Sunday Roast: June 16, 2013 – Where’s the outrage?

I don’t get it. Seriously.

The news about the extensive data gathering by the NSA through Verizon‘s mobile phone records being outshone only a few days later with news about PRISM should have people out in the streets. Seriously.

I am not and have never been overly shy about internet use. I follow the usual dos and don’ts, but I am aware of the fact, that whatever you put out there is in everybody’s domain. If you shout it out on Times Square you have a smaller audience than when you put it on facebook, twitter, you name it. I know that by using it I have, sort of, agreed whatever I’m writing will be no longer private. Fair enough.

I’m fine that every time I read a New York Times article I will see in a sidebar which of my friends have read which article. It shows I have smart friends, not that I haven’t known that before, but still. I am even fine with the fact that for me all websites, be it news or other, which have commercial pop-ups are advising me how to get a flat stomach or how to ward off ageing. I take  the pop-ups as an punishment for having googled about weight-loss and heat-flashes and I stick out my tongue to them and just don’t buy whatever is advertised through them.

What I do not approve of, and I am royally pissed about that, is that a government, any government, is prying inside my personal communications. So I would, of course, go and vote accordingly. No party or candidate ever gets my vote, who supports this degree of spying into the personal communications of ordinary citizens. Period.

Hah! And now, when we Europeans are mad as hell, and believe me, virtually everybody I talk to is spitting mad over here, we’ll just vote them all out of office!!!!!

Wait!

We can’t. We do not have, nor will we ever have any say in this.

This is our Open Thread. Don’t be shy. All yours.

    • As pilot in command, he can divert or declare an emercency as he see’s fit.
This may be a backhanded way of the pilot saying:
” Screw you George, it’s my turn.
I would declare an emergency and claim I smelled smoke it if he so much as farted.

  1. According to an article in my local Sunday newspaper a majority of Americans are okay with the government spying on us. REALLY!?!. Seems like a lot of politicians, pundits and media are going out of their way to defend this. I wonder why? Could it be because their overlords demand it as this surveillance and data collecting could some day be used on against the rest of us when we stand up to the corporate state?

What sickened me was on Friday. I caught part of the Ed Schultz show on progressive radio while on break and he was attacking Edward Snowden and had callers calling Snowden a traitor. I guess this is Ed’s conservative side coming out as he used to be known as the Rush Limbaugh of the upper Midwest before he switched over to the left.

    • IC, you have a point maybe Americans are not ok with the program but are being told all others are. Somewhere I’ve seen this before. Ah yes, when the Germans thought there was nothing to be done against the Government, just look at the jubilant crowds at the Reichsparteitag and listen to the radio, where all answered the media minsters call for total war with a resounding YES! There’s nothing you can do against such an overwhelming majority. That’s what many were thinking, individually, one by one, millions of them.

      • Couldn’t agree more. As to how it is that Americans can be so blind as to not see the obvious, the only basis I can come up with is crappy education, perhaps coupled with the human foible which both accepts and insists the granting or power to nincompoops. So, in case that the classic American Nincompoopery called the NSA might have missed it the first time, an excerpt just for them . . .

I know I’m not alone when it comes to having a deep and abiding concern that major factions in the United States are doggedly pursuing the imposition of a form of government which is classically defined (see: Robert Paxton) as “a system of political authority and social order intended to reinforce the unity, energy, and purity of communities in which liberal democracy stands accused of producing division and decline,” i.e. Fascism. Since the advent of modern “conservative” thought and politics in this country, the slope of decline has been tilted downhill, and moreso than ever before beginning with the “election” of George W. Bush in 2000, followed by the electoral ascendency of the so-called Tea Party in 2010.

And now, as I ponder this notion of fascism slowly tightening its grip on our otherwise “We the people” form of a Constitutional Democratic Republic, for some reason or other I invariably begin to recall phrases written in, of all things, German. Like this one, for example, the words on a post-war sign at divided Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate; the sign read:

ACHTUNG, SIE VERLASSEN den AMERIKANISCHEN SEKTOR. (Attention, you are leaving the American Sector.)

        And Away we go.

  3. Apparently, the Media and gummint thinks that there is no fundamental right to privacy.
The Founding Fathers would be ashamed of what we’ve let happen to their Constitution.

    • Quite obviously the fight for civil rights has been fought in the late 60s and the 70s needs to be fought all over again. We’ve squandered what we achieved. And we are that generation. How could we?

  4. Jeb Bush for said the future of America’s economy depends upon immigrants in part because they “are more fertile” and create more businesses than native-born Americans.

Sarah Palin criticized Bush and added “I say this as someone who’s kind of fertile herself.”

Oh, so at age 50, it looks like we should expect another Down Syndrome baby from Queen Esther.

