The Watering Hole: Wednesday, June 25, 2014: I’m Baaaack!

Hello folks,

I see you all enjoyed my little contests while I was on vacation. Now for something completely different, or, idle musings of a demented and sacareligious mind….

Fundamental christians believe a person is created at conception.

They also believe in the resurection of the body – that is, we will all be resurrected in our physical form after everyone is raised from the dead on Judgment day.

Well, that means that there are going to be millions of fertilized eggs, persons lost by miscarriages, resurrected outside the womb.

That’s gonna smell after a couple of days…..

  1. Taking a pragmatic approach to this situation, consider that all those returned in full form from the grave would have plenty of caviar to spread on their unleavened bread.

  2. Sometimes, esp. when I look at teabaggers, Christers, radical Islamists, neo-Nazis, and all the other hate-filled dregs of human society I get the feeling that maybe the resurrection/reincarnation is already well underway. Brings to mind words of the Persian poet Omar Khayyam from nearly a millennium back:

I sent my Soul through the Invisible,
Some letter of that After-life to spell:
And by and by my Soul return’d to me,
    And answer’d “I Myself am Heav’n and Hell :”

Heav’n but the Vision of fulfill’d Desire,
And Hell the Shadow of a Soul on fire,
Cast on the Darkness into which Ourselves,
So late emerg’d from, shall so soon expire.

    • I’ll agree, the cacophony of false prophets is deafening. These bellicose voices corrupt ancient words of wisdom in their greed for the worldly security of false profits.

  3. Defiant Chris McDaniel Declines to Concede in Speech to Supporters

The more than 200 supporters gathered in the Hattiesburg Lake Terrace Convention Center were just as angry as McDaniel about the loss to Cochran, which virtually assures the 76-year-old an easy win toward a seventh term in the general election.

They cheered his defiance and chanted “Write Chris In!” as he took the stage and calling out “It’s not over Chris” and “We’re not going with Thad.”

McDaniel supporters quickly moved to consider legal challenges based on reported voting irregularities.

Senate Conservatives Fund’s Ken Cuccinelli hung up on a POLITICO reporter when asked if they would consider challenging the result in court.

Republicans always work to eliminate due process for working-class Americans, but run to the courts every time they don’t get their way. McDaniel and his supporters knew the rules going in. Mississippi Democrats that hadn’t voted in the Democratic Primary were eligible to vote in this runoff, and had every right to vote for the lesser of these two evils. I hope these sore losers do write in McDaniel in November. Maybe if the Dems could GOTV, they could steal one with a split GOP.

  4. US Economy Shrank at Steep 2.9 Percent Rate in Q1

The U.S. economy shrank at a steep annual rate of 2.9 percent in the January-March quarter as a harsh winter contributed to the biggest contraction since the depths of the recession five years ago. But the setback is widely thought to be temporary, with growth rebounding solidly since spring.

The first-quarter contraction reported Wednesday by the Commerce Department was even more severe than the 1 percent annual decline it had estimated a month ago. Two-thirds of the downward revision reflected a drop in health care spending. Another factor was a bigger trade deficit than initially estimated.

Obamacare is going to destroy America! Lower health care spending will bankrupt us all! 😀

    • I’ve never been satisfied with complex mathematical interactions getting boiled down to one number, as if that one number, by itself, will tell you everything you need to know about the subject. GDP is down, but there’;s a good reason for it. yet, reported all by itself, people will fill in the possible reasons themselves.

Unemployment can go down, but a single figure doesn’t tell you whether the growth was public or private sector growth. And if they don;t mention stats like 10,000 people retiring every day, it can make poor numbers look worse.

I often heard Bush 41 try to claim the economy wasn’t doing badly because worker productivity was up. Productivity (another misleading economic term) is, generally speaking, the amount produced divided by the number of people working. (More or less, but you get the idea.) Well if you want A/B to go up, you can either increase A (the amount produced) or decrease B (the number of people working.) By-and-large, Productivity went up under Bush because fewer people were making the same amount of stuff (more or less.) it definitely wasn’t because the same number of people produced more stuff, which is what they want you to think.

