Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;

She once was a true love of mine.

In a forgotten language, flowers had meanings:

Parsley – Knowledge
Sage – Wisdom
Rosemary – Remembrance
Thyme – Courage

The song date back hundreds of years, and many variations of the lyrics have evolved, but they all center around love requiring the performance of impossible tasks.

She once was a true love of mine…

‘though she still lives, the minstrel has moved on from a true love that demanded the impossible, both he demanding it from her, and her demanding it from him. Now the true love is but a memory, and, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.

    • Forty or more years ago I learned, from a man who was born in 1888, about the issuing of drivers licenses when a drivers licence became a legal requirement in Maryland. Back then, if you walked to the office where licenses were issued you had to swear that you knew how to drive before you received one. If you drove to the office they figured you knew how to drive and just issued you a license.

    • you’re welcome. I took a class a few years ago, The Poetry of Rock, where all we did all semester was analyse music lyrics – what were the artists really saying in their song. The Simon & Garfunkel version adds new – anti war- lyrics to a very old love ballad to come up with a different take.

      But the fascinating part of the old ballad was the message in the herbs. Another lost language is the language of roses….

    Gov. Jerry Brown took a swipe at California’s critics during his State of the State address to the state Legislature on Wednesday, praising a “California comeback” he said delivered a million new jobs, a budget surplus and higher minimum wage.
    However, Brown cautioned that the state faces serious challenges, including billions in pension liabilities and a drought that threatens California’s future.

    He has been lower profile than his immediate predecessors, focusing more on the details of governing than on media events and public pronouncements.

    The speech also illustrated the duality of Brown’s governorship: Calling for fiscal austerity while at the same time urging that billions be invested in public works, including the controversial high-speed rail system.
    Brown’s address served as another reminder about the diminished role of California Republicans.

  17. A reminder for the next time Terrible Ted calls himself a “patriot”.

    Theodore Anthony Nugent first received a high school 1-S deferment in February 1967, when he was 18. After briefly being reclassified as available for service, Nugent got a 2-S college deferment when he enrolled in Oakland Community College in Michigan.

    In August 1969, Nugent took his draft physical and was rejected for service. He was classified as 1-Y, indicating that he was qualified for service only in time of a national emergency. The 1-Y classification was usually issued to candidates saddled with significant medical or mental issues.

    In interviews, Nugent has provided varying accounts of how he avoided a seat on a troop transport to Southeast Asia. In a 1977 High Times interview, he claimed to have stopped bathing a month before his draft physical, adding that he showed up for the exam with pants “crusted” with urine and feces. “I was a walking, talking hunk of human poop,” recalled Nugent.

    But while Nugent would subsequently disavow his defecation claim, he did cop to snorting a line of crystal meth before the physical because, “I wanted to see the look on the Sergeant’s face.”

    Five weeks after the exam, Nugent received his 1-Y deferment on October 7, 1969. Nugent’s 1-Y deferment remained in effect until 1972, when the classification was abolished. He was then reclassified as 4-F, which covered registrants not qualified for military service.

    In his High Times interview, Nugent recalled his glee at evading the chance to defend his country (though he mixed up the 1-Y and 4-F deferments). “And in the mail I got this big juicy 4-F,” he said. “They’d call dead people before they’d call my ass.”

  18. Sherman, Crabtree mic’d up on NFL Network

    Well, this could be fun. The NFL Network has announced that Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman and San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree, along with Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson were all mic’d up for this past Sunday’s NFC Championship Game, won by Seattle 23-17.

    The show can be seen tonight at 8 p.m. Seattle time on NFL Network, follow by replays of the games tonight, also including the mic’d up segments, at 9 p.m.

    According to my listing, that would be on NFL Total Access. I want to hear what they said to each other, that set Sherman off after the game.
