Eschewing the obvious song, although I’m sure someone else will post it.And when I did settle on Cat Stevens, there was another obvious choice but I elected to begin on a cheerful note. Someday, somewhere, maybe I’ll be able to see Yusuf in concert although it may need to be in the UK.
Have a great Solstice!
DJ Earworm’s latest: it’s the 2012 United State of Pop mashup. Fun stuff.
recognize the Boss in that?
I owned that show on VHS. Maybe I need to find a digital copy. Unbelievable cast of performers offering props to one of the Greats.
or…. Elvis Costello, James Burton, Glen D. Hardin, Tom Waits, kd lang, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, JD Souther, T Bone Burnett, Steven Soles, and Jennifer Warnes.
The best version of that song.
That is an all star performance.
Roy Orbison had an operatic voice.
I still get shivers from this song. (The movie was fun as well)
Ten years ago, tomorrow (22 Dec) Joe died.
Thanks for the brillance that was you!
– Johnny Appleseed
– Coma Girl
– Charlie Don’t Surf
Turtle, in case you may have missed this:
Joe Strummer (gone 10 years this week) – and the John Boner song
I worked in a plant today that tuned in to a C&W station that played old hits. I won’t subject anyone else to it (much) but it was a trip down a very old memory lane.
Van the Man and The Band…
The song Van wrote about me…
Leadbelly – Where Did You Sleep Last Night
Blind Lemon Jefferson – Matchbox Blues
Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee – Whoopin’ the Blues
Ebb got the riff… đŸ˜‰
Back in the late 50’s, early 60’s my dad was a fan of country. It was usually playing in the house. As the 60’s progressed my older sisters shifted things to early rock and pop. By the late 60’s I was getting my own tastes which I kept from Pop because I knew it would irritate him.
I never totally lost my country roots because I eventually came to realize that much of what Pop liked was really folk ballads. I’ve always been a sucker for ballads. I don’t have much use for modern C&W, too much glitz and hype but then I don’t have much use for modern pop either for much the same reason.
Patsy Cline’s ‘Crazy’ is pretty much an icon for me. I rank it with Lennon’s ‘Imagine’.
Amen Hooda
nwoldguy, that maybe should be Ramen. As a duly ordained minister of the FSM I should have a little respect accorded. And now, let us turn to the entry hymn for this evenings service.
Moi bad. PTR, PTR!!
As my Paw used to say…
And the updated version…
Every year I would try and catch Lindisfarne at the Christmas concert series at Newcastle City Hal
“When the turkey’s in the oven, and the Christmas presents are bought
And Santa’s in his module, he’s an American astronaut
Do you spare a thought for Jesus, who had nothing but his thoughts,
Who gut busted just for talking, and befriending the wrong sorts?” – Winter Song by Alan Hull
Lindisfarne – Clear White Light – the song they played for an encore and closed their gigs with
Lindisfarne – Run for Home – the song for coming home, especially for Christmas after making ‘some mistakes’ on the road
Run as fast as I can, oh running man, running for home….
Old recording from 1971 or 2 – Lindisfarne and Meet Me on the Corner
And a wonderful love song from Alan – Make me want to Stay
Make me want to stay and I’ll probably stay for evermore….
I didn’t get to say this last week, R.I.P Ravi Shankar.
OK Turtles have to eat and decorate their tree – here’s my last one for now…
… Lindisfarnes’s ‘post-apocalyptic song’ (no not really) – Brand New Day
Lifted by Love. kd lang
Seems like an appropriate message for this time of year, and given all the evil we face with the gun-toting lunatics in the NRA.
Okay, I have to turn the beautiful song above now into something dirty. But I’ve always liked this song, and I think kd’s version is excellent.
K.D. Lang – Love For Sale – YouTube
Christmas Time Is Here
From k.d. to Vince G., all great choices for this evening!
Work out!
Happy, day after, Birthday, Billy!
– Waiting For The Great Leap Forward
– The Saturday Boy
– Sexuality
Jona Lewi ….. Stop the Cavalry
The real King…
One of my favorite xmas instrumentals. Brilliant…
Less than an hour until the world ends here on the East Coast.
I don’t have a lot of Christmas traditions, but one I have tried to keep for the last several years is watching Letterman’s last show before Christmas, which is tonight. In a few moments Darlene Love will sing Christmas, Baby Please Come Home, for the 26th time. Last year’s version was awesome.
Then that means she’s still going strong after all these decades!
[Letterman won’t be on, here, for two hours]
I assume Paul Schaffer does the arrangement for the song each year. They get Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound just right every time!
Obligatory (even though winter out this way looks nothing like the video)
Fun…
Eddie can sing. Nice rendition!
Just read that Jimmy died today at age 91 (he’s an East Bay blues legend)
Jimmy McCracklin
– After Hours (with Ry Cooder and Wayne Bennett)
– You Ain’t Nothing but a Devil
– Blues Blasters Boogie
Iron Butterfly bassist Lee Dorman dies at age 70
– Butterfly Bleu
