Two days before the high-profile George Zimmerman second-degree murder trial is set to begin, the judge delivered what many are interpreting as a blow to the prosecution. The judge ruled Saturday that jurors won’t hear from experts who would have suggested that Trayvon Martin was the one who could be heard screaming in a 911 call before he was shot. Jurors in the trial involving the killing of the unarmed 17-year-old will hear the 911 call but will have to decide for themselves whose voice can be heard in the audio, reports the Miami Herald.

“There is no evidence to establish that their scientific techniques have been tested and found reliable,” Circuit Judge Debra Nelson wrote in her 12-page ruling, according to USA Today. The judge agreed with the defense team that techniques used by the experts are not “widely accepted at this time.” Indeed, the defense had presented four experts who said it was impossible to determine the identity of the person on the recording. But the judge does not ban anyone from talking about speculation over the identity of the voices heard on the recording, meaning that others, including Trayvon’s mother, could identify his voice in the recording.

    • I don’t think this is fatal blow to the prosecution. The tape will be played, and his mother can identify her son’s voice.

Although I can’t imagine hearing my son’s agony, fear, and final words.

      • I can understand why they could legitimately put Trayvon’s mother on the stand, since she can provide testimony that supports or contradicts the official version of events. Is there any reason why they would permit one of Zim’s relatives (his father or brother) to testify about anything that happened that night if they were not previously involved at all? I’m concerned one of them could just claim it’s George screaming, then you have a he said/she said thing going.

        • I think a skillful attorney could make a convincing case to the jury with Trayvon’s mother’s testimony.

Whether or not it will persuade them to convict is anyone’s guess.

  2. Ottawa neighborhood embroiled in squirrel deportation scandal

Sick and tired of ransacked bird feeders and gardens, homeowners in an upscale Ottawa neighborhood have apparently taken to illegally trapping and transporting squirrels across province lines to Quebec.

    • Wayne, those of us on this blog have our priorities in order, and have compassion for our fellow humans and their rights, which flies in the face of the hideous objectivism of Ayn Rand-humpers.

      • I’m not a philosopher, and my understanding of these kinds of things is limited, but to me, the difference between Left Wing Libertarians and Right Wing Libertarians is that people like me want to be free with other people, while people like the Pauls want themselves to be free of other people.

        • Free of other people, while at the same time interfering with other people‘s lives and rights.

But still having the hated governmental safety net whenever they need it.

    • If you treat other people the way you want to be treated, you’ll never want someone else to live your life for you, because shackling others means you’ve chosen to shackle yourself. We’re all free, or we’re all slaves.

      Indeed.

    • This is likely the end. He’s 94 years old, has a persistent lung infection, and has spent weeks and weeks in a hospital bed.

I doubt his body has the strength to fight his illness anymore.

  3. Alongside the in-car camera feed for the Nascar race is a chat stream. I glance over every now and then, to see what they are saying. Someone trying to be funny says “Vettel will win this race!”
    (He races in Formula One)
Danica just got back on the lead lap after a tire went down and caused her to spin off. She’s 34th right now, with about 36 laps to go at Sonoma.

    • Danica finished 29th. Her owner Tony Stewart finished 28th, and boyfriend Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. finished 27th. I had to leave with about fifteen laps to go.

      • Is this on your ex’s place? You sound like the best ex ever. If I am ever divorced, I would like to be divorced from you.

  5. Maybe we should change the title from Ah, Well… to Aw, Hell!

I’m sorry to hear of your troubles EV, mine went much different from what usually happens.

    • So sorry to read that, EV. at least you have the courage to do it. For whatever your reasons, I applaud you.
