Sunday Roast: Labor Day — More than a sale at the mall

I know it’s a day early, but it’s just a short video on Labor Day, from the History Channel, so take a few minutes to watch it.  I’ll wait!

Hey, isn’t it AWESOME that the State of Oregon was the first to legalize Labor Day as a holiday in 1887?  I’m not sure I’ve said this before, but I love Oregon!!

Labor unions fought hard for the workers, and we can thank them for the eight-hour work day, weekends, better wages, safer working conditions, pensions, and more.

Unfortunately, corporate America/the ruling class/the 1% succeeded in making “union” a dirty word, and pitted workers against one another to help them forget that unions protect the workers themselves, and severely diminished unions in this country.

So enjoy your day off on Monday, even if you have to hit the mall for back to school supplies, but while you’re there, spare a thought for those who worked so hard to get you that day off — and all your other days off.

This is our daily open thread — Talk among yourselves.

    • No, no, no, this was just a preview for your masterpiece, Wayne! I didn’t want to say so in the post, just in case you wanted to go on a rant about people who don’t know how to drive on holiday weekends. 😀

  1. Not much to report so far. I only caught the second half of Fox News Sunday, due to Formula One, and then was interrupted during that. Palin was on State Of The Union, and the Cheneys were on Fox, claiming Obama gave the Iranians too good a deal.

    • Amongst the gibberish from Palin during her Jake Tapper interview:
“I took Spanish in high school and I took French in high school. Shouldn’t have taken them both because I got them all mixed up by the time I was graduating.”

This also explains why she still can’t express herself in English, or as she says, ‘American’.

  2. Speaking of labor day, wages, and back to school, it turns out that kids who win the wealth lottery (are born well off) also win the standardized testing lottery. Wendy Lecker notes that, “Decades of testing evidence show that the only stable correlation that exists, whether it is the CMTs or the SATs and likely the SBACs, is between test scores and wealth.” In addition, something we’ve long known but which is continually reconfirmed, “Two studies, by St. Louis Federal Reserve and by the Boston Federal Reserve, demonstrate that family wealth is a determining factor in life success.”

H/t to Diane Ravitch for this; her post on the subject may be found here: http://dianeravitch.net/2015/09/06/wendy-lecker-education-in-the-age-of-robber-barons/

  3. FYI – I will be posting a “Recipe Share” once/month on the first Saturday of the month. If you have recipes that you would like to share with others, this will be the place for posting them. It’s a non-politcal thread. A place where we can rest our minds away from the stress of politics. The tomato soup recipe that I posted is a winner.

  4. Compassionate, thoughtful, and willing to provide a solution…

There would be “temporary shelters to house the people, then you start employing the people to build housing, schools, universities, hospitals.

He conceded such a plan could face challenges, including the likely difficulty of persuading Greece or Italy to sell an island, and figuring out jurisdiction and customs regulations.

But those who took shelter would be treated as “human beings,” he said. “The way they are being treated now, they are being treated like cattle.”

  5. Sarah Palin wants everyone to ‘speak American.’ You first, Sarah.

    Also too, this nugget:

FTA: “During the interview, Palin also criticized President Barack Obama for renaming Alaska’s Mount McKinley to Denali, saying she’d prefer the McKinley name stick. ”

Well of course she did, because Obama. Never mind the fact that Palin herslelf has always referred to the mountain as Denali.

    @1:25 in:

Oh, and I betcha can’t guess what Palin’s Secret Service codename was in the 2008 campaign. Go on, take a guess.

  6. On CNN this morning, Palin she’s expressed interest in being Secretary of Energy in a Trump Administration, ya know, the Dept. all the Repubs want to eliminate.

Well, putting her in charge of anything would pretty much destroy it within, oh, say two years.

  8. Memorial Day weekend, Nascar races at Charlotte. Fourth of July weekend, they race at Daytona. For over fifty years, Labor Day weekend meant racing at Darlington. Then in 2004, Nascar messed up. They moved the race to another weekend. Tonight, the universe will be a little more normal, as Nascar will run the Southern 500 on its traditional holiday weekend. The cars will sport a retro theme, with 1970s paint schemes for both cars and crews. They even just ran the 1979 Coke ad with Mean Joe Greene!

    • Too sad. They have no clue what Jesus said. If they did, they would remember, “Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s” and know that Jesus never condemned homosexuality. I just wish they would stop lying about their own religion.
