The Watering Hole; Friday August 26 2016; Insanity’s Latest Alt-Right Manifestations

I could not have defined the change —
Conversion of the Mind
Like Sanctifying in the Soul —
Is witnessed — not explained –
(Emily Dickinson)

Right wing Insanity — aka ‘Alt-Right’ — seems to have resulted in a Conversion of the Mind of some, a conversion that many of us, myself included, have  witnessed — not explained. I have, thankfully, no idea what it’s like to be nuts in the way the right winger whitey-boy so-called “nationalist” and his minions are nuts, and for that I thank all the gods that can ever be devised, created, or even imagined.

I could probably rant for hours on the stupidity/insanity of the nonsensical argument that white folks are superior to each and every person with brown skin — or even cockroaches, for that matter — but in the interest of genuine truth and accuracy, I’ll take a rain check and instead, simply toss out some snippets from a couple of linked articles which clearly serve to dismiss that particular argument with more (unintended) fervor than I could ever muster (this late in the week, at least).

Best advice: prepare yourself; cover your keyboard (saran recommended), and next, here goes, as they say, nothin’:

Alt-Right Founder Demands Clinton Apologize To ‘European-Americans Everywhere’

Richard Spencer, the white nationalist activist who coined the term “alt-right” to describe the emerging racist movement of which he is a leader, lashed out at Hillary Clinton today for her plans to criticize Donald Trump for his ties to the alt-right movement. . . .

From Spencer’s (National Policy Insititute) press release:

[. . .]

Hillary and her allies in “conservative” media will stop at nothing to portray peaceful European-American advocacy as a dark specter haunting America. In reality, she and her allies, especially so-called “conservatives,” are only giving comfort to the most radical and violent elements in our society.

We disavow any attempts by Clinton or any of her surrogates on the left, right, or center to tag the National Policy Institute or the work we do as violent extremism. We call on her and her allies to issue an apology to European-Americans everywhere and confront her own troubling links to extremism and the civil unrest she has stoked for months.

That one was pretty bad, but then there’s this:

While Trump Champions The Alt-Right In America, Putin Spreads Its Ideology Through Europe

For years, the GOP has been moving away from its identity as a traditional center-right party and morphing into something that more resembles the populist fringe parties of Europe.

Donald Trump’s candidacy has all but completed this transformation.

[. . .]

The alt-right thinks the mainstream conservative movement has been compromised by feminism, racial tolerance and “globalism,” and that only a reactionary, populist movement that speaks to the plight of white men can save America from political correctness and multiculturalism. The alt-right is drenched in racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia and misogyny.

[. . .]

Russia under Putin’s leadership has been promoting ultraconservative political groups in Europe with the goal of weakening the EU and the liberalism, democracy and cultural pluralism that comes with it. . . . “As European far-right leaders openly voice their support for Moscow, it would be wise to remember that Putin’s Russia is not just another ‘meddling power’ lobbying for its interests,” writes Alina Polyakova. “It is a government hostile to the West and the value system—democracy, freedom of expression, political accountability—that it represents.”

The Russian government has also sponsored a global right-wing effort to portray the U.S. and Europe as victims of cultural rot due to homosexuality, abortion rights and secular government, and Russia as the protector and preserver of traditional Christian values. . . . Trump, who aspires to be the Russian president’s “new best friend,” has praised Putin as “a leader, unlike what we have in this country,” and has seemed to side with Putin’s position on the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria and shared in fueling doubts about the future of the EU and NATO. Trump’s campaign is stacked with officials with Russian ties and, at least according to his eldest son, his businesses have seen “a lot of money pouring in from Russia.”

Sounds like maybe if we the people elect a President Trump, we might also wind up looking forward to what, the possibility of a future union between Amurkkka and Russia? “One Nation, Under __?__” . . . and “Dedicated to the proposition that all men are [NOT] created equal [and neither are their wimmin] . . .” etc.?

Oh. Ummm . . . wait.

Rats. There it is again. That old and all too familiar Danger to be Sane affliction. Sigh. Nemesis. How can we rid ourselves of it?

Insanity: Madness; state of being unsound in mind.

‘Twas a Divine Insanity —
The Danger to be Sane
Should I again experience —
‘Tis Antidote to turn —
To Tomes of solid Witchcraft –
(Emily Dickinson)

Or maybe turn / To Tomes of solid Witchcraft?

