Watering Hole: Thursday, October 9, 2014 – Sisters

The three Sisters volcanoes tower over the cities of Sisters and Bend, Oregon.  This photo was taken from the lava fields that were deposited between 1300 and 3000 years ago from the volcano named Belknap.  Only two mountains can be seen from this area.  The volcano with the most glaciers, is the Middle Sister.  The other, is the North Sister.  The South Sister which is considered to be an “active” volcano cannot be seen from these lava fields.

  1. Considered to be 40,000 years old…not bad for a world that been around for 6,000.

  2. The Sisters area is very special, wonderful forests and geology. Your photos look like they were taken at McKenzie Pass, one of the best scenic roads EVER!

  3. Thanks for taking up my posting slack, Cats. Hoping I can get back on the job by month’s end — so far so good, but will know more by the end of next week.

    Meanwhile, here’s an interesting statistic:

Since the December 14 2012 incident at Sandy Hook school, 57,650 Americans have been killed by guns. In that same time frame 1 has died from Ebola.

Sounds like we need “open carry” of Ebola in order to even things out a little. Wingnuts unite!

  4. I have always been drawn to and fascinated by volcanoes. I’ve been to Hawaii several times, and always have to visit the big island and pay my devotions to Pele…

    • Said the source, in the quote of the week: “A knife-wielding intruder can make it into the White House, but they stop Vera Wang?”

    • Poor AIG, they’ve had it SO hard. And if the woe about their CEO’s investments losing money isn’t enough, consider this latest horror:

Noah’s Ark Theme Park Loses $18M In Tax Breaks Unless They Hire Atheists

The $18 million in tax incentives offered to AIG (the eternal insurance company) for building the Ark Experience have been controversial from the day the Kentucky Tourism Department gave preliminary approval for them in July. These kind of tax breaks are pretty typical for those looking to build attractions, on the basis that they make for jobs and tourism dollars. Such sites are rewarded a 25 percent sales tax rebate.

However, that tax credit has since been put on hold…because of a job application.

The application for a computer design artist was found on AIG’s site and sent along to the state by Americans United for the Separation of Church and state. The application for The Ark Experience was pretty standard, except for two little requirements:

A letter of “Salvation Testimony,” and a “Creation Belief Statement.”

      Gee. How sad is that?

      • Their perpetual self-victimization is among their least appealing traits. And, considering the the whole lot of them are about as appealing as dog crap, is quite an accomplishment.

        • “The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father, in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter. But may we hope that the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in these United States will do away with this artificial scaffolding…” –Thomas Jefferson

So far, no good. Of course, it’s only been 200+ years, so . . .

  5. It doesn’t take much to restore my faith in humanity.

I went out for one last flight with my old plane before I start tearing stuff out for the new one and a local police officer, who I’ve met before, stopped to watch me fly. So? I told him that I had a unpleasant encounter with one of his colleagues and was “saved” from desperation by another and would like to know with whom I could register a complaint against cop #1 and forward a thank you to cop #2. He gave me the card for the public relations officer and gave me his own card in case I need a voice on the inside, so to speak.

I’ve had almost nothing but good experiences with police officers in the past and, hopefully, taking a little proactive action will make me more comfortable with them in the future. Feeling the lump rise in my throat before I recognized Bill, the one who enjoys watching me fly, is something i definitely want to get over. Plus. I want to talk him into getting a plane so I have an ally if someone ever decides that they don’t want me flying in the local park!

    • There was someone flying a Hobie Hawk at our local soccer field a couple of days ago.
I didn’t think they still existed.
Very distinct wing, hard to mistake.

      • Oh! How I miss my Hobie Hawk. I bought one, for a song, from a guy who insisted that it “couldn’t thermal”. It thermaled just fine as long as one kept the speed up. I had several flights where I had to dive back home because the radio battery was getting low. I sure would like to find another cheap one and stick a modern electric motor in it.

I’m also taking a page from the Hobie Hawk on my new glider. I’m going to cut rib bays out of the sheeted foam wing to save weight and increase visibility though I’m not going to try and duplicate the graceful, and unmistakable, curved dihedral.

  6. In a published interview, Ozzy Osbourne discusses the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11, 2001 — which, apparently, he found exciting.

“I wasn’t scared, I was excited!” he said. “It was my kind of craziness, you know.”

The 70’s were rough on Ozzy.

  7. Great news from the Supreme Court for a change: a late-night order blocking the implementation of Wisconsin’s Republican-sponsored voter ID law.

The right wing in Texas also suffered a major setback in their voter suppression efforts today: Federal Court Blocks Texas Voter ID Law, Calling It a ‘Poll Tax’.
