Sunday Roast: Full Circle?

Stephen Fry discusses the power of language in our seeming quest to destroy “the other.”

I had a facebook “friend” who would respond to some of my posts in the most vile manner, and I asked her why she was being so vicious and aggressive.  She said she just didn’t think Liberals were moral people, so she didn’t really care about their [my] feelings.  WOW.

Like he says, once you dehumanize someone else, it’s possible to do just about anything to them — and it’s absolutely true.

This is our daily open thread — Be careful out there, people.

  1. According to the Fox News panel, Obama doesn’t talk to Dems in Congress or care enough about what they want, but he’s delaying violating immigration laws until after the election to save their campaigns.

  2. Fareed Zakaria just ‘reported’ a seemingly startling statistic:
    Social Security is in trouble, because in 2030 there will be 2 workers per retiree, while in 1960 there were 5 workers per retiree. Of course, he neglected to compare the differences in contribution between those dates. After all, Tip O’Neill and Reagan doubled the Social Security contribution in 1983, so today’s worker is worth double to the system what he was in 1960. 5-4 isn’t nearly so alarming, and if income had tracked increased productivity in the US after the 1970s, the system would be so flush with cash that the cons would be campaigning on social security tax cuts, which they can’t do while claiming it is going broke. The only factor cutting Social Security contributions is stagnation of income for the 99%. The wealthy should have their Social Security taxes raised to at least make up the difference, since they are realizing all the gains from the post recession economy.

    • Never forget his death. I was a Jr. in HS in a small MN town that was about as close to the state line on the north side as Clear Lake Ia. was to the south of it. Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, the Big Bopper J.P.Richardson — the end of an era.

  3. (hurry autumn and blow all the smoke away)

    “Fall, leaves, fall”

    Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
    Lengthen night and shorten day;
    Every leaf speaks bliss to me
    Fluttering from the autumn tree.
    I shall smile when wreaths of snow
    Blossom where the rose should grow;
    I shall sing when night’s decay
    Ushers in a drearier day.
    ~ Emily Bronte

    • He’s full of himself. Has no idea about the real world.
      Everything has been handed to him ALL of his life.
      As for Obama doesn’t play well with Congress…Mittens has that backward.

    • “Sparkling, tap ,or toilet?”

      A police officer came
      to my house & asked me
      where I was between 5 & 6

      He seemed irritated when
      I said, “kindergarten.”

  4. President Obama’s Full Interview With Chuck Todd

    Here’s the full transcript of the President’s interview with NBC dunderhead Chuck Todd, and if you want to know why I refer to Todd that way, here’s a perfect example.

    Obama mentioned Syria specifically four times before Chuck Todd blurted out, “You’ve not said the word, ‘Syria,’ so far in our conversation.”

    Chuck will never make it on MtP, he’s too easily caught in his own trap!