OK. I give up. Gonna move on, think of something pleasant, something civil.

Yeah. OK. Like that.

  1. Today is national dog day. I send many skritchy’s out to my canine friends
“The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog.”

    Mark Twain

  2. I’m going to visit three dogs today. Ziggy and Duchess love me to death. Mojo is a neurotic little monster who never stops the vicious snarling and barking as long as I’m nearby. He’ll even get behind a closed door with me outside and bark continuously until I leave. We are going to try to put engine mounts on the SLK today. Yesterday it was 92 with a 101 heat index. I wish she would wait for cooler weather.

  3. My Scout is the best dog ever. Sorry Jake and Cleo 🙂 On a sad dog note, my nephew had to put his dog down on Wednesday. RIP Takoda.

  4. David Duke: Donald Trump Speaks Like An Alt-Right Leader

Duke said that Clinton “is really concerned and really scared because she realizes that there’s a sleeping tiger in this country, European-Americans, that are waking up to the realization that every right they have—the real racism in America is against white people.”

I’m not sure there’s an appropriate response to this level of idiocy.

I guess I should be terrified because I’m of white-European genetic stock. Problem is, fear and I have no common ground. But if shit like this should come to define this country, I’d sure like to be outta here. Canada would be the easiest, just a hundred miles north of where my sister lives in N. Minnesota. Cold there though. Mexico would be warmer but I don’t speak much Spanish so . . . etc. Personally, I think a one-way trip to somewhere in Polynesia would be the best overall, but it sounds like a whole lotta work for an old fart like me.

Life is so unfair, esp. when there are so many stupid fuckers out there. How’d that happen? Is that the Manifest Destiny implicit as the result of Europeans on the move? Seems to make sense, all of a sudden. Scary scary.

    • When Duke and his alt-right ilk use the term “European-Americans” they’re just trying not to explicitly say “White People,” but that’s exactly what they mean. So let’s make that factoid known to everyone. (I’m going to tweet it in a minute and tag Duke.)

And Duke and his ilk forget that there were a lot of non-white people living on this continent before Europeans came along, and those white people had no right to take the land from the indigenous people here.

      • Years ago on a chat list, there was an old ‘Whitey’ judge from Roanoke VA who hated anybody that wasn’t white. One day he made a comment about colonials having to “fight savages”; made me mad, so I responded by saying that the aboriginals did absolutely nothing wrong when they resisted the European invaders. “Ralph” (the bigoted judge) came after me on that one, to the point where I’m pretty sure he needed a diaper change.

He had zero empathy for anyone not like him. Oh, and yes, he was a fundie Christer too. And Jesus was white, not a Jew, dontcha know. Jews all have a genetic legacy that makes them an inferior race and as we all know, JC was NOT inferior, so he had to be WHITE.

Fortunately, the old boy croaked not too long after I ran across him, so now at least he’s up there in heaven with god and all. Ralph did tell me that I was going to go to hell, actually, and when I told him I’d see him there, because the most hell I could ever imagine would be to have to spend eternity with assholes like him — another diaper change mandated.

Come to think of it, I’d actually kinda like to have a sit down with David Duke. I’d even promise to bring him a fresh diaper.

    • I am a European Christian American female. They only thing I’ve ever been discriminated against for being is female. Happy Equality Day!

  5. As I saw this and thought – oh, none of the Trumpistas and Teabaggers care about this stuff, the flip-flopping, the lying, because they are already in their Fox-news right-wing bubble and their attention spans are the same as Trump’s. Trump has the mind of a 5 year-old – who wakes up each day – Calvin-esque – nothing that went before has any bearing on what happens today – each day is a clean slate. Except Calvin never gets up with a mind to hurt, harm or speak hatred and bigotry…. unless you count GROSS?

Interesting isn’t it? Putin’s Russia and every right-wing, neo-Nazi across EU and USA – all playing from the same song sheet – the Horst Wessel song…..

BTW did anyone post UK’s favourite neo-Nazi – Nigel Farage and the speech he gave? My daughter was relaying to me some of the winning lines in that diatribe…. I will go look.

  6. It was predictable —

More consequence of the ‘alt-right- nonsense that seems to be driving Trump and other right wing nutcases:

Anti-Semitic Preacher Hopes Trump Will Be God’s Instrument To Finally Destroy The Jews

Among the anti-Semites and white supremacists rallying behind Donald Trump is Christian writer and conspiracy theorist Texe Marrs, who declared on a radio program recently that Trump just might be God’s instrument for finally destroying Israel and the Jews.

