The Watering Hole, October 27th, 2014: Mutants are Cool

I don’t normally click on any of those groups of six ads that seem to be unavoidable on most websites, but when I saw the following photo, I just HAD to:

Horse or Zebra?

Horse or Zebra?

The website, brainjet.com, didn’t answer the caption’s question, but I’d say it’s a zebra with a cool-looking color mutation…which, of course, was the title of the slideshow: “13 Naturally Color-Mutated Animals.” While there were some that I might call into question (for instance, the quality of the “pink elephant” photo was too poor), many were beautiful and marvelous. Go ahead and check them out, here are some of my favorites:
Brown Striped Zebra (Zebra Erythrism)

The first two were for Zooey. The next one is for Pachy:
Pink Dragonfly

This next photo was called a “Piebald Deer”, which is erroneous: “Piebald” (at least in horse terminology) describes a white coat with random irregular black patches; “Skewbald” describes a white coat with random irregular brown patches. So the deer in this pic is actually a skewbald, not a piebald:

This one’s for me, since my ‘toon representation in our header is the majestic tiger (thank you, Paul!):

And just a few more that were cool:
Half-white Peacock

Pink Grasshopper (sounds like a drink!)

Enjoy the rest of the slide show. I did!

This is our daily open thread – feel free to discuss whatever you want.

  1. Speaking of mutants, I think I finally understand why I’ve never seen a photo of a Republican who gives a shit about the well-being of ordinary people, or even cares about the future of his/her country. That’s one mutation that’s even more rare than a pink grasshopper.

    • There used to be Republicans who cared about ordinary people. They were forced to leave the Party when True Christians (their lable, not mine) gained control.

      • Curious how once the ‘True Christians’ infused the party with all of that Christian “love of God” and “caring for others” the GOP became the party of hate, fear, and greed. Something doesn’t seem to fit with that “Love thy Brother as thyself” thesis.

        • This Bill Maher clip about Kansas sums up precisely the point you’re making about the “Christian” voters. A candidate dared go to a strip club in his 20’s, making him “unfit” to serve. While Brownback (bleeped) the entire Kansas economy and that’s okay with voters.

          Some values.

          • Yep. It’s OK to screw everyone, but a Democrat taking a peek at a lady? SIN SIN SIN!!

Overall, I still maintain that the Right Wing political movement in the US is approximately parallel to the Fascist movements in Europe in the first half of the last century. It’s based on the merger of corporate power (and money) with State authority and power (thanks, SCOTUS), all at the expense of the (always expendable) individual. The aside to all of that is that it suddenly becomes fair for those in power to pick out a target group on which to impose their (intrinsic but irrational) hatred.

In such a system, ultimate failure is guaranteed, and we are currently on a steady track toward those consequences. Finality will depend on when it is that the “movement” gains full power of the government. Next week just may prove to be giant step number one; if so step number two won’t be far behind.

            • The people leading the movement are definitely reminiscent of fascists but the masses they manipulate remind me more of the Biblical Israelites. Textbook case of Stockholm Syndrome.

            • “Stockholm Syndrome” indeed. It’s hard to figure why so many are so willing to submit — I’m thinking there is, somewhere in the human genome, a genetic malformation that demands fear be the solution to all sensual input including the viewing of one’s own shadow. How else to explain today’s GOP?? And lucky for the tyrant, fear is an easy cow to milk.

      • True Christians believe about caring for others, as long as the “other” is also a True Christian. Everyone else has been deceived by Satan and are being rightly punished by God.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that the Bible refers to believers as sheep, for they, like sheep, blindly follow their leaders, even unto being fleeced. They have been taught that the rich are rich because God blessed them, and if only they believe in God enough – i.e. by accepting as true every statement of their leaders, they, too, will be blessed with riches. And, the more people they exclude – people unwilling to subscribe to ever restricting beliefs, the more ‘purified’ their group becomes.

They live in a faith-based reality, and any fact that contradicts their reality comes from Satan, so they are taught. These “True Christians” are the foot-soldiers, controlled by the rich, to be employed against all “non-churched” peoples. Some have already begun – witness the murders of doctors performing legal abortions.

There’s a Holy War brewing, and whether True Christians prevail or not, the ruling class will make billions, if not trillions, in weapons sales.

The “Church” is becoming one of the largest NRA ally. I “Christian” acquaintance recently posted “Lock and load people!” after the Canadian Parliament shooting incident.

    • Aren’t condoms made from synthetic rubber which itself is an artificial elastomer mainly synthesised from petroleum byproducts?

If that’s the case, then oil investments must be the absolute pinnacle of SIN!! Lightning bolt sure to follow.

  2. I have to admit, I was unaware of important details about the whistleblower thing. OTOH, when you don’t believe the official avenues of support will really support your whistleblowing, you have to leak. And if what you leak reveals wrongdoing by the govt, you shouldn’t be vilified. Your experiences and reasons for leaking should be taken into consideration of new legislation to offer protections you had reason to believe were lacking.

      • It’s a bit odd. One would think that her PAC would enable her to keep a full time makeup artist on staff and still rent the occasional limo. Is it possible that she’s just barely smart enough to realize she should keep her accounts flush for when she inevitably has to fork over a few-hundred grand to bail one of her little darlings out of jail?

  3. RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Camel cigarette maker Reynolds American Inc. is snuffing out smoking in its offices and buildings.

The nation’s second-biggest tobacco company informed employees Wednesday that beginning next year, the use of traditional cigarettes, cigars or pipes will no longer be permitted at employee desks or offices, conference rooms, hallways and elevators. Lighting up already is prohibited on factory floors and in cafeterias and fitness centers.

The no-smoking policy will go into effect once Reynolds builds indoor smoking areas for those still wanting to light up indoors, spokesman David Howard said.

“We believe it’s the right thing to do and the right time to do it because updating our tobacco use policies will better accommodate both non-smokers and smokers who work in and visit our facilities,” Howard said. “We’re just better aligning our tobacco use policies with the realities of what you’re seeing in society today.”……cough….cough..

  4. Oh Em Gee!! It helps if I look at the front page in the morning. 😆

Awesome zebra photos, Jane! Nice one of Pachy, too, but he’s always photogenic. 😉
