The Watering Hole, Tuesday June 30, 2015 – Environmental News and Food Politics

A way-better solar cell made from a mineral discovered back in the 1839 in Russia. Would replace silicon.

Perovskite-based panels may revolutionise solar energy

  1. “a revolutionary technique that allows solar cells to be produced via traditional printing machines”

With a printer that is solar powered and a couple reams of the material that these cells are printed on one might be tempted to relocate off the grid.

  2. (oh, here you are nonewhere and the Tuesday theme)

Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday ended months of speculation by signing off on contentious legislation — Senate Bill 277 — that requires almost all California schoolchildren to by fully vaccinated in order to attend public or private school, regardless of their parents’ personal or religious beliefs.

    • I have noticed that everyone ‘sticks’ their post, but quite often they don’t unstick. Why make them ‘sticky’ at all? It seems to create confusion when this kind of situation occurs. Let the most recent post be the top one, without the priority?

      • We probably should do away with sticking posts. The author of each day’s post is supposed to un-stick the previous stuck posts, but since Jane and I seem to be the only ones doing that, I agree we should forget about sticking posts.

        But that’s just me.

        • I stick ’em. One time this spring I forgot, and in the morning when it should have been up top it was down in the middle somewhere, and when I found it a quick edit made it sticky and up on the top. Ever since I make sure to stick them and no problems so far. As to how the whole thing works, I have no idea.

          • I think we need to stick them, otherwise they can slide down the page. I als don’t think it is necessary to un-stick them, because a subsequent post sticky’d for the next day will assume its top position I believe.

            • I host a chat thread/informal contest on an RC airplane site and I need the moderators to make it a sticky. I just can’t bring myslef to ask “Would you please stick this thread”?

    • If avarice didn’t trump idiocy he wouldn’t have ever made enough money to declare bankruptcy once much less three times.

    • Many of my neighbors are Hispanic. Esther is Mexican and so livid about Trump’s disparaging remarks she hopes he hasn’t eaten any food since a majority of farm workers are Mexican!
Trump has two feet in his mouth and yet, he still speaks and turns off people.

  3. This will certainly surprise you.///

N.J. Gov. Christie announces 2016 Republican presidential bid

    • (She wears blinders)

I didn’t want my decision to be seen as hateful. I know some people will look at it like that, but this wasn’t easy. It wasn’t a decision I made lightly. And I do not hate anybody.

  4. The religious right is doing a LOT of cherry picking from Bible verses to slam SSM. Maybe they’d also prefer these hetero “laws.”

    Your wife isn’t a virgin?:

“(20) But if the thing is true, that evidence of virginity was not found in the young woman, (21) then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done an outrageous thing in Israel by whoring in her father’s house.”

    • The various laws in the Bible sure do contradict each other, as far as what penalty to issue.

Since the Conservative Christians’ faith is based on the Bible being the inerrant word of God, and since it contains so many contradictions, the only logical conclusion would be that the premise of it being the inerrant word of God must be false.

I’m sure Gary can explain it better than I.

    • This is what you get when you take your moral code from a bunch of bronze-age, semi-literate, desert roaming, goat-shaggers …..

  5. Christie made his campaign announcement in the gymnasium at his old school, Livingston High. Wouldn’t it have been more logical if he made it in the cafeteria?

    • Either way the teacher’s union said it was at worst hypocrisy at best intimidation

    • A rainbow is a rainbow! Neither gay nor straight!
Will a rainbow in the sky increase terrorism threat?

      • Ok, so now the terror threat alerts go from green to yellow to orange to red to:

  6. With all of his bad press and blunders, let’s see if Trump’s buddy Geraldo Rivera can back him up:

“There has not been this kind of excitement in the city since — in a very different way — 9/11.”

    Oh my.

  8. The Donald sues Univision for $500 million. This:

“The 19-page lawsuit accuses Univision of a “thinly veiled attempt” to stifle Trump’s freedom of speech in order to boost Democratic frontrunner Hilary Clinton. The network’s principal owner, Haim Saban, is a Clinton fundraiser, according to the lawsuit.”

LaughOutLoud. If Donald hadn’t disparaged immigrants the show would have gone on!

    • OMG – did a lawyer prep that lawsuit? if so, how’s he going to avoid sanctions for a frivolous lawsuit? The First Amendment doesn’t apply to non-government actors.

  9. The U.S. Women’s National team is headed to the Women’s World Cup final after a showdown with the powerful German team turned into a 2-0 romp. The U.S. team will face either Japan or England in Sunday’s match, which is set for 4 p.m. in Vancouver.

  10. Ben Carson says that he wants “Congress to make sure deeply held religious views are respected and protected.”

So I assume that means he wants “Congress to make sure deeply held [Muslim] religious views are respected and protected” all across the US so that those who wish to live by Sharia Law will NEVER have that liberty trampled upon. Right? Uh huh.

    • Those running for the highest office in the land should be required to know the Constitution:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

      • But see, if you say gays can get married, that can be the same as “prohibiting the free exercise” of the religion where God says you gotta hate gays since you’re not allowed to say you hate them anymore. That’s Christian persecution, and will cause god to destroy Amurkkka for obvious reasons.

Brings up a question: has god destroyed Ireland yet?

  11. Oh dear! Now Ms. Palin is claiming that her “disappointing” pregnancy was “actually planned”. Was it planned by both participants? And, funny, I don’t recall there being any loopholes about premarital sex even if at least one of the participants is trying to get knocked up. The one thing that’s clear is that the gal who receives speaking fees for preaching abstinence and then announced her pregnancy on her effing blog is, for some reason, a victim because people reported the story that she released all by herself.

  12. BREAKING: African American Church In South Carolina, Previously Burned Down By The KKK, Is On Fire

The prominent African American church was burned down by the KKK in 1995. The cause of this latest fire is unknown.

There have been a string of fires at African American churches throughout the south since 9 people were gunned down at Emanuel A.ME. Church in Charleston, allegedly by a 21-year-old tied to white supremicists. At least three of the incidents have been determined to be the result of arson.

  13. Must see rant from Cenk. NSFW but any legitimate “news” network in the country would serve their viewers well to play the entire clip or, at the very least, link to it on their web sites.
