The Watering Hole, Friday October 4, 2013; “That Which We Are, We Are”

Ok, so I’m weird. I know that. Still, a pair of photographs snapped here within the last two weeks almost seem to sum up . . . to sum up America, circa fall of 2013. That would include, on the one hand, the America that once was prosperous and once a beacon to the world, displayed alongside that which she has since become today . . . a withering and proto-fascist state, motivated solely by greed and the quest for power, and owned by the greedy, all thanks to the bizarre influence of its crazy fringe, aka the Tea Party.

Maybe it’s time to allow the innocence that is so deeply embedded in the natural world to have a moment, to have its say in the matter? Dare we try? Sure, why not!

Two photos. Sunflowers. Colorado, Front Range foothills. Two weeks apart. The resemblance to concurrent actions by the U.S. House of Representatives is uncanny to say the least, and maybe even (to some) a bit concerning. Do those actions describe US? ‘We the people’? Or . . . dare we hope . . . they might simply and only describe those congressional idiots who, whether they know it or not (and most surely do NOT know, true story!), are, themselves — along with all whom they presume to represent — withering???

Like this, maybe??

Sunflowers, 2013Two weeks: from Vibrant! and Alive! . . . to a dry and shriveled death where the remnants appear worthy . . .  only . . . of becoming . . . Tea?

Flowers. Dying. Nations. Dying. T.S.Eliot summed it all when he wrote,

We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats’ feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar

Shape without form, shade without colour,
Paralysed force, gesture without motion;

Those who have crossed
With direct eyes, to death’s other Kingdom
Remember us — if at all — not as lost
Violent souls, but only
As the hollow men
The stuffed men.

The Hollow men; The Stuffed men; Headpiece filled with straw. Boehner, Cantor, McConnell, Cruz, Paul, . . . the list goes on, and on, and on.

It’s fall. Flowers wilt in the fall. Do Hollow men wilt? Ever? Or were they born wilted?

Between the desire
And the spasm
Between the potency
And the existence
Between the essence
And the descent
Falls the Shadow
For Thine is the Kingdom . . .

This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

Or, on a brighter note, words from Alfred Lord Tennyson:

‘Tis not too late to seek a newer world . . .

Tho’ much is taken, much abides; and tho’
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Brings to mind a panorama: the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Colorado, taken one week ago. No Hollow Men; no Republicans; no Government Shutdown; no Idiots; no Politics; all that’s left is . . . this:

  1. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

We Americans have failed to pay full price, opting for bargain basement quality ‘vigilance’, and now… well… we’re paying the price.

And it may cost us the whole damn farm…

    • Only tragedy there was that not so many people saw that – thank FSM for the interwebs!

But wow, the Youtube rabbit hole that one leads to is bizarre and disturbing – elephant attacks for real, gorillas flingin poo and a man with his head up an elephant’s asshole …. 😯

  2. A Fox Lie caught right in the act.

Interesting that the headline right below shows the first statement to not be true.

If Americans were equally fed up with Congress and Obama, then the disapproval ratings would be the same. But they’re not. Obama’s is sitting at 49% and Congress’ is setting at 81%. Those are not anywhere close to being equal.

WHILE CONGRESS CONTINUES to point fingers over who is to blame for the current budget impasse, Fox News polls show Americans appear equally fed up with Congress and President Obama, raising the possibility of an anti-incumbent backlash in 2014. FOX NEWS POLL: 81 percent disapprove of Congress, 49 percent disapprove of Obama

    • Unfortunately; their loyal worshipers won’t even notice and even if they did they would just consider it “proof that the libruls have even gotten to FAUXNews”.

  3. Harry Reid can be such an idiot. He could have said something about how Democrats had passed several continuing resolutions that would have funded the NIH, or that the sequestration cuts also hit the NIH, or that the Republican budget recommendations also cut back NIH funding, or that there were probably plenty of poor kids with ailments in states where Republicans had opted out of the Medicaid expansion — well, whatever, instead he rejected any of that and insulted the reporter. Great messaging, Harry.

