Saturday morning, Bree Newsome took matters into her own hands and removed the Confederate flag — a flag that celebrates a heritage of racism, slavery, and treason — from in front of the South Carolina State House.
Newsome and others calling themselves “concerned citizens” released a statement explaining, “Deciding to do what the SC Legislature has thus far neglected to do, the group took down the symbol of white supremacy that inspired the massacre, continued to fly at full mast in defiance of South Carolina’s grief, and flew in defiance of everyone working to actualize a more equitable Carolinian future.”
The flag was soon replaced, but the image of Newsome climbing that pole and removing it is indelible.

I had not realized this earlier, but Bree Newsome is a fairly well known writer, artist, and activist, who traces her influences back to women like Octavia Butler. I’m on my tablet, and away from “The Beast” (my gigantic laptop), and I’ve never figured out out to copy and paste a link into a blog comment such as this. But I encourage everyone to do a search on Newsome’s name and learn more about her.

No, the problem is not a general one of copying and pasting, which is trivial on my laptop. The problem is that I’m not on my laptop, and this little Android tablet adds a few layers of challenges in terms of bringing data from one application &/or window into another. This is pretty much a “one thing at a time” gadget.

Well, in fairness, the early NASA attempts suffered their share of setbacks. My dad would tell the joke about little Johnny being sent home from school. Johnny, it seems, learned how to count from his dad, who worked for NASA: “10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, oh shit.”
NASA didn’t have many payloads explode like this. Failures were mostly in testing, and the taxpayers shared in the loss. Privatizing space delivery puts the ISS mission at risk, when the provisions and oxygen fail to reach the humans who need them.
I’ve finally concluded, after several moments of deep thought, that the Confederate Stars and Bars is indeed symbolic, VERY symbolic, actually, and that with every passing day it becomes an even more powerful symbol — of SOUTHERN WHITE INFERIORITY — whether on a flag pole, a license plate, bumper sticker . . . ANYWHERE — that’s what it

I remember when I was a boy scout we camped frequently on the site of the Civil War Battle of South Mountain. Most boys wanted to be on the Confederate side so they could show off their moments of death. Moments of death means each dead Confederate had to run ahead of the advancing Union forces to be shot again and again, until it was time to eat!
