The Watering Hole, Saturday, June 6th, 2015: Penny For Your Thoughts?

Just a few of my thoughts (they’re free of charge, which is about what they’re worth), then a good read from Bill Moyers.

On Caitlyn Jenner: If she’s happy and can stand the heat, good for her. It’s just a shame that most other transgender persons probably do not have the kind of money needed for such an extensive makeover.

On the Duggars: I think there’s a lot more there there, and I really hope that this sick, twisted version of a “Christian family” gets investigated thoroughly. I did not watch, or see a whole transcript of, the family’s interviews on Fox, but I did catch some snippets here and there. I’ve heard that the “mother” was terribly creepy, and some argue that it was a good thing that Megyn Kelly sort of sat back and let the Duggars talk without too many challeges, as it exposed to all just how sickly disturbed and disturbing these perverted “people” are. So, does anyone think that fans of their show will finally start to feel uncomfortable, at the least, about holding the Duggars up as a shining example of the American Christian family?

On the 2016 election in general: I don’t know if I can stand the next year-and-a-half of the media forcing the conversation in the wrong direction and, in many respects, helping to choose the nominees simply by their self-indulgent coverage. Not to mention that the idea of another 26 or so Republican debates to be covered makes me want to crawl back into bed, pull the covers over my head, and sleep ’til 2017.

On the 2016 Democratic nominee: The likely inevitability of Hillary Clinton as the Democratic candidate for the 2016 Presidential election does NOT sit well with me. This country needs more – and better – than a continuation of the status quo, which, in my opinion, is what Hillary represents.

Which leads me to Bill Moyers, and his essay on Bernie Sanders titled “Turn Left on Main Street.” Mr. Moyers voices many of the same opinions that we all hold dear. A couple of excerpts:

“The progressive agenda isn’t “left wing.” (Can anyone using the term even define what “left wing” means anymore?) The progressive agenda is America’s story — from ending slavery to ending segregation to establishing a woman’s right to vote to Social Security, the right to organize, and the fight for fair pay and against income inequality. Strip those from our history and you might as well contract America out to the US Chamber of Commerce the National Association of Manufacturers, and Karl Rove, Inc.

At their core, the New Deal, Fair Deal, and Great Society programs were aimed at assuring every child of a decent education, every worker a decent wage, and every senior a decent retirement; if that’s extreme, so are the Declaration of Independence and the Preamble to the Constitution.”

That’s exactly right, Mr. Moyers. So why should we Americans settle for anything less?

This is our daily Open Thread–what’s on your mind today?

  1. What? Where’s the opinion of Dennis Hastert? Bringing up the Duggars and leaving out the ‘Coach’ just isn’t right! 😉

    • Oops, I’d already forgotten about him! Damn, I could have done an entire thread about the Republican hypocrisy in defending both Hastert and the Duggars.

        • Oh, how i would love to. I’ve been doing some research this week. You’ll never guess where. The Bible. You know those quotes you always see from

Leviticus 20:13 If a man lies with another man as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood guilt shall be upon them.

but you never hear them quote

Leviticus 18:22 You shall not lie with a man as one does with a woman. It is an abomination.

          the penalty for which is

Leviticus 18:29 For whoever shall commit any of these abominations, those persons who commit them shall be cut off from among their people.

They’re called abominations in both parts, but the penalties are totally different. Why?

I have more to say about it, but I’ll save it for my post. As usual, I’ll post it to my own blog first if that’s before Monday morning, and I can let you know here.

        • I believe that the direct translation, from the original German, is “the always nasty Sandy Rios”. She could even challenge Coultergeist and the always nasty Laura Ingraham for the title of the meanest mean girl in the class.

  2. In the Bill Moyers piece, if Congressman Delaney thinks Progressives are “some of the loudest voices in the room”, then I say it’s about fucking time!

I’d like to see the comparison between Wall Street and Main Street be modified to the comparison between Wall Street and Maple Street. In most towns, Main Street is full of banks, accountants, lawyers, and insurance offices.

  3. Special shout out to Zxbe! The Zoo tools domain expired yesterday!

  4. I’m watching a new formula of racing called Formula E. The cars are all electric and look like F1 cars, but make a completely different sound when they accelerate! The leaderboard shows the available battery remaining, and roughly halfway through the race, when the drivers pit, they actually change cars rather than ‘refuel’ the one they start the race in. Most of the driver names are familiar to me, having come from F1, Indycar and endurance racing.

I should think developing these motors to increase efficiency would transfer to street vehicles over time.

  5. It is high time we held the Duggars up as the epitome of Christian/Republican Family Values and a shining example of the heart and soul of the Republican Party. The Duggars represent the Christian base of the Republican Party; the hand-picked chosen ones by the leisure/ruling class.

