 years or so there’s been a downward trend in sea ice coverage in summer. The result is a feedback loop that accelerates global warming, with melting ice leading to more warming of the water below leading to more melting. The Arctic is warming at nearly twice the rate of the rest of the globe, largely due to those feedback loops. In addition, recent research shows that the loss of sea ice cover may be contributing to extreme weather events throughout the Northern Hemisphere, and may be partly responsible for major cold air outbreaks and paralyzing snowstorms in the northeastern U.S. and western Europe during the past few years.”

  6. rickklein @ rickklein : awkward start? “Romney, Romney” chant just met with louder “Ron Paul, Ron Paul” on #2012GOP floor

    heh

    • “.. struck by TWO cars…” ??

“Bubba, I think I hurt him but…. oh wait he’s getting up again… Hank git him with your big rig!”

    • Ghillie suits are a type of full-body clothing made to resemble heavy foliage and used to camouflage military snipers.

“He probably would not have been very easy to see at all,”

Um…. isn’t that the purpose of camouflage?

Most telling though: “alcohol may have been a factor.” Isn’t it always?

      • It sounds like he was actually in the road when he was hit. In a cammo suit. Even if the young ladies, who I hope don’t suffer unduly, were reckless and blind drunk I still think the guy would qualify for a Darwin Award. If the first vehicle he jumped in front of had contained a tipsy redneck he probably would have been shot or run down on purpose.

    • I skimmed the energy bit – not grounded in the facts and in cases deliberately misleading.

Then I glanced at the bit on ‘American exceptionalism’ – I couldn’t get past the sentence about being unique in history without gagging (without saying why…. the phrase comes from Joe Stalin and he was not being complimentary)

    • I really don’t understand how anyone could read that tripe without feeling ill much less think; “hey! That sounds like a great idea. U.S.A! U.S.A! U.S…”.

For that matter, I don’t understand why they always shout down the slightest dissent with their “U.S.A.” chants. Hecklers? O.K. It’s still petty, silly, and jingoistic but constructive dissent is, unless my American history teacher just gave me an A to get rid of me, the very foundation of this country. These freaks would have handed Paul Revere over to the Red Coats while singing “Rule Britannia”.

  8. Mark Thoma nails the GOP’s self-defeating, ideological hostile meme:

” If there’s any policy Republicans ought to be able to support, it’s infrastructure spending. It’s inherently a supply-side policy, it helps to promote future economic growth, and it’s an investment with large, positive net benefits. But Republicans see a “we won’t build that” approach to infrastructure spending, an approach that is harmful to our prospects for recovery and to our prospects for future economic growth, as a way to reclaim the presidency.”

  9. Could Zooey or someone else with the magic keys to the kingdom remove my misdirected posts from Jane’s birthday memorial for her nephew? I would blame my cat for stepping on the keyboard, I have carefully explained that she’s not qualified to operate a computer but you know how cats are, but I just got careless while clicking between tabs. Thanks!

    • Everything is fine, parts of our case were actually funny. It was just all the sad stories that I sat through first. One was actually sort of uplifting. A young hispanic boy had been caught with alcohol and committed a petty theft. He had completed his court ordered counseling and English classes (the court had felt some of his actions were due to cultural unfamiliarity). The judge advised the young man that Virginia had invested $10K in him and wanted him to stay here and become a productive citizen. 🙂

  10. I REALLY hate it when I wait around for someone to come fix something in the apartment, and they never bother to show up. I’m getting a bad feeling about this place.

    • It’s in the same league as spending an hour and a half on three buses for a routine doctor visit and arriving to find that she is out sick. And I probably got infected with all sorts of nasty “kid germs” too!

But? The fall/winter line from my favorite brewery is in stock. Even if the rather high alcohol content doesn’t kill off the “kid germs” I won’t care.

    • That is maddening. I have a real nice rental house if you’re interested and won’t mind some leftover police tape.

      • And the meth wallpaper? 😉 I appreciate the offer, but my six month lease means I’m settled through winter, which is a good thing. I just hope this window is fixed before the rain starts. Oy…I can treat adults like children, if necessary, but I’m hoping it doesn’t go that way.

  11. Let’s play Jeopardy.

    And the answer is:

“Ann Romney, Chris Christie and Isaac”

Come up with your questions that fit this as an answer. The category is open so anything goes.

(Saw those three names are part of a headline, and it just seemed like a punch-line waiting for a setup.)

    Have fun!

  12. Rmoney easily gets the 1144 delegate votes needed to officially become his party’s presidential nominee.

Wasn’t it just a couple of months ago when Tweety and other political pundits, mostly on the left and puppets for our overlords telling us Rmoney might not even receive enough delegate votes to become the party’s nominee and how the republican convention could be a brokered convention?

Sorry, lately I have been very suspicious of some of the considered ‘progressive’ voices in the media. I mentioned Tweety yesterday. I’ll mention Lawrence O’Donnell again, who once again was pushing a strong narrative that Rmoney/Ryan can’t win on his program last night.

