The Weekend Holiday Hole, Sat-Sun, Dec 24-25: Happy Holidays

The next few days bring several holidays not only to the US, but to the world. At sundown, Saturday, Dec 24, Jews begin celebrating the liberation of Jerusalem from the occupation of Antiochus IV, king of the Seleucid Empire in 165 BCE, which you know better as Hanukkah. And on Sunday, Dec 25, Christians throughout the world celebrate the birth of Jesus, which you know better as Christmas. Of course, in both cases there are many non-religious observations of the holidays by hundreds of millions of people throughout the world. And there are several billion people, about two-thirds of the world’s population, who observe neither holiday. So people like Bill O’Reilly need to understand that it is no more appropriate to wish strangers a Happy Hanukkah if you don’t know they’re Jewish than it is to wish strangers a Merry Christmas if you don’t know they’re Christian. Either way, there’s a two out of three chance you’re wrong. And since the entire point of saying anything is to tell them you hope they enjoy the upcoming holidays (including the ones that follow over the course of the next week), and not to offend them, it’s completely appropriate to say to them, “Happy Holidays,” and thank them for whatever they wish back at you, even if it doesn’t apply to you. They’re trying to be nice to you even if they loathe you as much as I. So, in the spirit of the holidays and because I just know it pisses you off so much, I want to say to you, Bill O’Reilly, “Happy Holidays.”

And happy and safe holidays to Everyone. May you find joy and happiness in the comfort of friends and/or family, or peace in the solitude of contemplation. And may the world go just one day without people trying to kill each other. Is that really too much to ask?

Happy Holidays. This is our daily open thread. Feel free to discuss any topic you wish. Peace.

  1. I’ve always enjoyed the holiday season concept, especially back in days of yore when everyone else seemed to enjoy and share the undercurrent of an almost universal happiness. It’s only been ‘recently’ — within the last 20-30 years, maybe? — that so much bitterness has bubbled to the surface. Why is that? What has caused so many to conclude that those who do not happen to share one particular undercurrent belief — the birth of Jesus — are therefore evil and waging “war” on the one “true” holiday worth celebrating, aka “Christmas”? The attitude — ‘All who don’t share MY (precise) beliefs are clearly evil and hate-filled’ — is baffling and in NO WAY reflects the “white Christian” world in which I grew up.

In the movie “Gandhi,” Ben Kingsley (Gandhi) got it right when he said, “I am a Muslim, and a Hindu, and a Christian and a Jew, and so are all of you!” That’s the way it should always be — universal tolerance; ‘freedom (of and from) religion’ for EVERY person. Attainable? Maybe, if we can find a way to rid ourselves of the Fox News scourge, wingnuts, evangelicals, Trumpussians, etc.

    Yeah, I know. Dream on.

But meanwhile, Happy Holidays to everyone!

    • Happy Holidays! I am struggling with my own faith lately. I never had a problem loving folks with different faiths and traditions from mine, but am struggling to love the Trumpites. I don’t want to hate nearly half the country, I don’t really want to hate anybody, but I find my imperfect self filled with loathing for the poor deluded angry creatures. This christian is totally failing what she believes in.

      • I understand completely. I hate it when I find myself hating the haters. It’s “Incongruous” — not harmonious in character; inappropriate; unbecoming. Plus, when one ‘hates the haters,’ doesn’t that make him/her a hater, who then also must hate him/herself? It ain’t fair. Although now, with the Trumpussians, maybe . . . ?

  2. Nancy Cordes on Face the Nation said that a new organization that doesn’t currently exist will be formed by Democrats to reach working class voters in future elections.