    • …the hand-picked chosen ones by the leisure/ruling class.

The Family Values people may want to do some vetting before holding molesters up as ‘god’s chosen’.

      • They already did. All that matters is that they say all the right words to show they are True Christians and the most heinous of acts are forgiven. They are the model of what our Christian Nation should be. Because if we were all like the Duggars, then there would not be global warming. Or floods. Or fires. Or earthquakes. If we were all like the Duggars, it would be like heaven on earth.

  6. Pomp and circumstance at its finest at the Biden funeral. For a second I thought they had the tape from my mother’s funeral of me singing that Ave Maria!

    • There may be some missing context here (I hope) but why this is considered “an amazing act of charity” is completely beyond me. On its face it looks ignorantly condescending.

      • Unfortunately, we don’t have another minute. In less time than that, our habitat will no longer sustain us. IOW, if we don’t do something now, we’ll all be dead in less than a minute.

    • ‘Honest Ma, I didn’t mean to ruin my dinner. I just opened my mouth to laugh and this fish jumped in!’

    • Is Gomer the craziest POS in Congress or the craziest POS ever in Congress? I’m just asking a question. Plus; it would be nice if he could claim the title held by Batscat Bachmann outright.

    • I guess I’m a “commie” ‘or worse’ then, cuz I’d love to see that horror aka second amendment repealed and bullets/cartridges/ etc. made illegal. The ammosexuals could keep their guns. I’d hate to have to finance all the psychological work and the Viagra if confiscation was the rule.

  7. If you’re innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, why aren’t you entitled to vote unless you’re declared ineligible in a similar court of law? Why isn’t the burden of proof on the state instead of the other way around?

    • GOP SOP. Make it harder for law-abiding people to vote while making it easier for criminals and nut jobs to buy guns. Those two issues alone would be enough to sink the GOP forever in a sane country.

  8. What’s Giving Bees Dementia?

From pesticides to possible cell phone radiation, the causes of bee population decline are an on-going debate.

Now there’s another thing the buzzy little insect has to fear, dementia.

A new study, published on PLoS ONE, says aluminum, “one of the most significant environmental contaminant of recent times,” could be responsible in the pollinators decline.

So, is this real, or just an excuse to get Monsanto off the hook for neonicotinoid pesticides on their seed?

    • It could be both. Grandma had a fetish for aluminum cookware and she was mad as a hatter. She was never officially diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or any other form of dementia but for the last 15 years of her life there was an even chance she would think I was her long-lost brother.

  9. All the tv folk picked American Pharoah, but the two handicappers, who were totally wrong at The Preakness, both picked Frosted.

    • OK. If the Belmont can play a recording of Sinatra’s New York, New York, why can’t Indy use a recording of Jim Nabors’ Back Home Again In Indiana?

  10. Bank of Canada Urges Star Trek Fans To Stop ‘Spocking’ Their Fivers

Bank of Canada is pleading with Star Trek fans to stop “Spocking” its five dollar bills. Since Leonard Nimoy’s death, Canadian folks have been “Spocking” the hell out of the five dollar bill that features a portrait of Canada’s seventh prime minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier.

Sir Wilfrid now sports, on certain bills at least, pointy ears, the signature Vulcan haircut and eyebrows and Spock’s mantra “Live long and prosper.”

    This looks like fun! 😀

  11. Indycar is trying to make Linc Chafee happy. Tonight they’re racing 600 kilometers just for him. 😀

  12. American PHAROH wins triple crown. Hmmm. Does that mean Obama is in ISIS’ pocket? That he’s supporting the Muslim takeover of Amurkkka?

Rick Wiles: Kentucky Derby Proves Obama Is Demonic Precursor To The Antichrist

Wiles agreed that Obama is bringing America down and is a forerunner of the Antichrist. As proof, he cited the results of the Kentucky Derby: “He has a spirit of Antichrist operating in him, he is America’s pharaoh. Interestingly, the horse American Pharaoh won the horse race Saturday, another little sign to America, there’s been many of them over the years since Obama’s been in.”

    Stay tuned.

    • Just when you think you have heard the craziest, stupidest, thing ever… Some rightwhiner starts talking again.

  15. On FtN, Christie just said the election is eight months from today. What election is he talking about?

  16. Rick Perry, on FtN, was asked how to improve the economy, said that businesses and individuals would like to get loans but Dodd-Frank won’t let the banks loan to them. A minute later when asked what to do about Wall Street: “Regulate Them”
Dickerson then asked him what did he think Dodd-Frank was, if it wasn’t regulation.
The glasses haven’t made him smarter.