My suspicion is this: Matthews, Schultz, O’Donnell and others all read from a script, one that must need approval from corporate head quarters. They all have a role to play. They are entertainers in a sense, just like Rush Limbaugh. Do we honestly know how they personally feel inside about this election? They are all part of the 1%, meaning they all have something to gain with a Rmoney presidency as do their corporate bosses and the shareholders as well.

The progressive media seems to be more focused on the Rmoney birth certificate flap and racism, perhaps they would serve their viewers better by focusing on other facts and arguments that might persuade an unhappy Obama supporter or an independent voter instead of complaining about something Rmoney said or whining about all of the lies the Rmoney campaign and the pro Rmoney superpacs ads are launching.

Tweety and others seemed astonished and amazed by these tactics. Really? Quit whining about it and hit the airwaves with facts to dispute the lies. Already it seems Obama is on the defense and the liberal media is crying foul. We really need some political balls on our side. Some say Tweety showed some balls when he went after RNC head, Priebus on Morning Joe, I was encouraged by this until I saw Tweety later smiling and laughing, he is just entertaining, playing the lefts version of Geraldo and relishing all the attention he is getting from other MSNBC cable hosts. I’m so glad I have Current and Link TV.

    • Hope I don’t sound too conspiratorial….I just see the fix is in and we as a country are going to suffer greatly at the hands of Rmoney/Ryan and the republican party.

      • and I’m really starting to see the left/right paradigm. Our two party system is broken and corrupt and the media….both sides just play their roles in keeping we the people distracted, angry and divided while those in the 1% club continue to enjoy the spoils of this and rigged financial system.

        • It does seem that way at times, doesn’t it IC

After the SCOTUS handed the ‘win’ to Baby-Bush I’ve been a bit skeptical.
(having never thought in my lifetime the SCOTUS was in for a fix)

    • On the other hand; CNN appears to have a new policy of answering lying GOoPers with “that’s just not true” (and documenting why it’s not true) instead of the usual policy of letting the liars lie without question and ending the segment with “we’ll have to leave it at that”. Enough different hosts, including Wolfie, have done it in recent days that it gives me a little, tiny, miniscule hope that the “librul media” might be remembering their function.

I’m sure it’s just a coincidence but this phenomenon seemed to appear about the same time that the foreign media got their first good look at Mittens and shamed the “librul media” by reporting that he’s full of shit.

Another encouraging sign, for what polls are worth, is that there are surprisingly few people being polled who call themselves “undecided” while President Obama seems to be slowly gaining ground.

  13. I have a perfectly ripened tomato and zucchini calling my name, so I better go take care of that delicious situation. I guess I’ll be around for live-blogging the gas bags tonight. If I care enough, I’ll even do a separate post. 😉

      • If I didn’t need a ‘split’, i.e., ergonomic keyboard, I could get one for free at work. The boss even searched for my old ergonomic keyboard (which he had replaced shortly before the office moved), but it must have been dumped in the move.

        • I used to have one of those — loved it! I might still have my old one in the storage unit, but I’m not sure it will work after being in there for all this time. I can check it when I get it unearthed, and if it works you’ll have a backup!

  14. Did anyone else just see the really long commercial about the black female repiggie from Utah? *puke*

Oh, it’s the same person who’s speaking now. She’s delusional.

  15. I don’t know if I can watch any of the RNC shameless liars and the entire “We Built It” utter bullshit.

Maybe I’ll join the live blog if I can work up a taste for bile.

  16. Some woman was just speaking, with a massive chip on her shoulder, about starting her own business because she was so inspired by the burden of her autistic son. She and her husband worked hard and never took anything from anyone, except for some obvious government contracts (which she didn’t identify as such). And Sonny boy just finished his first year of college. He succeeded because he worked hard, just like mummy and daddy.

Of course, the son had the benefit (like mine) of extra taxpayer money going toward his education, but never mind that detail. Funny how some people are grateful, and some people just get pissed off and entitled.

My son completed two years of college, BTW, but then he encountered issues that most adults with autism experience and left school. This woman’s son is in the clear, although I wish him the best. Disappointing mummy might not be a good idea here.

  17. Isaac has touched the SE corner of LA, but will gain power for another 12-15 hours while it’s over water. It won’t be as bad as Katrina, but it’s not a little one either. Lots of water.

    • A friend of mine moved back to NOLA last year after living through the evacuation from Katrina. She sent me a text the other day wondering why the hell she moved back. I thought she was packed and headed to Chicago but she appears to be sticking it out. She’s not only back in NOLA, she’s living in Bywater, which is a mouse fart away from the Lower Ninth. Fingers crossed for her.

      • Yeah, I’d be wondering that about now. The wind on this one won’t blow her away, but given the way NO is situated, water is the issue.

I hope she remains safe and dry.