    • Or look to a new campaign urging white wimmens to make lots of babies to counter the darkies and La Raza’s attempt to turn the US into Mexico. The tricky part is that this will necessarily require government support for the breeding program, but I have faith that The Quitter can rationalize that easily (and by “rationalize” I do not suggest that “rational” will ever be involved).

  5. There’s no outrage, because the Gubmint said all this spyin’ has kept us safer by actually ketchin’ terrerists. An’ o’ course, when the Gubmint says they is ketchin’ terrerists, we believe them, ‘cuz, you know, the Gobmint don’t lie to us nohow noway nosirree.

So, you know, this is a post 9/11 werld, and 9/11 changed everthin’. ‘Sides we all draw the line at the gubmint trackin’ our guns, ‘cuz, you know, we don’t trust the gubmint an’ we gots the right tew bare armes in case we need to overthrow the gubmint ‘cuz it’s takin’ away our freedumbs.

An’ while I’m at it, I don’t trust the gubmint to give me no health care ‘cuz I don’t want no death panel tellin’ me what treatments I can or cannot have. But I’m ok with the gubmint doctor sticking something ub cuzin Ella’s who-who ‘cuz she gots herself knocked up by her step brother Billy-bob when he came home drunk after the county fair an’ had his way with her. After all, it’s his kid tew, and so what if he can’t afford no child support ‘cuz he gots himself fired six years ago fer showin’ up drunk on the job. She shoulda known that when she let him rape her an’ not let herself get preggers in the first place. That’s the real outrage, ya know.

an’ if yew ain’t got nuttin’ to hide, yew don’ need no so-called right to privacie. now if yew’l ‘scuse me, I gots to go on EBay an’ see if I gots the winnin bid on that used huntin’ rifle. heck, I buy all my guns on EBay ‘cuz the gobmint don’t do no trackin’ on what I buy their.

  6. E. W. Jackson (Repiggie nominee for Lt Gov of VA): Birth Defects Are A Result of Sin And Rebellion Against God

“Keep in mind that the whole cosmos has been made imperfect — wounded — by sin. It is the principle of sin, rebellion against God and His truth which has brought about birth defects and other destructive natural occurrences. Leaving aside that for a moment, recent discoveries about the genetic code of each human being are a fulfillment of scripture. Your genetic code is the handwriting of God, written before you or the world existed. Our genetic blueprint is proof of the existence of the Living God and His infinite intelligence, purpose and design. Sadly, many will ignore the deeper spiritual truth which underlies the advance of this scientific knowledge.”

I’m guessing that’s how he explains his staggering stupidity.

    • EWWWW. Wow. Far out. Far far far far out. “Our genetic blueprint is proof of the existence of the Living God . . .”

If human is the best It can do, then It ain’t worth the powder to blow It up. Period. Amen. Etc.

      • If it’s the handwriting of god then why do I need an electron microscope to read it?

        • 1. Gawd writes really, really, really small;
          2. Gawd’s a lawyer, genetic encoding is the fine print;
          3. Gawd’s a doctor – no one is supposed to be able to read his handwriting….

    • If my genetic code was written before the world existed, then wasn’t it writtem before sin existed? Wouldn’t birth defects then be better explained as “God had a few too many and his handwriting got sloppy”?

    • You better not be giving her another cookie. No I didn’t…

Hope you are having a grand Father’s Day, bdmm! (how are the bdmgrandsons doing?)

  7. A argumentação para não comer polvo. (The argument for not eating octopus)

[turn on the CC – unless you understand Portuguese

  8. Just a thought….

What is scary about all of this NSA, PRISM, government surveillance and data collecting stuff is that it has continued ten fold under a democratic president A president who once as a candidate on the campaign trail promised to allow the Patriot Acts I & II to expire, yet as a senator voted for the FISA law and retro active immunity for AT&T.

It has become obvious that it no longer matters which party wins the White House anymore. The POTUS answers to others, while congress is just a side show distraction whose job is to protect their own personal interest and the interests of their overlords.

As for Americans being stupid….Yes, we have become a dumbed down society. Many Americans lack critical thinking skills or logic. Many get their information from 3 second sound bites, anything longer and these idiots lose interest.

One last thought. Germany is an excellent example of the herd mentality. 9/11 kind of gave us a glimpse of that same herd mentality right in our own country. The corporate media being used as a propaganda tool to get us in line or to deceive us. Hate, fear and nationalism are very useful tools to control the masses….apparently enough for us to quietly give up more of our privacy and freedom in the guise of security.

    • He who controls the past controls the present. He who controls the present controls the future.

He who controls the media controls the past and present.

  9. We went for a hike today. Here is a link to some pics, vids and trails.

Beautiful day. We went early to beat the Father’s Day rush. Sure enough, we saw only 2 hikers and 2 bikers until the last half hour and then saw 28 more hikers, 7 dogs with hikers and no bikers. The parking lot was full and the road was packed coming in when we were done! Great to see so many people getting out of the city.
