The Watering Hole, Thursday September 12 2013; Good News? Really? Where?

Ok, so here’s the thing: I’ve spent several hours over the last few days in search of some good news emanating from the political world. My results to date: Nada. Zip. Zero. Nothing. I frankly can’t remember a time — ever — that’s remained as devoid of even the barest shred of a promising development as have the last what, weeks? Months? Years? Decades? But that, of course, is my point-of-view. There was, yesterday, here in Colorado’s RWNJ community, lots of joy and happiness once the results of a pair of state senate recall elections in which two Democrats who worked earnestly on behalf of the state’s recently enacted gun laws . . . background checks now mandated, also assault rifle magazine size limited . . . were recalled in a special election. Both lost, thanks in no small part to heavy duty NRA investments of both time and cash; thus today, wingnuts across the state will continue floating on cloud nine, convinced that the tide is finally turning, that pretty soon Americans will once again be FREE to own and carry as many mass murder devices as they wish. Just like the Founders intended!

Why is owning the means of mass murder such a joy-inducer to Wingnuts, even as birth control pills are deemed so horrible that they should be banned? What, the fertilized egg is a “Person” but a young black fellow wearing a hoodie and sipping his ice tea is not? Twenty elementary school children were only murdered because their teachers weren’t heavily armed?

What kind of a nutcase country has this one become? And WHY??

Beats me. Anyone?

  1. There is the power of wealth and the power of the gun. 98% are forever prevented from enjoying the power of wealth, but have the power of the gun. And, let’s face it, the power to take a life is one of the greatest powers around.

Gun violence is glorified because it is the poor killing the poor. 1 Robin Hood would change all of that.

    • Speaking of Robin Hood, that may be why the latest Robin Hood movie, with Russel Crowe, re-cast Robin Hood as a villian, & Prince John as the righteous dude.

Re-write the fables and legends, so that the rich and powerful are the heros, and all who stand up to them are the villians…it’s all about control through propaganda & lack of education.

        • A lot of the Kevin Costner Robin Hood is filmed nearby which is why the tree is known now as the Robin Hood Tree. It grows out of the 2,000 year old Roman Wall. AndytheTurtle had immense fun pretending to be Scots and invading England “Och ma jock, hoots mon!” and climbing over the wall. This is a must see location in Europe IMO – the nearby Roman fort of Vindolanda is a unique treasure in archeaology – the peat soil preserved more Roman leather craft than anywhere in the Empire and also a whole heap of personal letters, from the wife of the second-in-command inviting her friends to a birthday party to a centurion pleading with his friend in York (Eboracum) 100 miles away to “Send more beer!” And the day we had there was that kind of weather! Awesome day out.

  2. I read a study recently that shows babies are naturally altruistic.

There is hope for our species. But historically, change has always come at a great price in human lives. Empires fall, empires rise.

We know more of DaVinci, Michaelangelo, Mozart, Beethovan, etc., than we do of their rich benefactors. That, in itself, speaks for what is truly important to us, in the long run.

  3. Francesco Femia and Caitlin Werrell at WaPo see evidence that climate change and drought helped cause the Syria conflict:

“We found it very interesting that right up to the day before the revolt began in Daraa, many international security analysts were essentially predicting that Syria was immune to the Arab Spring. They concluded it was generally a stable country. What they had missed was that a massive internal migration was happening, mainly on the periphery, from farmers and herders who had lost their livelihoods completely.

Around 75 percent of farmers suffered total crop failure, so they moved into the cities. Farmers in the northeast lost 80 percent of their livestock, so they had to leave and find livelihoods elsewhere. They all moved into urban areas — urban areas that were already experiencing economic insecurity due to an influx of Iraqi and Palestinian refugees. But this massive displacement mostly wasn’t reported. So it wasn’t factoring into various security analyses. People assumed Syria was relatively stable compared to Egypt.”

Kevin Drum summarizes what we do and don’t know about climate change’s connection to conflict:

“Climate scientists have been warning for over a decade that global warming is going to produce environmental stresses and severe weather patterns that will have devastating impacts on countries that are none too stable to begin with. As always, there will never be proof that any particular war is due solely or even primarily to climate change, just as no particular hurricane is ever solely the product of climate change. But the evidence is striking—and getting more striking all the time—that climate change very likely plays a role.”

  4. Ah the grand irony. I just noticed that the pair of Wingnuttistanians that replaced the pair of moderate/progressives in the Colorado legislature following Tuesday’s recall ‘election’ are (a) absolutely dead set against ANY and ALL legislative efforts to control any aspect of gun ownership, including the recently passed stuff that requires background checks even as it limits magazine size to (horror of horrors) a max of fifteen rounds; they’re also (b) strongly in favor of PERSONHOOD, as in passing legislation to declare the fertilized egg a person and thereby do away with most contraceptives and all abortion procedures (except for the back-alley variety, I suppose). Murder by gun is fine as in the Aurora theater incident, but a contraceptive that causes the loss of the fertilized egg? AGAINST GOD!!!

