Sunday Roast: April 28th, 2013 – Three Myths about England

Myth # 1: It rains. Always.

Well it does at times, but when it does, it is still awesome. The world looks as if someone painted it:

Myth # 2: The Food sucks:

If you can’t get something decent to eat out of this at home…

You can still suffer through this in your local pub…

Myth # 3: They have a wicked sense of humor:

That’s right.

I’m back from there and wish I wasn’t. So I will reminisce a bit and plan my next trip.

This is your Open Thread. All Yours.

  1. Doesn’t matter if it’s true or not. A Republican said, so it must be “reported.”

This is the most dangerous thing about Fox. They probably have accurately reported what the lawmaker said. But offered no journalistic analysis as to whether or not it’s actually true. The RWNJ’s repeat the message, and so it goes. Then if the truth ever does come out, it doesn’t matter.

I don’t know if they were trained or not. That’s what investigations are for.

Lawmaker suggests Boston bombing suspects had training ahead of attack | Fox News

The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee said Sunday he thinks the Boston Marathon bombing suspects were trained in carrying out the attack.

Chairman Rep. Michael McCaul told “Fox News Sunday” he thinks suspects Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev had help, considering the device’s level of sophistication and the type of device — a shrapnel-packed, pressure-cooker bomb.

“That leads me to believe there was a trainer,” the Texas Republican said.

    • The ‘trainer’ was most likely the internet. I understand that pressure cooker bombs are pretty popular there, and instructions are easy to find. Of course, such a possibility hasn’t the same romantic appeal to Republicans as would, say, an Islamic terrorist or terrorist group even though the final ‘boom’ is about the same.

Who ‘trains’ Texas Republicans, btw? Must be somebody really really bad. Or stupid. Maybe both.

    • I heard about this Friday when it was reported on our local (not a Fox affiliate) news. While I wasn’t paying close attention as I was cooking, all I really heard was Homeland Security and that the bombers were trained. So yeah, the way this was reported led me to believe it was an actual fact revealed by investigation, not a matter of speculation. Thanks for pointing this out.

  2. where were those photos from EV….. looks more northern than southern. we’re going after school is out here – late June. Expensive flights :(.

    • Yes Cumbria, way north just a few miles south of Carlisle and the Scottish border. “Hesket Newmarket” is the name of the place and “The Old Crown” is the pub. All pictures have been taken in places that you can literally reach from your doorstep. The pub is 25 paces from the bar to the sofa in the cottage we rented. I am sooo homesick.

Small wonder I would love to be able to stay there. Forever.

        • Edinburgh? So beautiful, I was there last August. On our way back to Manchester Airport, we were driving through the Yorkshire Dales. That is a really beautiful area as well. Try to get a peek at Hadrian’s wall. There is a coast to coast walk along Hadrian’s wall. I seriously consider it for next year. But not in April. June sounds much more reasonable weather wise. We had four seasons worth of weather in an afternoon.

            • Oh. I have been carrying coal to Newcastle with this bit of news, methinks. I’m sure you’ll enjoy being home again.

            • LOL…. my parents live on the edge of the North York Moors these days but we still have lots of friends in Newcastle. I also lived in Edinburgh (well Linlithgow) too after graduating.