We need to stop letting the media distract people with meaningless single-number indicators of how their lives are doing. Life is not made up of a single number.

  5. U.S. Justices Limit Police Right To Search Cell Phones

The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that police officers usually need a warrant before they can search an arrested suspect’s cellphone.

The court said on a 9-0 vote that the right of police to search an arrested suspect at the scene without a warrant does not extend in most circumstances to data held on a cell phone

      • Dunno. I’m still trying to wrap my mind around why Scalia, Alito and Thomas were the dissent on Aereo, the streaming TV service. That went 6-3 against Aereo.

  6. Dear Kim Jong Un,

I’m sorry you’re so butt sore over a fictitious movie that is played by B movie actors doing a talk show however: Our country has some unique rights and liberties and one of them happens to be freedom of speech.
We are keenly aware of your countries oppression of the aforementioned right and, that is probably why the only tourist your country has ever seen is Dennis Rodman.
Freedom of speech is also interpreted as freedom of expression which, could easily explain your idiotic haircut.
You see Kim (you don’t mind if I call you Kim instead of “Dear Leader” do you?) freedom of speech is what lets me write this and not have to worry about ending up in one of your charming little gulags of political dissidents.
Threatening an act of war over a Seth Rogan movie is also a joke because Seth Rogan movies are, well, for lack of better words, something of a joke in and of themselves.
You see Kim, the way I see it, you feel free to express yourself.
Apparently no one has had the balls to tell you that your haircut is almost as stupid as Dennis Rodman wearing a wedding dress but, we won’t go into that. Dennis can take the dress off. It will take longer for your hair to grow out.
He’s your friend and that’s the beauty of the U.S.A.
You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you probably can’t pick Dennis Rodman’s nose.

    The Vinylspear

P.S. I don’t think our president takes you too seriously either. It may be the haircut or the simple fact that you are an idiot.

  7. What about those that were “raptured”? I’m guessing that they won’t rise from the dead as they will have already gone to their place of happiness. This notion of heaven above and hell below is so bizarre. If heaven is above, then the stars and other planets are heaven. Hell maybe below because it certainly is hot in the center of the earth. 🙂

  8. Not at work tonight.

    Koch Owned and Operated

    By Markos Moulitsas

Then again, Koch-aligned groups have sided with McDaniel in the Mississippi GOP Senate primary. Why? Because Koch insurance companies would stand to directly benefit from higher flood insurance rates in Mississippi, and incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran stood in their way.

Birchers Charles and David Koch must really be pissed that blacks in Mississippi thwarted their ‘upset victory’. It’s starting to look like any time the TeaPublics have a chance against a GOP incumbent, their money will be behind it.

  9. 105mm ‘Gun Show Accident’

A homeowner in Wyandotte, Oklahoma is awaiting damage assessments after an artillery shell entered his home.

It was fired at the Oklahoma Full Auto Shoot and Trade Show on Saturday, around 3 miles a way.

Homeowner Gene Kelley could not fathom what he found after hearing a large crash inside his home.

“It’s unbelievable,” Kelley said. “Unless you were here to see it or see the pictures I’ve got, you would not believe how huge this thing is.”

A 105 howitzer artillery shell, 14 and a half inches long and 3 and a half inches across, was lying on his bedroom floor.

It entered from the outside wall, hit the ceiling, and damaged another wall, all while he and his wife were home.

“Fortunately, nobody was hurt,” Kelley said.

      • Well, for one thing, they upset the balance of the projectile when they removed the explosives. That could have contributed to its erratic flight. But that begs the question: Why fire a projectile at all? If the shell wasn’t supposed to explode on impact with a target, wouldn’t it have been prudent to just use a ‘blank’ charge, so it would make a nice, loud boom, and send nothing flying but a few bits of paper wadding?

        • And, for another thing, there is just no rational reason why a civilian, much less a crowd of them presumably with their screaming brats in tow, should ever be within 50 yards of a live artillery piece. It’s sheer madness.