Oh, and the districts where the two recalls took place each went for Obama in 2012 by close to 20%. Off-year September elections apparently genuinely favor the nut crowd, esp. when the use of mail-in ballots — an electoral staple in Colorado until Republicans somehow managed to void the use of mail-in ballots for this recall — are no longer available. Lucky they had the NRA available to pay their bills and print up their propaganda bullshit.

The only good news is that the Dems still control both houses plus the governor’s office, and since it was the state Senate Majority leader that was one of the two recalls, it appears the next Senate Majority leader will be one who is, apparent, *almost* as far to the political left as I am (hard to imagine, I know, but still there may be hope).

      • Fortunately for Amurka, a Supreme Court (wingnut) majority has noted that voter suppression — so long as it mostly impacts Democrats, blacks, Latinos, wimmin, and all three o’dem illegal voters lurking out there SOMEwhere — is a good and legal thing. I mean, where in the Constitution does it say that wimmin or brown skins have the right to even be taken seriously, much less vote? IT AIN’T IN THERE!!

Voter suppression is LEGAL, and CONSTITUTIONAL!! Plus, it’ll save Amurka for the WHITE men who owns the place!!

        //snark off, but still available

    • If I had my d’ruthers, I’d prefer to watch something more in tune with reality, something maybe like, “Watch as Fox & Friends are Shot Down Dead In Benghazi.”

Preferred reality in preference to Wingnut Propaganda. Maybe it’s just me, but . . . well, you know.

    • If you believe the GOP about Benghazi, it was the worst thing to happen the US, or any country in the history of the world.

Of course, come October 23, 2013, the 30th anniversary of the barracks bombings, which happened under Reagan’s watch, I suspect we won’t hear a peep. 241 were killed.

      • “October 23, 2013, the 30th anniversary of the barracks bombings, which happened under Reagan’s watch, I suspect we won’t hear a peep”

It was Obama’s fault. And Hillary’s.

  5. NASA: Voyager 1 probe has left the solar system – Yahoo News

Voyager 1 has crossed a new frontier, becoming the first spacecraft ever to leave the solar system, NASA said Thursday.Thirty-six years after it was launched from Earth on a tour of the outer planets, the plutonium-powered probe is more than 11 1/2 billion miles from the sun, cruising through interstellar space — the vast, cold emptiness between the stars, the space agency said.

    • My ENVY of Voyager 1 is currently unsurpassed. My final hope, in this life, is that within thirty-six years following my final croak, I might somehow wind up at least 11 billion miles from earth, in a neighborhood devoid of IDIOTS!! So: if-so-then-whenever . . . color me HAPPY! GRATEFUL! BLESSED! Etc.

Imagine it: an existence void of, say, Rayguns; Bushes; Boners; Can’tors; not to mention alladem Paulistas? and Teh Cruz’s? . . . whatever THAT might imply . . .

Where, in this world these days, might be that PARADISE that’s free of IDIOTS??

Directions would be appreciated. Click here [_] to contribute one US dollar to . . . etc.
      😯

      • I was kind of thinking the same thing…. looking back at this outpost of mayhem, V1 would be bemused by the perspective gained by the journey made so far.

  6. LOS ANGELES (AP) — NASA’s Voyager 1 probe has left the solar system, boldly going where no machine has gone before.

Thirty-six years after it rocketed away from Earth, the plutonium-powered spacecraft has escaped the sun’s influence and is now cruising 11 1/2 billion miles away in interstellar space, or the vast, cold emptiness between the stars, NASA said Thursday.

  7. Eff the 2nd Amendment:

Target shooting confirmed as cause of Morgan Fire

…investigators have determined target shooting to be the cause of the Morgan Fire that consumed over 3,000 acres in the area around Mount Diablo.
…at its height forced the evacuation of over 100 homes. Over 1000 firefighters are still working to control the fire which is now 90 percent contained.

  8. There was Benghazi evidence being stored there so Obama and Hilary torched the place.

New Jersey Boardwalk Spared by Sandy is Engulfed in Flames – Yahoo News

A stretch of boardwalk on the Jersey Shore was engulfed in flames today when a six-alarm fire broke out in [Seaside Park][0], N.J.

The boardwalk was near the same stretch of sand where a rollercoaster landed upright in the ocean after Superstorm Sandy hit the coastline in October 2012\.
