Music Night, December 21, 2012 (Not R.E.M.)

Eschewing the obvious song, although I’m sure someone else will post it.And when I did settle on Cat Stevens, there was another obvious choice but I elected to begin on a cheerful note. Someday, somewhere, maybe I’ll be able to see Yusuf in concert although it may need to be in the UK.

Have a great Solstice!

  1. I worked in a plant today that tuned in to a C&W station that played old hits. I won’t subject anyone else to it (much) but it was a trip down a very old memory lane.

  2. Back in the late 50’s, early 60’s my dad was a fan of country. It was usually playing in the house. As the 60’s progressed my older sisters shifted things to early rock and pop. By the late 60’s I was getting my own tastes which I kept from Pop because I knew it would irritate him.

I never totally lost my country roots because I eventually came to realize that much of what Pop liked was really folk ballads. I’ve always been a sucker for ballads. I don’t have much use for modern C&W, too much glitz and hype but then I don’t have much use for modern pop either for much the same reason.

Patsy Cline’s ‘Crazy’ is pretty much an icon for me. I rank it with Lennon’s ‘Imagine’.

  3. Lifted by Love. kd lang

Seems like an appropriate message for this time of year, and given all the evil we face with the gun-toting lunatics in the NRA.

  4. I don’t have a lot of Christmas traditions, but one I have tried to keep for the last several years is watching Letterman’s last show before Christmas, which is tonight. In a few moments Darlene Love will sing Christmas, Baby Please Come Home, for the 26th time. Last year’s version was awesome.