While speaking with Jeff Rense, a fellow right-wing extremist, Marrs made the case that Trump has a lot in common with Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, which he meant as a compliment.

After Rense complained that Hitler was one of the most unfairly maligned and misunderstood leaders in all of human history, Marrs declared that Stalin was plotting to arrest and imprison every Jew in the Soviet Union, but was murdered before he could carry it out.

But, Marrs said hopefully, Trump might be able to pick up where Hitler and Stalin left off.

Maybe it’s time to buy stock in Zyklon-B?

    • Clinton nailed this with her quote from Mexican folklore – “if I know who walks with you, then I know who you are.”

      • Yep. And when one watches who “walks with” Drumpf, things clarify rather dramatically, although I suppose that Putin might just be trying to learn how to do his hair . . . nah. Gotta be more to it than that!

  7. About Richard Bertrand Spencer — aka the HMFIC of Alt-Right. Very revealing article; here’s a taste of what he’s all about:

Spencer advocates for an Aryan homeland for the supposedly dispossessed white race and calls for “peaceful ethnic cleansing” to halt the “deconstruction” of European culture. But even some of the Europeans he lionizes have rejected him; in October 2014, his attempt to hold an NPI conference in Budapest, Hungary, resulted in his arrest and expulsion.

    In His Own Words . . .

“Our dream is a new society, an ethno-state that would be a gathering point for all Europeans. It would be a new society based on very different ideals than, say, the Declaration of Independence.”

No wonder Trump and Putin like him.

  8. Somebody please order diaper trucks for all Republicans in Congress!

Obama Just Quadrupled The World’s Largest Natural Sanctuary

President Barack Obama expanded the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in Hawaii, the White House announced Friday. The move creates the largest marine protected area in the world and massively restricts fishing and development off the northwestern Hawaiian islands.

Papahānaumokuākea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010, is a marine ecosystem of near-pristine reefs and a critical habitat for 14 million seabirds. In the past, the area has suffered from damaging international shipping activities, such as fuel spills during ship groundings and accidental discharges, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

It also faces the threats of human-caused climate change, including warming waters and acidification that bleach corals, and more powerful storms that will likely flood low-lying islands within the monument, and harm endangered bird habitat, according to a NOAA report published earlier this week.

Obama, who was born and raised in Hawaii, is set to visit the area Sept. 1, Reuters reported, to increase attention to climate change and its effects on the oceans. According to NOAA, Papahānaumokuākea is among the places most vulnerable to climate change.

  9. Is Easter this Sunday? Because it’s sure Good Friday today!

Obama’s TPP deal won’t get Senate vote this year: McConnell

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Thursday that the Senate will not vote on President Barack Obama’s signature Asian trade deal this year, punting it to the next president for changes and consideration.

The statement appeared to dash White House hopes for a vote to approve the 12-country Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement after the Nov. 8 election and before Obama leaves office in January.

McConnell, a Kentucky Republican who controls the Senate’s voting agenda, has previously said that chances for a TPP “lame duck session” vote were “slim” or “bleak.”

“The current agreement, the Trans-Pacific (Partnership) agreement, which has some serious flaws, will not be acted upon this year,” McConnell told a Kentucky State Farm Bureau breakfast in Louisville.

  10. I have been a Mercedes mechanic today. Both engine mounts, steering damper and transmission mount all replaced since noon today!
Neurotic ratdog only has a problem with me when I stand up. If I sit down in the floor, I’m his buddy. Stand up, and I’m a monster again.

    • The really, really, disgusting part is that the rightwhiners are claiming that Hillary’s openness is worse than Trumpy’s deceit. If there was any single aspect of his tax returns that makes him look good, or even less bad, he would have it tattooed on his face.

  11. If anyone has any Scotch on hand, please feel free to drink a shot in commemoration of our nephew Adam’s birthday – he would have been 31 today.

On a related but happier note, Adam’s sister Emily is getting married next weekend, to her boyfriend of dog-knows-how-many years, Michael. The weather should be lovely, which is good because apparently we’ll have a bit of walking to do – they’re having it at a local hiking preserve. So, woo-hoo, I don’t have to wear high heels!
