Outrage, anyone?

OH MY GOD!!! Obama allowed the exchange of five — count ’em, FIVE!! — Taliban POWs for only ONE American Army POW! Uh oh. America’s DOOMED!! The “terrorists” now have five more guys than before!! We’re doomed!! We’re doomed!!

Fascinating how a relatively “simple” POW exchange near a war’s end can suddenly become so vicious a topic. Rest assured, however, that the nastiness has no foreign “terrorist” source. Nope. The true terrorists behind this mess are familiar and home grown, domestic. Republicans, Teabaggers, Conservatives, Wingnuts, Fascists, . . . choose a name, any name; all are equally accurate and descriptive . . . and disgusting.

Found two links which pretty much summarize both the source of the outrage AND the impact of same on anyone still possessing a viable mind. First is this little gem — Fox Contributor Grenell Behind PR Campaign For Soldiers Critical Of Bergdahl — in which the undercurrents driving the day’s vitriolic drivel are described and revealed. One of the comments which followed stood out in the way it summarizes the silliness implicit in the (faux) “outrage” being endlessly spouted by the American Fascist Movement, aka the GOP:

You know, we are supposed to be the mightiest, bad-ass military in the world (USA! USA!), but we are SO worried about five dudes? Seriously? Your kid is much more likely to get shot in school by an American than killed by a terrorist from the Middle East. (underline mine)

Amen, amen.

Then there’s this one, an essay on entitled Negotiating With Terrorists, in which the author pretty much sums up how at least a few folks, myself included, have come to feel about the never-ending Wingnut BS in which this country finds itself immersed. He effectively summarizes the impact of the current POW exchange freakout when he writes:

Are we now so filled with foul bilious hatred, are we now so consumed with soul-destroying fear, do we now despise our own selves so much that we would actually protest the return of one of our own? Is that it?

Is that what we’ve become?

If so, then the sooner America collapses of its own maggot-ridden gangrenous rot, the better.

Indeed: is that what we’ve finally become? I can muster little if any argument with either the premise or, sadly, the conclusion. Never thought I’d ever come to feel that level of outrage, but . . .

Well, maybe Emily Dickinson summed it all up 150 yrs ago when she wrote (were the consequences of today’s mangled American Politic somehow predictable way back then?) —

The difference between Despair
And Fear — is like the One
Between the instant of a Wreck
And when the Wreck has been —

The Mind is smooth — no Motion —
Contented as the Eye
Upon the Forehead of a Bust —
That knows — it cannot see –

Hmmh. I will think on this.

  1. The Israelis average 450 to 1 in their prisoner exchanges. 5 to 1 makes Obama look like an excellent negotiator. Prior to the exchange, loads of righties were calling on Obama to bring our soldier home, as though the length of his captivity was an indication that the President was a poor Commander in Chief. The only possible explanation for the current furor over Bergdahl’s release is that RW politicians are vile hypocrites, and their supporters are deranged.

  2. Ya know, the GOP wants to frame this as Obama’s ‘Willie Horton’ moment. Good thing this swap wasn’t pulled off before the last election.

    • That reads like an Onion story.

Hmm, wonder if Snowden would be subject to the same scrutiny should he go against Russian law

  3. One of the mechanics next door asked me about a Navy ship named Haliburton that he heard mentioned on the radio this AM. Some quick research showed the USS Halyburton FFG-40, a fast frigate named after Marine William Halyburton who had died in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, was in the news. In April 2009 it had gained fame as one of the Navy ships in the rescue of Captain Philips of the Maersk Alabama. The news was that the ship, which has been home ported at Mayport Naval Station up the road about 40 miles, will be decommissioned this year and given to Turkey.

The mechanic, an Army retiree was concerned that the country may have had a ship named after a company that is a homophone of this one’s name!

    • I received an email on that matter today from Defenders of Wildlife, a major wolf advocate organization. In it, this:

. . . we just [also] learned that the California Fish and Game Commission voted courageously yesterday to list gray wolves under the state’s endangered species law. This decision will need to be ratified by a second Commission vote in August before it becomes final, but the far sighted step taken yesterday heralds the restoration of an iconic predator to California’s landscapes. It also will help provide a warmer welcome should OR-7 or his family wander south into California.

Hoping that the second vote doesn't change! Also hoping that maybe the US Fish and Wildlife "Service" will reevaluate their wolf delisting and reverse that rotten decision.

      • Good that this is at least happening at the state level.
I can imagine a little backstory:
The powerful anti-wolf cattlemen’s lobby is likely getting as emaciated as their cows these days. Due to the catastrophic drought their herds have been significantly depleted, having been sold off to slaughter for lack of water and grass. They can’t complain so vociferously about wolf predation on livestock that don’t have legs to stand on.
I like the parenthesis you’ve put around “Service”, frugalchariot…

I’m worried about my friends over at the National Rifle Association.

It seems they have a traitor in their midst, an interloper, a renegade who lacks the absolute firearm fealty required to be a true member of Team NRA. The group has been infiltrated by — you may want to shield your children’s eyes — a sane person.

On Friday, a post appeared on the website of the NRA’s lobbying arm that was critical of “firearm advocates” in Texas who have been carrying high-powered semi-automatic rifles into coffee shops and fast-food restaurants. They claim the protests are aimed (wink!) at making people feel more comfortable around firearms and pushing for an open-carry handgun law.

This militarization of Chipotles was described in the NRA post as “downright weird” and “downright scary.”

The post read: “while unlicensed open carry of long guns is also typically legal in most places, it is a rare sight to see someone sidle up next to you in line for lunch with a 7.62 rifle slung across his chest, much less a whole gaggle of folks descending on the same public venue with similar arms.”,0,4535832.story

    • ‘ammosexuals’
Good one fatherbob, I’m filing that away for future reference… chuckle…

  6. I see the usual republican fucks are up to their waists in shit regarding the last POW of the Afgan war. I’m reminded of this quote from Albert Camus, who shamefully is nethier taught or read…”Since when is an honest man who refuses to believe the liar a skeptic?”

      • Hey Ebb. I’m exactually where I put myself. I don’t understand why I did that, but that’s my mystery. Technology is one of my achilles heels, and that represents my disappearances. Computer interfaces I don’t recognise as real, and struggle to reconcile. Other than that it’s all good.