  4. (Fox’s) Kilmeade really showed his geographical hand when he said to his Nicaraguan-born, Florida-bred co-host Maria Molina, “You grew up on tacos, correct?”

Brian: What are tips we need to know to do it correctly? You grew up on tacos, correct?

Elisabeth: You gotta layer it right?

Maria: No I did not grow up on tacos. I’m Nicaraguan. And it’s not a native food.

    Brian: Oh…I didn’t know.

Elisabeth: But if you DID…if you DID grow up on tacos…

  5. QOTD:

“President Obama will negotiate with the Syrian butcher Assad and erase his red line, will capitulate to Vladimir Putin, and he will negotiate with the happy face of the killer regime in Iran, President Rouhani, but not with Republicans over issues all presidents have always negotiated over,” – Hugh Hewitt.

This is particularly odious and insidious. What president has ever “negotiated” repealing a duly enacted law because one faction in one House has decided that it will shut down the government and destroy the US and global economy if he doesn’t? When has such a thing ever happened before? Hewitt is one of the most shame-free liars and propagandists in the media. And he’ll keep lying to gin up the base.

  6. Markos Moulitsas at Daily Kos defines today’s Wingnuttistan as well as anyone I’ve yet read or seen.
What makes the conservative base tick: fear and worry

The teabaggers see everything Democrats do with electoral lenses. They feel besieged, thus every action just compounds that paranoia. Democrats want immigration reform? Well, it has to be to add to Democratic voter rolls. They want to provide affordable health insurance to the uninsured? It must be to make people so dependent on government that they can’t help but add to Democratic voter rolls. Indeed, this is why they’ve lost their heads over the voter registration provisions of Obamacare. For a party that likes to claim it speaks for the American people, they are truly terrified of a genuinely representative government.

Problem is, a government that is representative to the people will, by definition, be run by the party that best represents all Americans. Republicans, too busy retrenching into their regional redoubts, cannot be that party. But they won’t spend energy trying to rebrand and become more responsive to the general public. Instead, they’ll double down on their asshole policies while doing their damndest to keep people from voting or gerrymandering their vote into irrelevance.

That isn’t just the sign of a minority party headed toward permanent minority status, but one that is snarling, wounded and backed into a corner.

That wounded, rabid animal is undoubtedly dangerous, perhaps more dangerous than ever before. But like all wounded, rabid animals, it will eventually die.

    • And, just like rabid animals, they are turning on each other in their confusion over whether they want to take credit for the shutdown or blame the President for the shutdown; often coming from the same persons in a single interview. The good news is that it seems that the American people are far less confused. Every poll I’ve seen indicates that said American people want the GOoPers to stop their tantrum and pass a CR. Even the most rabid teabagger has to be aware of the fact that a clean bill would pass if Boner wasn’t too terrified of Lushbo and inSeannity to allow a vote. Of course, the fact that the entire world is against them just strengthens their resolve.

      • They had the best twitter pictures of several I looked at. I didn’t even remember it was her site. Several people at DU said it was on MSNBC right before The Ed Show.

  7. Rev Al is having an epic argument on his show, with a Rep from FL in a toupee, who is absolutely incapable of answering any question. He’s just going on and on with talking points aka lies.

  8. Wind is a finite
    resource and harnessing it would
slow the winds down which would
cause the temperature to go up.

    Rep. Joe barton (R-TX)

House author of the Energy Policy Act of 2005
Chairman of the House-Senate energy conference committee

    • That explains it. In the 1961 movie Mutiny on the Bounty, while the ship was in Tahiti I noticed that Brando (Fletcher Christian) never wore a jacket. Had to be because the Bounty sucked up so much of that finite wind that it caused the temp. to go up both in Tahiti AND later on Pitcairn’s Island.

Wow; just imagine how much all those sailing ships changed the global climate! Far out!

  9. Tweety pimping his book seems perfectly timed to resurrect his flailing career. I’m going to get sick if MSNBC doesn’t stop letting him shamelessly plug his Tip O’neil book.