  18. So, the GOP’s platform calls for applying the 14th Amendment Citizenship status upon the unborn. Would that equally apply to the unborn of illegal immigrants, or are there some God-given rights that do not apply to those born outside our country?

I’ve gotta shorten that to 140 chars. 🙂

  19. Well, The theme of the night has been established…. Get government out of the business of small business and into your vagina of choice.

  20. These people keep talking about small businesses, but it’s the large businesses that reap most of the benefits and tax breaks.

  21. In reference to small businesses, the ones who employ all the workers that job creators create:

A person does not build a business, a person builds an organization and the organization builds the business.

I noticed that the guy in the steel business mentioned discussing things with the management team.

  22. Can’t do it. Just can not do it.
Five minutes was all I could watch. Hackneyed phrases and boring deliveries are way too much this evening.

  23. Speaking of lying sleaze balls; Bill0 just couldn’t stop himself from attacking Sandra Fluke again for no reason other than being invited to speak at the “democrat convention”. Didn’t she get enough the first time she crossed the Reichwhiners?

Funny. No mention of “legitimate rape” or the Huckster’s unwavering defense of Akin up to and including a claim that Akin really meant “forced rape” as if that was somehow better. No mention of the resurgent birtherism, with 7 avowed birthers scheduled to speak at the GOP convention even after Trump got bumped. In fact, no quotes from any of the speakers. I guess that even Bill0 knows that FAUX”News” can’t afford the risk of playing their speeches before they edit and sanitize them. Lord knows it wouldn’t be a good idea for “the folks” to hear the bile straight from the horses’ asses.

  24. What time is (Marie Antoinette) due to arrive by diamond covered coach to deliver the heart warming story of how the two ice cubes met?

  25. Now if only those kids in the Democratic Republic of the Congo would just dig harder and faster they too could be his granddaddy

  26. Hye look there is this thing called the 2nd ammendment. If the family is under assault just blast the shit out of the imaginary assaulting entity? Come onnow. That one is a no brainer

  27. Tonight’s theme at the RNC is “We Built That.” The Republicans should also post that under the national debt counter they have above the podium.

  28. Hey, Akin! Karma called. Your account has been closed due to continuing overdrafts.

    http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/08/akins-accepts-his-true-political-persecutors-the-leaders-of-the-republican-party.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+tpm-news+%28TPMNews%29

Seriously though. How vile does one need to be to be rejected by the GOP over insulting wimmins? I am forced to conclude that he’s every bit as nasty when he’s hanging out with his cronies.

  29. I can’t even stand any more of it second hand. I’m going to watch an episode of MST3K and take my nighty-night pills. Actually, I think I’ll take my nighty-night pills, watch an episode of MST3K, then decide if I need more pills.

    G’night.

  30. David Shuster ‏@DavidShuster

GOP attendee ejected for throwing nuts at African American CNN camera woman + saying “This is how we feed animals.”

  31. The “didn’t build their businesses” lie is now self perpetuating and premise for MORE lies. AARRGGHH!!!!!!

This is what a cold civil war looks like: making shit up entirely to create an illusion of reality. No real argument; no actual debate, no facts. Just fantasy.

  32. They sure are trotting out all of the mares tonight. I wonder if Rafalca will be there too.

I am sure we won’t hear from the women again during this convention.

  33. Oh crap, my drinking game – I saw them focus on a black woman in rapture was worth a shot of very rare liquor …… does condi Rice count as black – I need an adjudicaition!

  34. Did y’all ever notice that wealthy women can look young and beautiful as they age unless you look closely at their face. It always just looks old and the false facade denies them the beauty that comes from aging honestly. With Ann, I suspect her soul is full of rot as well.

    • I do. I’m willing to kick in a bit extra to help pay for someone who cannot, just as the taxpayers of NJ do for you Chris. You’re uninsurable without a group plan, unless you qualify as a group all by yourself.

  35. “Tonight, our duty is to tell the American people the truth. Our problems are big and the solutions will not be painless. We all must share in the sacrifice. Any leader that tells us differently is simply not telling the truth.”

So Christie is presumably for Obama.

  36. Gwen pointed out Christy didn’t mention Mitts name until about 20 minutes into the speech.
David Brooks (spit) of course was very impressed with the rah rah, fire ’em up speech.

  37. If there is any uniform theme to these speeches, it is ‘see what great people we all are, what great ideas we have, and don’t you want to be one of us?’
And such a theme is easily discredited. John Fugelsang can do it in five minutes, quoting the Bible.

  38. For all the R’s sound and fury signifying nothing, there are still folks who have to get up in the morning and contribute to the economy by selling pig pieces. Goodnight friends, goodnight air, goodnight R wingnuts everywhere.

  39. Like everyone else here, I have a strong aversion to be lied to. Fuck tweety, and all the others. I’m out. Thanks for being you, it helps me sleep better. Good night all.
