Sunday Roast: Lake McDonald

Early morning on Lake McDonald in Glacier Park.  It was sooooo quiet.

I’m glad we went to Glacier this last week, because certain areas in the park are closed a couple of weeks early because of bear activity.  We saw an adolescent Black Bear in the road, but he was a smart bear, and ran back into the woods as soon as he saw us.

Happy first day of Fall!!!

This is our daily open thread — Chat among yourselves.

    • Why such lies persist is amazing. There is zero, nil, nada and no evidence that Obama plans to take away guns — yet the proponents have convinced many that the opposite is true.

  1. Justin Turner is a NY Mets infielder. When they interview a Mets player after a Mets win, Turner is the one who usually sneaks up behind him and hits him in the face with a shaving cream pie.

      • My data from the CDC comes back differently.

“In fact, a staggering 80% of gun homicides are gang-related. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), gang homicides accounted for roughly 8,900 of 11,100 gun murders in both 2010 and 2011. That means that there were just 2,200 non gang-related firearm murders in both years in a country of over 300 million people and 250 million guns.

      • I’ve long figured that 100% of gun homicides in the US are committed by terrorists, because only a terrorist is stupid enough and vicious enough to use a gun to murder another person.

More’s the pity that the Constitution actually “legitimizes” domestic terrorism by virtue of its stupid second amendment, today even further “legitimized” by the intensely MORE ridiculous ‘stand your ground’ laws. Are all gun owners terrorists? No, but each and every one of the buggers has the tool at hand to become one whenever the spirit moves him/her.

    • Had to do some laundry so we have nice things to wear to as wake tomorrow. If I can, I’d prefer to do laundry on a weekend rather than during the week. Also, because I’m a bit agoraphobic, I’d rather there be nobody else in the laundry when I do mine, so I go there at around 4:00 in the morning. Anyway, the first few comments I did before I went out and the rest after I got back. Then I went back to bed. 🙂

  2. At 7:55 am pacific on the NBC Sports channel, they have live Barclays Premier League Soccer, Manchester City vs Manchester United. I bet Terry the Turtle will be up for watching that if he’s got that channel.

F1 at Singapore is up next, the series’ only night race, and that allows the race to be live at the usual time we’re used to seeing it, midday in Europe, and breakfast time here.

  3. Republicans Invoke the Soviet Constitution to Justify Food Stamp Cuts

Article twelve of the 1936 Soviet Constitution states:

In the USSR work is a duty and a matter of honor for every able-bodied citizen, in accordance with the principle: “He who does not work, neither shall he eat.”

The 1936 Soviet Constitution was based on the 1917 work of Lenin.

According to Lenin, “He who does not work shall not eat” is a necessary principle under socialism, the preliminary phase of the evolution towards communist society. The phrase appears in his 1917 work, The State and Revolution. Through this slogan Lenin explains that in socialist states only productive individuals could be allowed access to the articles of consumption.

  4. About yesterday’s priest post….

UPDATE: Priest found with pantless 15-year old boy has been reassigned by Diocese 15 times since 1988.

    Q. Why did the priest go to Macy’s?
    A. Boys pants were half off.

  5. Listening to the President speaking and wondering whether Faux is showing it and how soon until they and other reichwing talking heads will accuse him of politicizing the Navy Yard shoothing?

    • I have to wonder how anyone who believes in a god can say god loves America in addition to wondering how deep the shit would be if they believed their god didn’t love us?

    • I think those are text from any computer’s character map. If it were really upside down, the capital H would hang down from the middle of the text line, in line with the upside down f and d (really a ‘p’). It’s a trick.

    • Thanks for the laughs!

ok, so the parakeet is missing. So why is everyone looking at me?

This is the best thing Herb, you push this button, a
bell rings – and out pops a snack!

  6. FYI: Al Jazeera America has an hour documentary at 9pm eastern about Bill McKibben (350.org), called Do The Math. It repeats at midnight eastern.

  7. I finally found a place that has one of my favorite newspaper snippets.

The one I really like (among others) is:

Debra jackson says she likes shopping at the Dollar Palace because it is convenient and casual.

“I don’t have to get dressed up like I’m going to Wal-mart or something,” she says…

Here’s a reminder of how people get “dressed up” to go to Wal-mart.
